Les principaux moments de ces journées, leurs conclusions et les documents afférents sont ici pour la première fois accessibles au public français, ce qui présente un intérêt historique, éthique et scientifique considérable. -- Freud eut à témoigner en tant qu'expert devant cette Commission et c'est l'unique occasion de l'entendre intervenir dans un débat public particulièrement délicat puisque était mis en accusation, parmi les plus grands noms de la psychiatrie autrichienne, le premier d'entre eux, Wagner-Jauregg, de surcroît son ami, qui reçut plus tard un prix Nobel pour la malariathérapie. -- Il est instructif de voir où peut mener le fait de rester ferme sur le principe que le médecin doit se tenir du côté du malade face aux exigences de l'Etat et que le simulateur n'a pas à être jugé moralement mais traité sur la spécificité de sa maladie. Pour avoir maintenu cette position et malgré la modération de ses propos, Freud, l'expert, s'est retrouvé en position de bouc émissaire, accusé par ceux-là mêmes qui étaient publiquement suspectés de forfaiture ! On mesure à quel point l'espoir que formèrent les analystes, lors du Ve Congrès international de psychanalyse à Budapest en 1918, de voir les psychiatres se rallier à leurs thèses ( la création de services de psychanalyse dans les armées avait même été envisagée ) reposait sur des malentendus. -- Ayant rencontré Kauders dans les années 70 à New York, où il avait émigré, Kurt Eissler, lui-même éloigné de son pays d'origine, reconstitue l'itinéraire et le destin d'un homme qui s'est trouvé à la croisée de l'histoire d'une société et de celle de la psychanalyse. A ce titre, son livre nous montre aussi le retour d'une culture ancrée dans l'histoire médicale de l'Autriche chez un analyste qui a dû s'adapter au Nouveau Monde, et amorce une réflexion sur l'importance, pour des analystes, du souvenir de leurs racines culturelles. -- Kurt R. Eissler, psychanalyste formé à Vienne avant d'émigrer aux Etats-Unis, a créé les " Freud Archives " dont il est longtemps resté le vigilant directeur.
