Original b/w photograph showing Fahreddin Pasha in Medina city with Ottoman soldiers and Arabian notables by congratulating each other's bairam. His injured left leg is cast into plaster. 9x14 cm. Fakhri Pasha or Fahreddin Pasha known as �mer Fahrettin T�rkkan after the Surname Law of 1934 was a Turkish career officer who was the commander of the Ottoman Army and governor of Medina from 1916 to 1919. He was nicknamed "The Lion of the Desert" and "The Tiger of the Desert" by the British and Arabs for his patriotism in Medina and is known for defending Medina in the Siege of Medina during World War I. In 1914 before the Ottoman Army was mobilized Staff Colonel Fahreddin Bey was appointed the commander of the XII Corps stationed in Mosul. He was promoted to the rank of Mirliva on 12 November 1914 and appointed to the Deputy Commander of the Fourth Army stationed in Aleppo. During World War I after Hussein bin Ali Sharif of Mecca started preparing for a revolt against the Ottoman Empire Fahreddin upon the orders of Djemal Pasha on 23 May 1916 moved toward Medina in Hejaz to defend it; he was appointed the commander of the Hejaz Expeditionary Force on 17 July 1916. Medina was besieged by the Arab forces who revolted against the Ottoman Sultan and sided with the British against Fahreddin Pasha but he stood his ground and defended the city. He also protected the single-track narrow-gauge Hejaz Railway from sabotage by the Hejazi army Turkish garrisons of the isolated small train stations withstood the continuous night attacks and secured the tracks against the increasing number of attacks around 130 major attacks in 1917 and hundreds in 1918 including more than 300 bombs on April 30 1918. With the withdrawal of the Ottoman Empire from the war with the Armistice of Mudros between the Ottoman Empire and the Allies of World War I on 30 October 1918 it was expected that Fahreddin would also surrender. But he refused to do so and rejected the armistice. During the siege of Medina Fahreddin sent the sacred artifacts and manuscripts of Medina to Istanbul in order to protect them from seizure. Most of the manuscripts were returned to Medina by the Ottoman Empire and are now in libraries in the city while the rest remain in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. <br/> <br/> N. p., [ca. 1916] unknown‎

‎"Un amiral, Hamelin, étudié par Jean-Paul Faivre, après un dépouillement consciencieux des archives. Hamelin était le fils d'un apothicaire de Honfleur. Sans la Révolution, il eût sans doute fait carrière dans la marine marchande où il avait débuté comme matelot en 1786. Mais, embarqué en 1792 sur “L'Entreprenant”, il franchit tous les grades, jusqu'à celui de contre-amiral qui lui fut conféré par Louis XVIII en 1823. De 1803 à 1808, Hamelin fut chargé « de la conduite des convois et des divisions de la flottille » dans la Manche : il put faire circuler entre Le Havre et le Boulonnais près de 800 bâtiments, ce qui prouve que le blocus n'était pas très hermétique. Avant 1803, Hamelin, sous les ordres de Baudin, avait participé à une campagne d'exploration dans les mers australes, après 1809 il fut envoyé dans l'océan Indien et participa à la défense de l'île de France. Il se rallia à Louis XVIII en 1814 et refusa de reconnaître Napoléon pendant les Cent-Jours. Néanmoins il fut brutalement mis à la retraite en 1823, sans doute parce qu'il n'avait pas assez strictement bloqué Cadix, dernier refuge des libéraux espagnols." (J. Godechot, Revue Historique) — "Dix ans après sa grande et précieuse thèse, “L'expansion française dans le Pacifique, 1800-1842”, Jean Paul Faivre nous livre aujourd'hui sa thèse secondaire sur le contre-amiral Hamelin. En bon historien, il n'a pas recherché le héros exceptionnel mais l'homme moyen, significatif d'une époque. Hamelin n'a rien de brillant ; ce n'est ni un homme de lettres, ni un homme de cour ; il ne s'est signalé ni par une victoire ni par une défaite à l'échelon national. C'est un pur marin, même de la marine française révolutionnaire et impériale. Il embarque à dix-sept ans, le 12 avril 1786 ; il ne débarquera pour la dernière fois qu'à cinquante quatre ans, en 1823. Pendant ces 37 ans, il n'a guère quitté le pont des navires, dans les situations les plus diverses et sous toutes les latitudes. Matelot sur les négriers, il pratique plusieurs fois le fameux « voyage triangulaire », de France sur les côtes africaines Angola puis en Amérique et retour. Entre temps, il complète son instruction théorique, qui sera excellente. La Révolution qui manque d'officiers de marine le propulse dans les hauts grades : simple timonnier à 23 ans, il est capitaine de frégate à 28, capitaine de vaisseau à 34. « Bonnet rouge », il est assez mal vu sous l'empire par le ministre courtisan Decrès dont la pusillanimité, suggère M. Faivre, fut une des raisons des échecs maritimes napoléoniens. Après des opérations en Méditerranée, Hamelin participe comme commandant de la corvette « le Naturaliste » à l'expédition de Boudin aux Terres Australes. Puis il sert dans la Manche et retourne, en 1808, dans l'Océan Indien, où il fait une course active aux navires anglais. Il ne les empêchera pas de s'emparer des Mascareignes, mais auparavant il a participé à la victoire du Grand Port et a pris deux vaisseaux ennemis avant d'être fait prisonnier lui-même par des forces supérieures. Nommé contre-amiral et baron d'Empire, il commande les escadres de l'Escoub puis de Brest. Sous la Restauration, il sera chargé du long blocus de Cadix et, malade, demandera à rentrer avant la prise du Trocadéro. On lui en voudra ; et aussi il a le défaut de n'être pas noble. Il ne sera jamais vice-amiral et devra se contenter, sous Louis-Philippe, du commandement pacifique du Dépôt des Cartes. Il meurt en 1839, ne laissant pas de quoi l'enterrer. « L'infâme Hamelin, » disaient les Anglais qu'il avait fort malmenés. « Tracassin » l'appelaient ses hommes affectueusement, car, tout en veillant de près à leur bien être, il ne les laissait jamais oisifs. Sans cesse avide de naviguer et de combattre, c'est un « entraîneur » d'hommes, un chef. A travers lui, dans cette biographie d'une haute qualité, dense, bourrée de faits, l'auteur a su évoquer, à sa manière exacte et minutieuse l'histoire des Océans, des découvertes et de la marine de son temps, avec ses déficiences et ses grandeurs."
