Green cloth hardcover with black imprinted floral design and gilt title stamped on front cover. Gilt title on spine. Floral end papers. Cloth on the spine has a light vertical crease. The front hinge was repaired. Light edge wear to cloth extremities. This copy includes an inscribed approx. 6.5" x 4" cabinet photograph card on the front paste down. The inscription on the photograph is the same phrase as the frontispiece but is handwritten. The author inscribed this book to Rev. J. O. Foster on the front blank end paper - "The Gray to "The Blue" "We be brethren!" To Rev. J. O. Foster with the fraternal regards and best wishes of his friend & Brother J. Wm. Jones Ocean Grove N. J. Aug. 4th to 7th 1887." Opposite this inscription is a single clipped newspaper column pasted down on the verso of the right front flyleaf. The news clipping is titled "Letters of Gen. R. E. Lee." Hindman met its troops in battle. Jones attached to the Army of Tennessee at the time of the battle consulted the reports available for the battle and here reconstructs the action from the confusing and contradictory writings of the leading participants; the fight lasted all day but the Confederates withdrew when night fell. Not in Nevins Nicholson or Dornbusch the latter noting the "Southern Bivouac" printing. OCLC locates one copy Arkansas-Fayetteville; we sold a third copy about ten years ago. A Jean-Jacques Isle de Beauchaine (1747-ap.1792), officier de marine. Sympathique lettre lui annonçant une « rescription [.] de 200 » livres qu'il pourra toucher à La Rochelle et souhaitant qu'il persévère dans les dispositions où il est. « C'est l'unique moyen de vous instruire et de vous rendre utile au service du Roy. Je vous en félicité, et vous fais, avec mes souhaits de bon voyage, mes sincères remerciements des choses obligeantes pour moi dont votre lettre est remplie ». Le chevalier Isle s'embarque en effet sur L'Isis, probablement peu de temps après cette lettre, et y naviguera plus d'un an comme le montre l'autre lettre de Pâris Duverney de décembre 1769. Il est intéressant de voir ici que le Parîs Duverney, déjà âgé, s'intéresse fortement aux jeunes marins issus de son école. Signature peu commune. [340]

Sympathique lettre au retour du chevalier Isle qui a navigué plus d'un an sur l'Isis, lui annonçant notamment une rescription. « J'apprends avec un véritable plaisir, Monsieur, par la lettre que vous m'avez fait l'honneur de m'écrire le 28 du mois dernier votre heureux retour en France de la longue campagne que vous venez de faire ; et ce qui ajoute encore à ma satisfaction, c'est l'avantage que vous avez eu de ne souffrir aucune incommodité de la mer, ce qui me donne encore l'espérance que vous serez en état de soutenir avec succès le genre de service que vous avez embrassé ». A Jean-Jacques Isle de Beauchaine (1747-ap.1792), officier de marine. Sympathique lettre répondant aux nouvelles de son ancien élève. On y apprend ainsi qu'il continue son « instruction » et passera prochainement un examen sur « le cours de M Bézout », le fameux mathématicien du XVIIIe siècle. « Et je désire de tout mon coeur par l'intérêt que je prends à ce qui vous regarde, que vous continuiez de travailler aussi utilement, puisque c'est le plus sur moyen de votre avancement ». Il semble que le chevalier Isle était toujours à La Rochelle. Cette lettre montre bien tout l'intérêt que Paris-Duverney pouvait porter à ses anciens élèves, et en particulier à Isle. Elle est écrite deux mois avant son décès et on sent déjà la signature moins assurée que sur d'autres lettres. [101-2]

Après avoir signé, Pâris-Duverney écrit ce paragraphe : « Je pense trop bien sur votre compte pour ne pas espérer que votre conduite ne se démentira pas, vous avez de bons exemples à imiter dans celle de M. Votre frère qui est plein de zèle et d'activité ». Il fait ici référence à Henri-Mathieu Isle de Beauchaine (1744-1803), son frère aîné qui fut capitaine de dragons. [101-2]
