First edition, 8vo (203 x 125 mm), [4], vii, [1 errata], 152p., with half-title, engraved frontispiece, some light spotting, cont. calf, re-backed, corners re-newed, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, ruled in gilt. George Montagu (1753?1815), English army officer and naturalist. In 1770 he joined the army as an Ensign in the 15th Regiment of Foot and In December 1775 George was promoted to the rank of Captain on the same day that the regiment was ordered to America. He resigned his commission as a Captain in 1777, but eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Wiltshire Militia. This, his first publication, is little known and is rare, he is better known for his pioneering two-volume Ornithological Dictionary; or Alphabetical Synopsis of British Birds of 1802, which for the first time accurately defined the status of Britain's birds. He is remembered today for species such as the Montagu's harrier, named for him. ESTC locating 3 UK copies (BL, Cambridge and St. Andrews), with just 1 copy located in North America (Smithsonian).

Maps: 19 coloured maps: coloured section quite clean with a faint touch of foxing to margins. Couple of maps number corner with small tear. 4 panoramic b/w photographs mostly clean with a little chips & rough edges however all completely intact. 8vo., First Edition, with fine portrait frontispiece and 65 plates and maps (a number full-page) on 39; handsomely bound in full dark green crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. One of the key military memoirs of the twentieth century, this is as much an autobiography as a soldier's account of war. Written entirely by 'Monty' himself (in pencil, as so many of his official communications were composed), this characteristically straightforward (and often politically outspoken) account covers boyhood, early service with the Warwickshires, WWII and beyond (notably, about a third of the work covers his post-war career as CIGS and after). For technical military detail we look to the author's other works; here we find the simple account of a 'soldier who kept the faith'. A great read from one of the unforgettable leaders of his times.
