Die Aktualität ist aber "per se" untreu und vergesslich, und daher ist eine Wiederholung keineswegs überflüssig. Der "Frieden" herrscht noch nicht in Galiläa, die Palästinenserfrage ist längst nicht gelöst, und der Krieg als solcher ist in keiner Weise abgeschafft worden. Diese Fotos sollen, begleitet von den Texten, Mitgefühle erwecken. Der Betrachter soll diese Mischung aus Schönheit und Greuel, aus Leben und Tod, im Alltag der Bewohner Beiruts und aller Menschen während eines Krieges spüren. Zum Beispiel zu erzählen, wie er am ersten Kriegstag einen leicht verwundeten Kämpfer im Auto mitgenommen hat, der darauf bestand, im verlassenen Nabatiyet abgesetzt zu werden, zehn Minuten von der riesigen israelischen Kriegsmaschinerie entfernt... Oder wie ein achtjähriger Junge, fünfzig Meter von einem Gebäude entfernt, das gerade von einer riesigen Bombe zerstört wurde, eine Wasserwanne hingestellt hatte, in der er Coladosen frisch hielt, um sie den Bergungsleuten und den Gaffern anzubieten. Ja, diese Nähe von Leben und Tod oder eher dieses Leben, das sein ganzes Profil eben aufgrund jener Nachbarschaft zum Tode bekommt, ruft gerade West-Beirut, der Libanon im Krieg des Sommers 1982, hervor. ? Beirut ist das wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Zentrum des Landes mit vielen Verlagen und Universitäten, unter anderen der Amerikanischen Universität Beirut (AUB) und der Université Saint-Joseph (USJ). Die Stadt wurde vor dem Libanesischen Bürgerkrieg (1975?1990) oft als ?Paris des Nahen Ostens? bezeichnet. ... Während der 16 Jahre Bürgerkrieg gab es zahlreiche Friedensbemühungen sowie kurze oder längere Feuerpausen. Die Hauptkampfhandlungen und somit die gravierendsten Zerstörungen gab es im Stadtzentrum und entlang der Demarkationslinie (?Green Line?), die West- und Ost-Beirut trennte. Die von einer Religionszugehörigkeit geprägten Viertel entmischten sich von den jeweils anderen Religionen. Der libanesische Schriftsteller Raschid al-Daif beschrieb die Stimmung der Beiruter Bevölkerung während des Krieges wie folgt: "? Der Krieg war dann aber kein Kampf von Arm gegen Reich, sondern von Arm und Reich gegen Reich und Arm. Palästinenser bekämpften sich untereinander, Syrer kämpften mit Palästinensern gegen Christen, dann mit Christen gegen Palästinenser. Schließlich die Christen untereinander und gegen die Drusen, alle miteinander und gegeneinander ? wer sollte das verstehen? Subscriber's name is blank. Faded in a few spots but always visible Very Good. The 'Cold Water Army' was a juvenile temperance organization founded in the belief that its message was best directed at children who were more likely to follow it when they became adults. The 'Pledge' begins: "Here Lord! I pledge perpetual hate/ To all that can intoxicate;/ I'll never use the filthy weed/ Then from its evils I'll be freed." Asa Fitz Secretary of this Philadelphia branch was a writer on temperance subjects and editor of the 'Cold Water Boy' a periodical published in Providence.
