‎"Avec cet ouvrage, Jean-Luc Quoy-Bodin a fait une oeuvre objective d'historien, et non de pamphlétaire, redressant au passage quelques contre-vérités. Cela permet d'éclairer d'un jour nouveau la vie de ceux qui, il y a deux siècles, furent francs-maçons. Il précise que la mode des « loges » venue d'Angleterre, d'Ecosse et d'Irlande se situe en France en 1744, au moment de la guerre contre l'Autriche. La franc-maçonnerie, jugée comme un mouvement humaniste, gagna bientôt toutes les armées européennes. Les grands maîtres se recrutant parmi les membres les plus en vue de la haute noblesse, la franc-maçonnerie fut alors taxée d'« aristocratie dans une aristocratie ». Jean-Luc Quoy-Bodin, qui a effectué un gros travail de recherche, a retrouvé les noms des initiés dans l’armée et peut ainsi suivre jusqu’a la Restauration la marche d’une société dont le coté secret semble assez relatif. Ce qui est trés intéressant, c’est qu’il montre la situation morale de l’armée à la fin du XVIIIe siécle et le malaise qui y régnait. Les grades élevés étant interdits aux roturiers, les « officiers de fortune » ne pouvaient, aprés de longs services dans le rang, qu’accéder au grade de capitaine en second. Les cahiers de doléances de 1789 se font l’écho de véhémentes protestations. De plus, l’ennui qui régnait dans les garnisons de province incita les officiers à se faire « initier » pour y trouver un pôle de distraction. « II s’agit d'étre diverti, plutot que converti », disait-on alors. Cette fantaisie dura tout un hiver, racontérent des témoins, puis d’autres amusements prévalurent... La Révolution fit évoluer l’esprit de ces maçons d’occasion..." Il devient un ouvrage de référence sur l'histoire militaire française tout au long du XVIIIe siècle. Brunet en disait « un ouvrage complet d'informations curieuses ». Le jésuite Gabriel Daniel (1649-1728), déjà connu pour son Histoire de France, imprima cet ouvrage pour la première fois en 1721 à Paris. Dans le grand nombre de planches qu'il contient on retrouve des soldats et chevaliers d'armes, des pièces d'artillerie, des représentations de forces armées en exercice, des médailles, des navires de guerre, etc...
