‎ROTH, ERNEST DAVID (1879-1964).‎

‎Friends of the Brooklyn Public Library. Original bookplate.‎

‎Brooklyn, 1941, Signed and dated in pencil.. Copperplate engraved bookplate. Image size 107 x 138 mm. Expertly matted. Mat size 415 x 520 mm. Fine ¶ Prizewinning bookplate designed and engraved by Roth for a competition announced by the Friends of the Brooklyn Public Library in 1939. The plate was produced in conjunction with the opening of the new building in 1941. It shows the view from the window of the new Library's Trustees Room, past the wings of the ornamental scultped owls that flank the window, over the Soldiers and Sailors monument in Grand Army Plaza, past the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower, past Borough Hall, and on to lower Manhattan. Roth was born in Stuttgart and emigrated with his family to New York when he was five years old. He got a job as a printer's devil, developed a talent, and went on to study at the National Academy of Design and at the New York School of Art. He became an American citizen in 1905, and immediately returned to Europe to travel and work, producing a fine series of architectural views. (In 2012, Roth's Venetian prints were the focus of a traveling exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art.).‎
