‎TOWNSHEND OF CHITRAL AND KUT - Based on the Diaries and Private Papers of Major-General Sir Charles Vere Townshend KCB, DSO.‎

‎William Heinemann, London, 1928, 1st edn., [xvi], 411pp, half tone frontis portrait, 7pp half tone photo ills., red cloth lettered in gilt at spine, armorial insignia in gilt upper board, in this biography of his cousin Charles Vere Ferrars Townshend the author surmises that he was probably helped financially in his education and military career by the head of the family, the Marquis Townshend. He obtained a cadetship in the Royal Navy but changed direction in 1881 when he was gazetted to the Royal Marines. With access to Townshend's diaries and papers and with the recollections of his contempories the author is able to present an account of the life of a soldier, from his early days in the Royal Marines, his transfer in 1886 to the Indian Staff Corps, how he won the CB when garrison commander at the siege of Fort Chitral on the Northwest Frontier in 1895, the DSO when commanding the 12th Sudanese Btn. at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, a number of appointments in South Africa and India reaching the rank of Major-General by 1911. At the outbreak of WW1 he was in command of the under-equipped 6th Indian Division which was sent into Mesopotamia and ordered to take Baghdad. After initial progress he failed to reach his objective and retired to Kut where, after a five month siege (for which he was awarded the KCB) he surrendered his command to the Turks and became a POW. Released after the armistice he found that some were working against any further military appointment for him he went into Parliament to work for the cause of ex-servicemen. He died in Paris in 1924 and was buried in the churchyard near his home at Raynham in Norfolk, overall soiling to cloth which is rubbed at extrems., frays at tips and ends of joints, edges well tanned, endpapers and prelims tanned and a little foxed, some evidence of old insect damage to front free endpaper, some soiling in places in text, no dustwrapper, good reading copy,‎

With millions of men away to fight in the Second World War Britain was struggling for labour. In order to replace the agricultural workers now fighting the Nazis the Women's Land Army originally founded in the First World War was relaunched in June 1939 by the Ministry of Labour. The majority of the Land Girls already lived in the countryside but more than a third came from London and the industrial cities of the north of England. By the end of the war over 100000 women of the WLA or 'Land Girls' as they were more affectionately known had helped feed the nation in its darkest hour. First published in 1941 LAND GIRL was a practical guide for the city slickers who were recruited into the Women's Land Army and sent to work on farms in the English countryside to replace the men who had joined up. An amazing period piece hundreds of thousands of copies were printed and sold and it became one of the year's best selling books"--- any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo.
