‎Par un journaliste communiste australien (1911-1983) installé au Nord-Vietnam depuis octobre 1954, le tout premier reportage fait par un non-Vietnamien dans les zones contrôlées par le Front National de Libération du Sud-Vietnam (FNLSV). En annexe, des interviews par l'auteur de Nguyen Huu Tho (Président du FNLSV), de Hô Chi Minh (13 avril 1964) et du général Vo Nguyen Giap (même date), ainsi qu'une lettre de Hô Chi Minh au mensuel mexicain "Minority of One" (24 avril 1964). — Wilfred Burchett (1911-1983) était un journaliste communiste australien. Issu d'une famille pauvre, il dut quitter l'école assez tôt pour gagner sa vie et s'affilia au Parti Communiste. En 1936, il émigra à Londres, où il travailla dans une agence de voyage spécialisée dans l' émigration des juifs allemands vers la Palestine et les Etats-Unis. En 1938, il épousa une réfugiée juive allemande dont il divorça en 1948. Il commença sa carrière de journaliste en 1940. Après un reportage sur la révolte de la Nouvelle-Calédonie contre les autorités de Vichy, il fut engagé par le "Daily Express", pour lequel il couvrit la guerre en Chine et en Birmanie puis la Campagne de MacArthur. Il fut le tout premier journaliste occidental à pénétrer à Hiroshima après sa destruction par la bombe atomique. Son reportage, ne cachant rien du désastre humanitaire que celle-ci provoqua, lui valut l'hostilité de l'armée et de la presse américaines et il lui fut interdit de remettre les pieds au Japon. Devenu Britannique, il travailla ensuite trois ans en Grèce et à Berlin pour son journal, puis pour le "Times" de Londres en Europe orientale, où il couvrit les procès du Cardinal Mindszenty et de László Rajk en Hongrie et les purges staliniennes en Bulgarie, reprenant à son compte les accusations contre les accusés. En 1951, il passa six mois en Chine pour "L'Humanité" puis couvrit en Corée du Nord les négociations à Panmunjom. Il y visita les camps de prisonniers de guerre, y interviewant notamment le général américain William F. Dean, qui, dans son autobiographie, lui exprima sa reconnaissance pour son aide et les informations qu'il lui apportait. En 1956, il arriva à Moscou comme correspondant du "National Guardian", un journal radical de gauche américain. Il y resta six ans, nombre de ses articles étant repris dans le "Daily Express" et le "Financial Times". En 1963, dans une lettre à son père, il lui confia qu'il estimait que les Chinois avaient "100 % raison" dans leur controverse avec l'Union Soviétique. Durant les années suivantes, il publia de nombreux ouvrages et articles sur la Guerre du Vietnam vue depuis le Nord-Vietnam et sur la Révolution Culturelle chinoise. En 1975-1976, il soutint le régime Khmer Rouge au Cambodge mais, après avoir visité des camps de réfugiés cambodgiens en 1978, il réalisa son erreur et condamna le régime de Pol Pot. Ayant perdu son passeport britannique en 1955, l'Australie et le Royaume-Uni refusèrent de lui en fournir un nouveau ; il voyagea longtemps avec un laissez-passer vietnamien puis avec un passeport cubain et ne put de ce fait assister à l'enterrement de son père. Ce n'est qu'en 1972 que l'Australie lui octroya un nouveau passeport. En 1982, il s'installa en Bulgarie, patrie de sa seconde épouse, où il mourut.‎

The 2nd Engineer Battalion is an engineering battalion in the United States Army which can trace its lineage back to 1861. 2d Battalion of Engineers expanded reorganized and redesignated 1 July-1 August 1916 as the 2d Regiment of Engineers. 2d Regiment of Engineers expanded 21 May-20 June 1917 to form the 2d 4th and 5th Regiments of Engineers 4th and 5th Regiments of Engineers-hereafter separate lineages. 2d Regiment of Engineers redesignated 29 August 1917 as the 2d Engineers. Assigned in September 1917 to the 2d Division later redesignated as the 2nd Infantry Division United States. The Regiment participated in Mexican Expedition: Mexico 1916-1917 and World War I: Aisne; Aisne-Marne; St. Mihiel; Meuse-Argonne; Lorraine 1918; Ile de France 1918. General Lejeune wrote in the Introduction that "In the last battle of the war it the Regiment threw two foot-bridges across the Meuse in the face of withering machine guns and heavy artillery fire thereby enabling the advanced battalions of the Division to cross the river and seize the highest on the east bank. Battery Rathbone 1905-1948 was part of the harbor defenses of San Francisco. Battery Rathbone was a reinforced concrete Endicott Period 6 inch coastal gun battery on Fort Barry Marin County California. The battery was named in G.O. 194 27 Dec 1904 after Lt. Samuel B. Rathbone U.S. Artillery who died of wounds received in action at Queenstown Heights Canada in 1812. Battery construction started in 1904 and transferred to the Coast Artillery for use 8 Jun 1905. The east half of the Battery was renamed in G.O. 13 22 Mar 1922 for Brig. Gen. James F. McIndoe who died 6 Feb 1919. Battery deactivated in 1948. The following appeared on 28 October 1920 in The Columbus Ledger: A Columbus Boy's Distinguished Military Service. Hundreds of Columbus people recall him pleasantly-- plain Will Mitchell then now Colonel William A. Mitchell of the United States army. It was only natural that the young man's thoughts should turn toward a military career as his older brother Colonel Americus Mitchell was then an officer in the United States army. A local sponsor became greatly interested in him and was of substantial assistance in obtaining his appointment to the West Point Military Academy from the Fourth Georgia district. His army record subsequently was one of steady advancement. During the world War Colonel Mitchell organized the 20th Engineers a forestry regiment containing about 27000 men and shipped it to Europe going over himself with the last detachment of the regiment. This was perhaps the largest regiment ever organized. Shortly after he reached France Colonel Mitchell was placed in command of the 2nd Engineers this regiment constituting the Engineer regiment of the 2nd Division. He served with this regiment from Chateau Thierry to the armistice and later on became corps engineer of the 8th corps. Those familiar with world-war history of course know of the famous Second Division and his regiment constituted one of the most efficient parts of this great division. For his services he was awarded several medals by the French one of them the second highest honor given by the French government and the distinguished service medal by the United States. Dezember 1943 im Nordmeer, ca. 160 km nördlich vom Nordkap von zwei britischen Kampfgruppen, bestehend aus einem Schlachtschiff, drei Leichten und einem Schweren Kreuzer und mindestens acht Zerstörern, unter der Führung des Schlachtschiffs Duke of York versenkt. 3.
