From Foreword: Several years before the hundredth anniversary of the American Civil War the American Ordnance Association planned a series of monographs on the weapons of that conflict. The project has a twofold purpose. First to commemorate the event in some unique but appropriate way; secondly to make available to students of the Civil War authentic data on the characteriestics of the weapons with which the battles of that war were fought. The present work is devoted to cavalry weapons -- and with good purpose. As all students of strategy and tactics know the Civil War was an historic example of mobility reconnaissance and fast maneuver. Many of its battles rank in history as classical examples which have been used as guides by military leaders of all nations. In no area is this more cogent than that of cavalry tactics. Those tactics were dependent not only upon the skill of the cavalry commander the bravery of the individual cavalryman and the condition of his mount but also upon the capabilities of the wapons with which the units were equipped. Thus a knowledge of the military characterisitcs of the cavalry weapons of the time is essential to a proper appraisal of the decisions of cavalry commanders and the outcome of those decisions. In this respect the military characteristics of all wapons of all battles of all wars are basic elements in appraising the final outcome. The final two pages contain an assemblage of portraits of past commanders of Post No. 5 which was organized August 21 1873 largely through the efforts of Col. Hiram Hilliard. The Burial of General Rosecrans Arlington National Cemetary May 17 1902 is the very scarce first edition nearly the complete stock of this original edition was destroyed by a fire at Robert Clarke the publisher just as distribution started. It was subsequently reprinted with a note explaining the reasons for the reissue. The 37th volume includes the scarce accompanying pamphlet: "The Battles of Chattanooga" address of Major W. J. Colburn at the dedication of the New York Monument in Point Park Lookout Mountain Tennessee on Nov. 15 1910. Lacking only the 2nd 19th 23rd 26th and 29th reunions. Colombo Ceylon now Sri Lanka 1903. Half Morocco. Very Good. 8vo. 18.5 by 14.5 cm. iv 44 pp. the leaves made of heavy card stock. The author a colonial officer for the British army would later publish "The Annals of the King's Royal Rifle Corps" which contained his color illustrations of uniforms arms and equipment and other works. From this work it is clear he had artistic aptitude and as an officer in Ceylon undoubtedly a lot of free time to indulge in the creation of this work. It would seem that this work was written with an eye on possible publication but that did not come to be. Few will not be charmed by the many vignettes of badges and coats-of-arms mostly rendered in bright watercolors with some done as ink drawings. Also illustrated are flags and banners. Some of the tissue guards are heavily foxed while the cards proper sometimes have offsetting from this soiling. A large chipped loss to the leather spine with a partial loss of one letter of title. Still a very handsome album. <br /><br /> books

No Edition Stated. <br /><br />Handbill measuring 7 3/8 x 4 7/8 187 x 124 mm single page printed on both sides on cheap paper. <br /><br />Red Army handbill calling on German soldiers to lay down their arms and surrender. The handbill also serves as a safe-conduct pass for German soldiers who surrender to the Red Army translating from the German: "German soldiers! All those captured by the Red Army are guaranteed life good treatment and return home after the War." <br /><br />Text on both sides in German with a small section also in Russian the part guaranteeing free conduct. The handbill mentions a directive of Stalin dated 23 February 1942. By then the tide had started to turn against the Germans so this handbill and others like it would have served to further undermine German morale. <b>SCARCE</b>. <br /><br />CONDITION: Closed tear to one edge paper heavily toned. COMPTE DE M PASQUIE ; small split to the head of the spine corners slightly bumped lacking ties overall in very attractive condition. <br/><br/>This attractive manuscript details in fine calligraphy the staffing and accounts of the Army of Bohemia composed of French Bavarian and Saxon troops from 1741 to 1743. This time encompassed the occupation of Prague by Charles Elector of Bavaria who had raised a claim to the Bohemian throne at the outset of the Wars of the Austrian Succession. This war was a conflict that embroiled most of Europe and spilled over into America with the Anglo-Spanish War of Jenkins Ear. It is of great interest both for the high quality of the penmanship and for the historical interest of the contents which exhaustively details the staffing and provisioning of the Army of Bohemia. The account appears to have been prepared as a memorandum for François Pasquier principal clerk to the Army of Bohemia assimilating information on the regiments wartime expenses. hardcover books

The M16A1 Rifle: Operation and Preventive Maintenance
Washington DC: U. S. Government Printing Office 1969. FIrst edition thus. Very good. First edition thus supersedes DA Pam 750-30 28 June 1968; 7 1/4 x 5; pp. 2-30; pictorial wraps; profusely illustrated with drawings by artist William "Will" Eisner; minor wear to spine; small signature of previous owner to upper margin of front wrap; very good or better condition. During the Vietnam War in the mid-1960s the Army began issuing what was known as the XM16A1 assault rifle to its infantry units. Soon severe problems began emerging mostly due to improper instructions and cleaning kits the biggest one being "failure to extract." That necessitated numerous improvements and in 1967 the rifle was standardized as M16A1. Meanwhile cartoonist and author William Eisner 1917 - 2005 worked with The Pentagon for years producing teaching tools in a cartoon format easily understandable and relevant isuch as the current booklet in which a female narrator instructed the soldiers on the proper care for their rifles. Humorous and appealing chapter titles included: "How to Strip Your Baby" "All the Way with Neglige" and "Putting Maggie Together." A copy of the book was issued to practically every GI serving in Vietnam. U. S. Government Printing Office paperback books
