‎GROMATICA MILITARE: LO PS. IGINO. Prefazione, Testo, Traduzione E Commento‎

‎Bump to upper rear corner. Small chip to base of spine. ; This book aims at presenting military gromatic information from the only extent ancient author writing on those questions, ps. Hyginus (IIIth A. C. ) who wrote a work about metatio (land distribution to the troops of the Roman army). Several scholars studied this book until very recently, but generally misunderstood vital points. The present edition an Italian translation mainly studies linguistic questions in order to reassess the debated points: the groma’s dispositioning according to the symmetry; the right and left side of a camp’s map; the distribution of troops within the camp; the disposition of cohortes legionariae in front and of some troops in the central part of the camp; finally the fortifications in the form of a quarter of a cylinder (claviculae) , built out of the wall starting from the jamb of the four doors, and a small excavation next each of them (titulum). The present book studies the original text and meaning of the de metatione castrorum by proposing a new restitution and a critical apparatus, a translation, an exhaustive preface with explanations about linguistic and textual problems, a commentary, a chapter about the historical evolution of the text from the first edition to the present one and by a Tabula discrepantium. ; Collection Latomus Volume 339; 269 pages; Isbn: 9782870312857. ‎THE SHADOW OF SPARTA‎

‎Inscribed in pen to Mark Golden by Stephen Hodkinson on ffep. Light shelfwear. ; 408 pages; The past 20 years have witnessed a revival of interest in the study of Sparta. The early 20th-century images of Spartans as hearty good fellows or scarlet-cloaked automata, have been superceded by more complex scholarly interpretations of this obscure civilization. The mystery surrounding Sparta has been instrumental in shaping scholarship on the subject. Historians have taken as much interest in the myths and disinformation attached to Sparta as they have in the truth about their city-state. The studies in this volume provide insights into the traditional question of what actually happened at Sparta. Yet the implications of this work go far beyond Laconia to focus on some of the most studied of Greek writers, showing how Athenians defined the achievement, or the failure, of their own city. ; Signed by One Author‎

‎AGESILAOS AND THE CRISIS OF SPARTA‎

‎Very light shelfwear to book. Scholars' name to ffep (Mark Golden). ; As one of the two Spartan kings, Agesilaos II presided over Sparta's greatest imperial expansion and its collapse as a major power. At his accession in 400 BC, Sparta had recently defeated Athens in the Peloponnesian War and was the undisputed leader of the Aegean Greek world; at the time of his death some forty years later, Sparta had been reduced to the status of a mere Peloponnesian squabbler, its role indistinguishable from that of any of a number of other Greek states. "Agesilaos and the Crisis of Sparta" is an account of this critical period of Greek history, focusing on a single career. Progressing both chronologically and thematically, the author reveals the principal aspects of Spartan politics and society and appraises the possible causes of Sparta's preciptous decline and fall. ; 520 pages‎

‎Lower corners bumped. Until now, it was generally assumed that ancient Greek cavalry was subordinated to the infantry because it was less effective in battle. This book challenges this assumption, analyzing the position of Greek cavalry, and especially the Athenian arm, not only in the battlefield but in society as a whole.‎

‎Bumping to corners. Small bump to top corner of textblock with creasing to a few pages. DJ has creasing along edges with a couple of tiny chips. ; The Roman world in the Imperial period was ruled by a succession of autocrats for whom the army remained the single most important source of political power. But how could one man win the loyalty and affection of an army which numbered up to to half a million? Although financial benefits and legal privileges had the most direct impact on the soldiers, every emperor sought some kind of additional bond through a personal association and identification with them. ; 468 pages; Special edition for Sandpiper Books. ‎CICERO AND THE CATILINARIAN CONSPIRACY‎

‎Very faint shelfwear else fine. ; Routledge Studies in Ancient History, Vol. 1; 118 pages; This story of Cicero and the Catilinarian Conspiracy is set within and offers a case study of the political, military, economic and social crises besetting the late Roman Republic in the era of the "Roman Revolution." The book chronicles the efforts of the defeated radical politician Lucius Sergius Catilina to bring together a group of disaffected Roman nobles and discontented Italian farmers in a conspiracy to overthrow the republican government at Rome and to take control of the Italian peninsula (while the proconsul Pompey the Great and the majority of Roman military units were campaigning in the Near East) , and the success of the conservative optimate consul Marcus Tullius Cicero in uncovering the conspiracy, driving Catiline out of Rome, and defeating his revolutionary followers in the capital and in Etruria. The narrative reveals the political corruption, economic problems, and military instability which were leading to the demise of the republican system and the rise of an imperial government in the first century B. C. The author’s comprehensive knowledge of the ancient sources and the modern scholarship relevant to the last century of the republic has allowed him to offer a detailed and definitive account of this important episode in Roman history. In the same seamless combination of vivid narrative and historical analysis through which he enlightened the Roman imperial age of Constantine, Dr. Odahl here illuminates the Roman republican era of Cicero. This book is a significant publication in Ciceronian studies and will become the standard account of the Catilinarian Conspiracy.‎

‎THERMOPYLAE The Battle That Changed the World‎

‎Upper corners bumped. Minor shelfwear to DJ now in mylar. ; In 480 BC, a huge Persian army, led by the inimitable King Xerxes, entered the mountain pass of Thermopylae as it marched on Greece, intending to conquer the land with little difficulty. But the Greeks? Led by King Leonidas and a small army of Spartans? Took the battle to the Persians at Thermopylae, and halted their advance? Almost. It is one of history’s most acclaimed battles, one of civilization’s greatest last stands. And in Thermopylae, renowned classical historian Paul Cartledge looks anew this history-altering moment and, most impressively, shows how its repercussions have bearing on us even today. The invasion of Europe by Xerxes and his army redefined culture, kingdom, and class. The valiant efforts of a few thousand Greek warriors, facing a huge onrushing Persian army at the narrow pass at Thermopylae, changed the way generations to come would think about combat, courage, and death. ; 313 pages‎

‎THE ROMAN CAVALRY From the First to the Third Century A. D.‎

‎Book is fine. Very light shelfwear to DJ; The cavalry was a vital part of the army of Rome and it played a significant role in the expansion and success of the Roman Empire. The authors describe the origins of the mounted units of the Roman army and trace their development from temporary allied troops to the regular alae and cohorts. The book covers the subject from the perspective of both the men and the horses. How were the horses selected and disposed of; how were they trained, stabled and fed? How were the men recruited, organized and equipped; and what were the conditions of service for a Roman cavalryman? The cavalry had to be employed in peacetime and this is discussed as well as its role in war. This book provides a comprehensive account of the Roman cavalry and the current state of knowledge concerning it. The wide selection of illustrations includes original drawings by Karen R. Dixon. ; 256 pages‎

‎Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 224 pages; Acknowledging that Homer is a poet, not a staff instructor, Albracht works carefully through the Homeric text to produce a persuasive picture of the workings of battle in the Iliad, in two parts: in Part I the council of war, marshalling of the troops, the use of chariots, the advance into battle, the standing fight, the massed attack and defence, retreat, flight and pursuit; in Part II protection in the field, attack and defence of a fortified camp, and the siege and defence of a fortified city. Throughout, he offers the reader fascinating explanations of the details of the battle narrative.‎

‎THE WESTERN WAY OF WAR Infantry Battle in Classical Greece‎

‎271 pages; Second Edition. The Greeks of the classical age invented not only the central idea of Western politics--that the power of state should be guided by a majority of its citizens--but also the central act of Western warfare, the decisive infantry battle. Instead of ambush, skirmish, maneuver, or combat between individual heroes, the Greeks of the fifth century b. C. Devised a ferocious, brief, and destructive head-on clash between armed men of all ages. In this bold, original study, Victor Davis Hanson shows how this brutal enterprise was dedicated to the same outcome as consensual government--an unequivocal, instant resolution to dispute. The Western Way of War draws from an extraordinary range of sources--Greek poetry, drama, and vase painting, as well as historical records--to describe what actually took place on the battlefield. It is the first study to explore the actual mechanics of classical Greek battle from the vantage point of the infantryman--the brutal spear-thrusting, the difficulty of fighting in heavy bronze armor which made it hard to see, hear and move, and the fear. Hanson also discusses the physical condition and age of the men, weaponry, wounds, and morale. This compelling account of what happened on the killing fields of the ancient Greeks ultimately shows that their style of armament and battle was contrived to minimize time and life lost by making the battle experience as decisive and appalling as possible. Linking this new style of fighting to the rise of constitutional government, Hanson raises new issues and questions old assumptions about the history of war.‎

‎BRITISH WRITING OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Else book is fine. Faint rubbing and shelfwear to DJ. ; British Writing of the Second World War is the first study to provide a detailed critical and historical survey of British literary culture in wartime. Concerned as much with war as with writing, it explores the significance of cultural representations of violence to the administration of the war effort. A theoretical account of the symbolic practices which connect military violence to policy provides a framework for analysing imaginative and documentary literature in its relations both to propaganda and to Peoples War ideals of social reconstruction. The book evaluates wartime fictions and memoirs in the context of official and unofficial discourses about military aviation, the Blitz, campaigns in North Africa, war aims, the conscript Army and the Home Front, Prisoners of War, and the Holocaust. It uncovers the processes by which the meanings the war had for participants were produced, and provides an extensive bibliographical resource for future scholarship. ; Oxford English Monographs; 256 pages‎

‎THE ART OF WAR Sun Tzu‎

‎Light creasing and rubbing to wraps. Foxing to textblock. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; Compiled more than two thousand years ago by a mysterious warrior-philosopher, The Art of War is still perhaps the most prestigious and influential book of strategy in the world today, as eagerly studied in Asia by modern politicians and executives as it as been by military leaders since ancient times. As a study of the anatomy of organizations in conflict, The Art of War applies to competition and conflict in general, on every level from the interpersonal to the international. Its aim is invincibility, victory without battle, and unassailable strength through understanding of the physics, politics, and psychology of conflict. This translation presents the classic from the point of view of its background in the great spiritual tradition of Taoism, the origin of psychology, science, and technology in East Asia and the source of the insights into human nature that underlie this most revered of handbooks for success. Translated from a standard collection of commentaries on Sun Tzu's text by eleven interpreters, the work has been edited by Thomas Cleary to bring out the meaning of the principles of strategy. In addition, the translator provides an extensive introduction discussing the content and background of the book. ; 184 pages‎
