United States Army 1863. One sheet of paper backed with an attached second sheet two horizontal folds one vertical fold fragile yet Very Good sheets separating at folds. light age toning. Discharge papers for Thomas Fulford a private in Company B 64th Regiment Infantry Indiana Volunteers dated Sept. 30 1863 at St. Louis Mo by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In left margin handwritten in red ink "Phthisis-hereditary-developed by exposure. He is unfit for the Invalid Corps". Signed at bottom "By Order of Maj. Gen. Schofield" and then signed "J.K. Hudson" with more writing below illegible. Stamped in red ink "paid by Robert Smith St. Louis Oct. 2 1863 Paymaster U.S.A." Also another stamp faint with just the word Ohio at right side above top fold. Verso bears handwritten "Discharge Certificate of Thomas F. Fulford Late of Co. B 64th Regt. Indiana Vols. Infantry". Private Fulford went on to live to the age of 68 fathering 8 children. At his death in 1899 his obituary referred to him as "well known old soldier of Washington Township". Major General John McAllister Schofield 1831 -1906 held major commands during the Civil War and later served as U.S. Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Cleveland Museum of Art 1948. Paperback. Very Good. Unmarked. Exhibition catalog for 1948-1949 exhibition that traveled to 8 museums in the US. All of the paintings came from the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum Berlin except for those by Daumier and Manet which came from the National-Galarie Berlin. Index. 115pp. Over 200 paintings brought to the United States in December 1945 "for safe keeping" by the Department of the Army and stored at the National Gallery in spite of furious opposition from museum directors Gallery staff the public government officials and a resolution in May 1946 from 98 leading art authorities demanding the immediate return of these works to Germany. They were found in April 1945 along with 100 tons of Reichsbank gold by the American Third Army when it captured the Kaiserroda Works at Merkers in Thuringia. The paintings had been stored in salt mines 2100 feet underground for protection from Allied bombing of Berlin. These works were exhibited in 1948 at the request of the Department of the Army and the Senate Armed Services Committee. Following the close of the exhibition custody of the paintings passed from the National Gallery to the Department of the Army. The works were sent on a tour of the country. This catalog is from the Cleveland Museum exhibition one of the venues. Other venues included the Detroit Institute of Arts; Minneapolis Institute of Arts; M.H. de Young Memorial Museum San Francisco; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; City Art Museum of Saint Louis; Carnegie Institute Pittsburgh; and the Toledo Museum of Art Ohio. They parachuted deep behind the German lines to assist in the recapture of France in 1944. Dropped in teams of three the Jeds would rally local opposition to the Germans and conduct guerrilla warfare - sabotage ambush and intelligence gathering - ahead of the advancing Allied armies. In doing so they contributed to the Allied breakout from the Normandy bridgehead and to the rapid advance to the German border. Above all the Jedburgh teams were trained to survive. The three-man teams could not be certain that their communications with London would survive the drop or that any meaningful resupply would be possible. They had to operate alone against extraordinary odds in a country almost entirely occupied by a hostile force prepared to survive pitched battles with the Wehrmacht and relentless manhunts by the Gestapo.
