Gray contributed to the annals of the New York Academy of Sciences with contributions on such topics as the Avestan texts.1 He served as American collaborator on the Orientalische Bibliographie in 1900-1906; revised translations for The Jewish Encyclopedia in 1904-1905; was associate editor of the Hastings Encyclop�dia of Religion and Ethics Edinburgh 1905-15; editor of Mythology of all Races 1915-18; translated Subandhu's Vasavadatta 1913;2 and afterwards 1921 served as professor at the University of Nebraska. From Spanish American War Camps compiled by Fred Greguras Ugennett dot org • Named after Daniel L. Russell the wartime governor of North Carolina. • Muster in site for 2nd N.C. Vol. Inf. regiment according to Steelman North Carolina's Role in the Spanish-American War North Carolina Division of Archives and History 1975. The regiment was mustered out in mid-September 1898. • The 2nd's camp was located at the fairgrounds according to Annual Report of the Adjutant-General of North Carolina for 1898 1899. The Report does not mention the name of the camp Camp Dan Russell but source 4 does as does the Steelman booklet. The fairgrounds were then located at what is now a residential and business district across from the North Carolina State University campus. From wikipedia: Benjamin Grayson Orr 1762-1822 was the fourth mayor of Washington D.C. elected by the council of aldermen in 1817 and serving for two years. Orr probably born in Virginia was a grocer in Georgetown - which in the early 19th century was a separate town from Washington. This copy has several corrections to the dates printed on the the outer wrap title page and on the front of the later Gaylord cover. According to the hand corrections the Register is from 1835 not 1833 the printed dates of 1833 are kept in this description. Also a correction was made to the printer information on the title page: "Blair & Rives" instead of just Blair. Otter Island South Carolina 1862. Letter. Very good. Oblong sheet of form paper. Approx. 10.75" x 8.75." 2 pages. Spelling and grammar are poor. A few small closed tears at the folds and upper edge. Quality of the paper and its condition is good. Eli Smith writes to family possibly friends back home. He writes "I now take my pen in hand to rite you a few lines to let you know that I am well and in the land of living yet and I hope that these few lines will find you the same. He remarks the weather is very fine and that the "hardes fite that had hear was with the flees thay bite us soo bade that we hent got over it yet." Smith hoping to fight remarks "the ounly fite that I have seen since I have ben gone has ben is the Captain cook and nigar." Smith asks the receiver of the letter to "rite as often as you can." From Military Genealogy Trials - Records indicate Eli Smith from Tioga County enlisted September 18th 1861 as a Private in Company G 45th Pennsylvania Regiment. He was wounded with loss of leg at Cold Harbor June 3 1864 - absent at muster out. unknown

This copy is heavily marked in pencil and red pencil with several notes and names concerning the "Powder River Expedition" in Montana 1876. Not to be confused with the 1865 Powder River Expedition the 1876 Powder River Expedition was lead in three stages by General Crook March May and November. See below for details on handwritten notes. This copy has several hand written marks notes and additions consistent with an officer or historian with knowledge about the Powder River Expedition battle: Bottom of page 55 "3rd Regiment of Cavalry" written in pencil "Powder River Expedition against the Hostile Sioux Indians Nov. 15 1876 near Fort Fretterman Wyoming Territory Under Command of Colonel R.S. Mackenzie 4th U.S. Cavalry The following troops of the 3rd Cavalry were engaged as part of the expedition Troops "H" and "K" 3rd Cav." Bottom of page 57 "4th Regiment of Cavalry" a similar statement was written "Powder River Expedition against the Hostile Sioux Indians Nov. 15 1876 near Fort Fretterman Wyoming Territory Under Command of Colonel R.S. Mackenzie 4th U.S. Cavalry: The following 4th Cavalry Troops were engaged Troops "B-D-E-F and M" 4th Cav." Notes on page 107 4th Regiment of Infantry mostly erased but faintly visible. Several notes written on pages 120 121 "9th Regiment of Infantry". Top of page 120 starts with "Under Command of Lt. Col. Several hand written ranks are listed under the names of officers on page 121. At the end of the 9th Regiment of Infantry are notes of officers "retired" and one "Transferred." Continued writings on page 134 "14th Regiment of Infantry" 142 161 and a lengthy addition written at the bottom of page 163 "23rd Regiment of Artillery" with the heading "1876 Col R J Dodge was in command of all Artillery & Infantry troops engaged in the Powder River Expedition." On page 172 "Retired from Active Service" is a short note written next to Abner Doubleday's name - "Invented Baseball Game." Several more pages have marks and underlinings in red pencil and regular pencil. Four names in the index have "killed in Cuba 1898" written next to the soldiers. No ownership name was found in this register. However written in pencil on the back of folding chart D. is "Major General H C Hale 85 years old. died in Palo Alto Calif March 23 1946. Laid inside the rear cover is an illustration titled "Outpost Position" split cleanly and evenly in half. On the blank rear end paper are two inscriptions. The first in pencil states "Last book I bound." The second inscription is very lengthy and interesting - "March 23 1918 Bound this book this a.m. 1421 Walmit. Weather fine. Germans began their much advertised offensive yesterday and still at it today. Have every confidence that the line will hold. Losses in material & territory are to be expected. If the line can be held till Spring '19 the Germans will be whipped. Gen Del sp. Windoms sp. R. Z 830 P.M." Written below the inscription appears to be some sort of code No information found searching the internet on variations of the name inscribed or that of Edw. W. Fischer the name found on the front paste down.
