‎Assad and the peace process: the pivotal role of Lebanon‎

‎Carlisle Barracks PA: U.S. Army War College Strategic Studies Institute 1995. Presumed first edition/first printing. Wraps. Very good. No dust jacket. Cover has slight wear and soiling. v 1 46 p. 23 cm. Maps. Endnotes. From an on-line posting: "This study shows how the Syrian was able to improve his originally weak position in the peace talks by exploiting crisis conditions in Lebanon. Assad's major weapon against the Israelis has been the guerrilla group Hizbollah. The author claims that the fact that a small group of guerrillas could have such an enormous impact in this international drama reveals changed power relations in the strategic Middle East. Dr. Stephen C. Pelletiere served as the Strategic Studies Institute s Middle East expert. Prior to this appointment he was an intelligence officer in Washington monitoring the Iran-Iraq war. Dr. Pelletiere s research deals with America s Dual Containment policy. He holds a B.A. in English from the University of Vermont and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California-Berkeley." U.S. Army War College, Strategic Studies Institute paperback‎

Glossary of British Militry Terms. Abbreviations of the Regiments and Corps of the British Army From Wikipedia: " Her Majesty's Armed Forces commonly known as the British Armed Forces and occasionally the Armed Forces of the Crown are the armed forces of the United Kingdom. The Armed Forces consists of three professional uniformed services: the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Corps forming the Naval Service the British Army and the Royal Air Force. The Commander-in-Chief of Her Majesty's Armed Forces is the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II to whom members of the forces swear allegiance. Under British constitutional law the armed forces are subordinate to the Crown. The British Armed Forces are charged with protecting the United Kingdom its overseas territories and Crown Dependencies as well as promoting Britain's wider security interests and supporting international peacekeeping efforts. They are active and regular participants in NATO and other coalition operations. Britain is also party to the Five Power Defence Arrangements. Recent operations have included wars in Afghanistan and Iraq the 2000 intervention in Sierra Leone peacekeeping responsibilities in the Balkans and Cyprus and participation in the UN-mandated no-fly zone over Libya. ‎Washington DC: United States Department of Defense Dept. of the Army 1960. Wraps. Good. Cover has some wear and soiling. 2 40 2 p. Bibliography. This is a relatively early overview of Chemical Biological and Radiological research. It was produced by the army from a Congressional study/report. The report included recommendations and an input from the United States Army Chemical Corps. From Wikipedia: "Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Defense often abbreviated to CBRN defense or CBRND is protective measures taken in situations in which any of these four hazards are present. To account for improvised devices the term CBRNe e for explosives is used. CBRN defense consists of CBRN passive protection contamination avoidance and CBRN mitigation. CBRN weapons/agents are often referred to as weapons of mass destruction WMD. However this is not entirely correct. Although CBRNe agents often cause mass destruction this is not necessarily the case. Terrorist use of CBRNe agents may cause a limited number of casualties but a large terrorizing and disruption of society. Terrorist use of CBRNe agents intended to cause terror instead of mass casualties is therefore often referred to as weapons of mass disruption. A CBRN incident differs from a hazardous material incident in both effect scope i.e. CBRNe can be a mass casualty situation and in intent. CBRN incidents are responded to under the assumption that they are deliberate malicious acts with the intention to kill sicken and/or disrupt society. Evidence preservation and perpetrator apprehension are of greater concern with CBRN incidents than with HAZMAT incidents." United States, Department of Defense, Dept. of the Army paperback‎

From Wikipedia: "Military engineering is loosely defined as the art and practice of designing and building military works and maintaining lines of military transport and communications. This discipline of engineering is regarded as the oldest form of engineering and is also the precursor of the civil engineering discipline. While both of these disciplines of engineering are responsible for building the same types of projects their environments differ. Military engineers construct and maintain facilities that serve military servicemen on war-fronts. Military engineers are also responsible for logistics behind military tactics. Modern military engineering requires more than civil engineering techniques. In the 21st Century military engineering also includes other engineering disciplines such as mechanical and electrical engineering techniques. According to NATO "Military Engineering is that engineer activity undertaken regardless of component or service to shape the physical operating environment. ' Military Engineering incorporates support to manoeuvre and to the force as a whole including military engineering functions such as engineer support to Force Protection Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Environmental Protection Engineer Intelligence and Military Search. ‎Jachowski R. A. and United States. Department of Defense. Department of the Army. Coastal Engineering Research Center‎

‎Shore Protection Manual‎

‎Fort Belvoir Va. : Washington: U.S. Army Coastal Engineering Research Center: for sale by the Supt. 1975. Second edition. Wraps. Good. Signed by previous owner. Three-hole punched. 3 volume set. 3 v. 27 cm. Illustrations. Various paginations Vol I. approx. 500 p; Vol II. approx. 550 p; and Vol III. 130 p. References. Selected Bibliography. Supersedes its Technical report no. 4 and the first edition: Shore protection planning and design. Includes bibliographies and index. From WIkipedia for Coastal Management: "In some jurisdictions the terms sea defense and coastal protection are used to mean respectively defense against flooding and erosion. The term coastal defence is the more traditional term but coastal management has become more popular as the field has expanded to include techniques that allow erosion to claim land. The coastal zone is a dynamic equilibrium area of natural change and of increasing human use. They occupy less than 15% of the Earth's land surface; yet accommodate more than 40% of the world population it is estimated that 3.1 billion people live within 200 kilometres from the sea. With three-quarters of the world population expected to reside in the coastal zone by 2025 human activities originating from this small land area will impose an inordinate amount of pressures on the global system. Coastal zones contain rich resources to produce goods and services and are home to most commercial and industrial activities. In the European Union almost half of the population now lives within 50 kilometres of the sea and coastal zone resources produce much of the Union's economic wealth. The fishing shipping and tourism industries all compete for vital space along Europe's estimated 89 000 kilometres of coastline and coastal zones contain some of Europe's most fragile and valuable natural habitats. Shore protection consists up to the 50's of interposing a static structure between the sea and the land to prevent erosion and or flooding and it has a long history. From that period new technical or friendly policies have been developed to preserve the environment when possible. Is already important where there are extensive low-lying areas that require protection. For instance: Venice New Orleans Nagara river in Japan the Netherlands Caspian Sea Protection against the sea level rise in the 21st century will be especially important as sea level rise is currently accelerating. This will be a challenge to coastal management since seawalls and breakwaters are generally expensive to construct and the costs to build protection in the face of sea-level rise would be enormous. Changes on sea level have a direct adaptative response from beaches and coastal systems as we can see in the succession of a lowering sea level. When the sea level rises coastal sediments are in part pushed up by wave and tide energy so sea-level rise processes have a component of sediment transport landwards. This results in a dynamic model of rise effects with a continuous sediment displacement that is not compatible with static models where coastline change is only based on topographic data." The U.S. Army Coastal Engineering Reserach Center CERC formerly the Beach Erosion Board has since 1930 conducted studies on shore processes and methods of shore protection. It is also involved in both shore protection and offshore engineering techniques. This SHore Protection Manual SPM incorporates new material and expands the coverage within the shore protection field. Volume I describes the physical environment in the coastal zone. Volume II addresses the interaction of the physical environment and the coastal structures and presents design parameters for use in the solution of coastal engineering problems. Volume II containcs four appendixes including a glossary of coastal engineering terms a list of symbols tables and plates and a subject index. ‎Services for the Use of the Grand Army of the Republic. January 1 1894‎

‎Headquarters Grand Army of the Republis 1894. Hardcover. Fair. Front board weak strengthen with glue. Cover has some wear and soiling. 70 p. From Wikipedia: "The Grand Army of the Republic GAR was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army US Navy Marines and Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War. Founded in 1866 in Decatur Illinois it was dissolved in 1956 when its last member died. Linking men through their experience of the war the GAR became among the first organized advocacy groups in American politics supporting voting rights for black veterans lobbying the US Congress to establish veterans' pensions and supporting Republican political candidates. Its peak membership at more than 490 000 was in 1890 a high point of Civil War commemorative ceremonies. It was succeeded by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War SUVCW composed of male descendants of Union veterans. After the end of American Civil War organizations were formed for veterans to network and maintain connections with each other. Many of the veterans used their shared experiences as a basis for fellowship. Groups of men began joining together first for camaraderie and later for political power. Emerging as most influential among the various organizations was the Grand Army of the Republic founded on April 6 1866 on the principles of "Fraternity Charity and Loyalty " in Decatur Illinois by Benjamin F. Stephenson. The GAR initially grew and prospered as a de facto political arm of the Republican Party during the heated political contests of the Reconstruction era. The commemoration of Union veterans black and white immediately became entwined with partisan politics. The GAR promoted voting rights for black veterans as many veterans recognized their demonstrated patriotism. Black veterans who enthusiastically embraced the message of equality shunned black veterans' organizations in preference for racially inclusive groups. But when the Republican Party's commitment to reform in the South gradually decreased the GAR's mission became ill-defined and the organization floundered. The GAR almost disappeared in the early 1870s and many divisions ceased to exist. In the 1880s the organization revived under new leadership that provided a platform for renewed growth by advocating federal pensions for veterans. As the organization revived black veterans joined in significant numbers and organized local posts. The national organization however failed to press the case for pensions for black soldiers. Most black troops never received any pension or remuneration for wounds incurred during their service. The GAR was organized into "Departments" at the state level and "Posts" at the community level and military-style uniforms were worn by its members. There were posts in every state in the U.S. and several posts overseas. The pattern of establishing departments and local posts was later used by other veterans' organizations such as the American Legion WWI and the Veterans of Foreign Wars WWII. In 1868 Commander-in-Chief General John A. Logan established May 30 as Decoration Day later known as Memorial Day. Numerous people and places claim this credit. In its first celebrations people used this day to commemorate the dead of the Civil War by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. The GAR's political power grew during the latter part of the 19th century and it helped elect several Republican United States presidents beginning with Ulysses S. Grant and ending with William McKinley. Five members were elected president of the United States. For a time candidates could not get nominated to the Republican ticket without the endorsement of the GAR voting bloc." Headquarters Grand Army of the Republis hardcover‎
