La France s'est tenue à l'écart de la controverse jusqu'à la traduction, en 1993, du grand livre de Geoffrey Parker, La Révolution militaire. Le concept paraît mal défini ; ses contours changent d'un historien à l'autre. Pourtant, les interrogations qu'il a suscitées ont permis une réelle avancée de l'histoire militaire. Celle-ci une fois acquise, doit-on conserver et approfondir l'idée ou faut-il au contraire l'abandonner ? C'est pour répondre à cette question, pour mieux cerner les contours de cette appellation " fourre-tout ", que des historiens militaires se sont réunis à Saint-Coëtquidant pour une journée d'étude au cours de laquelle ont été évalués les mérites et les insuffisances du concept, ainsi que certaines applications spécifiques, notamment en matière de fortifications et en Europe orientale.
