Paget Henry 1st Marquess of Anglesey. 1768 1854. British army officer and politician. Cavalry officer in the Peninsula War and
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY BRITISH CAVALRY COMMANDER HENRY PAGET 1ST MARQUESS OF ANGELSEY.
February 6th 1847. 1847. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling almost 3 sides of a sheet of light gray paper folded once to form 4 sides approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 4-5/8 inches wide. The letter has been mounted on a lightly larger sheet of cream-colored stiff paper. Signed "Anglesey" There are a few small ink smudges to the 2nd & 3rd sides. Very good.
The letter is addressed to Scottish geologist Sir Roderick Murchison and concerns a publication which Murchison is proposing and how it would be funded. "Some Estimate of the probable cost of money and of time is called for from General Colby and when it is received you shall again hear from me." The reference is probably to General Thomas Frederic Colby a leading geographer who had been director of the Ordnance Survey.
Henry Paget 1st Marquess of Anglesey 1768-1854 was a British army officer and politician. After serving as Member of Parliament for Carnarvon and then for Milborne Port he took part in the Flanders Campaign. During the Peninsula War he commanded the cavalry for Sir John Moore's army in Spain and at the Battle of Sahagun virtually destroyed a regiment of French cavalry. He led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d'Erlon's column at the Battle of Waterloo losing part of one of his legs to a cannonball at the end of the battle. In later life he served as Master-General of Ordnance from 1846 to 1852.
The Scottish geologist Sir Roderick sometimes as here spelled "Rhoderick" Impey Murchison 1st Baronet 1792-1871 was the first to describe and investigate the Silurian system. Palmer Bruce Jr. 1913 2000. Noted United States Army General who served as Commander in Chief United States Readiness Comman
TYPED LETTER ON THE SUBJECT OF WORLD PEACE SIGNED BY U.S. ARMY GENERAL AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF UNITED STATES READINESS COMMAND BRUCE PALMER JR.
MacDill Air Force Base FL: February 12 1973. 1973. Very good. - Palmer's lengthy 2-1/2 page letter is typed on a cream-colored 10-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide sheet of United States Readiness Command letterhead with the address & the Department of Defense seal printed at the top and on 2 follow-up sheets. Printed at the foot of the letterhead are the words "Readiness.Key to Peace". Signed "Bruce Palmer Jr". The sheets are lightly bumped & stapled together at top right. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.
Palmer replies to a letter from Congressman Seymour Halpern asking him for his thoughts on how to achieve a lasting world peace. Palmer writes a long and thoughtful letter giving his views on the subject and considering the problems and challenges ahead. "The means of achieving this goal are several. First and foremost is to maintain strength and stability in our own domestic economy and political system. Secondly in the realization that we cannot go it alone-- economically politically or militarily--is the need for collective security enhancing our own security through collective arrangements with other nations. Our moral economic political and military strength and leadership have played the key role in the collective security of the Free World for more than twenty-five years."
Bruce Palmer Jr. 1913-2000 served in the United States Army from 1936 to 1974. From 1967-68 he was commander of II Field Force Vietnam and deputy commander of the United States Army Vietnam. He was acting Chief of Staff of the United States Army from July to October 1972 and from 1973 until his retirement he was commander in chief of the United States Readiness Command.
The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. MacDill Air Force Base, FL: February 12, 1973. unknown

Nancy: Societe d'Impressions Typographiques 1951. 1951. Very good. SIGNED BY GENERAL KOENIG - Octavo 8-1/4 inches high by 5-3/8 inches wide. Printed stapled paper wraps. 16 pages including the covers. There is a horizontal crease through the center of the pamphlet likely from having been folded and 2 small remnants of mounting tape on the blank rear cover.
Boldly signed in ink by General Koenig on the front cover.
General Koenig gives a report in favor of furthering the development reorganization and funding of the French armed forces. Briefly touching on France's role in Indochina & North Africa he argues against the dependence on a "European" armed force and concludes with the argument that while Germany seeks to reclaim equality of rights within the European continent it should not be allowed to rebuild its armed forces as others namely some in the U.S. have argued in context of the Cold War.
The French Army General and politician Marie-Pierre Koenig 1898- 1970 commanded a Free French Brigade at the Battle of Bir Hakeim in North Africa in 1942 and commanded the Free French that participated in the Normandy invasion in 1944. Born in Caen Koenig distinguished himself in the First World War and subsequently served in Morocco and Cameroon until the start of the Second World War. He was first assigned as a captain with the French troops in Norway for which service he was awarded the Norwegian Krigskorset med Swerd medal in 1942. He fled to London following France's fall to German forces where he became chief of staff in the first divisions of the Free French Forces and was soon involved in the campaigns in Syria and Lebanon. Promoted to General he was assigned command of the First French Brigade in Egypt where he and his small unit of 3700 men held off 5 full Axis divisions for 16 days at the Battle of Bir Hakeim in 1942. He served under General Dwight D. Eisenhower as a Free French delegate to the Allied headquarters and was given command of the Free French forces who participated in the Invasion of Normandy in 1944. Given command of the French Forces he unified the French Resistance groups in support of the advancing Allied troops encouraging sabotage efforts instead of pitched battles. De Gaulle appointed him military governor of Paris in 1944 charging him with restoring law and order. In 1945 he was assigned to arrest Marshal Petain. After the war he held several commands and following his retirement in 1951 Koenig was elected as Gaullist representative to the French National Assembly briefly serving as minister of defence. Having witnessed the heroism of a battalion from the Jewish Brigade who were charged with laying mines during the 1942 Battle of Bir Hakeim Koenig broke the rules and allowed them to fly their own Star-of-David flag. After the war as president of the Franco-Israeli Committee he supported the new state of Israel.
The U.S. Congress honored Koenig wih the Congressional Gold Medal the U.K. with the Distinguished Service Order and France with the Croix de Guerre.
RARE. He confronts the apparent contradiction posed by his belief that world peace is the most desirable condition for the welfare of mankind: "My career of service as a soldier bespeaks a less than complete conviction in the ability of men to resolve their differences and reconcile their ambitions without resorting to arms". He concludes that only a national effort "to turn anew toward the goal of becoming 'one Nation under God'" will result in "an outpouring of God's blessings that could include peace."
Ralph Edward Haines Jr. 1913-2011 was a U.S. Army four star general who served as Vice Chief of Staff of the Army 1967-1968; Commander U.S. Army Pacific 1968-1970 and Commanding General U.S. Continental Army Command 1970-1973. He was the last commander of the Continental Army. At his death he was the Army's oldest living four star general and its senior retired officer. February 5, 1973. unknown

BRITISH ARMY
Colburn's united service magazine and naval and military journal. No. CCCXXXI. June 1856
London: Hurst and Blackett 1856. 10 159-316pp. Uncut in original publisher's pink printed paper wrappers. A trifle worn and browned loss to head and foot of split spine. Occasional slight marginal loss and tearing from Cefntilla family seat of the Raglan baronetcy though not identified as such. A rare survival in original wrappers of a single monthly part of Colburn's United Service Magazine a periodical dedicated to relating the recent actions of the British Army and Royal Navy. This issue contains an article on a then newly discovered proposal by Emperor Napoleon III to conduct a war in the Crimea alongside the British. It is iimplied in the piece that Lord Raglan to whose family this copy belonged was approached for his opinion on the matter but thought it inadvisable. Following the death of Fitzroy James Henry Somerset 1st Baron Raglan 1788-1855 commander of allied forces during the Crimean War 1623 of his friends admirers and comrades purchased the estate of Cefntilla Court in Monmouthshire Wales presenting the home to Richard Somerset 2nd Baron Raglan 1817-1884 and his heirs in perpetuity as a memorial in remembrance of his father's contribution to the British military. . 8vo.
