Single sheet, a near fine copy. Signed simply 'Wavell' in the writer's usual manner, the letter is written to Geoffrey Moore, founder of the Buccaneers Cricket Club, and demonstrates the soldier's keen and continuing interest in the sport. It is noteworthy that Wavell was particularly proud of his membership of the MCC at Lords. The letter confirms that Wavell will propose the toast at the Buccaneers' annual dinner (held at Lords). Field-Marshal Earl Wavell (1883-1950) was one of the twentieth century's most distinguished British soldiers. Following considerable success against the Italians in North Africa, his career reached its peak with his appointment as Supreme Allied Commander, South West Pacific, ABDA (American, British, Dutch and Australian) Command in 1942 and subsequently as an outstanding Viceroy and Governor General of India from 1943-1947. He was recognised also as a scholar, compiling the well-known anthology of poetry 'Other Mens's Flowers' (1944). The bulk of Wavell's papers are now housed in the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College, London. Founded in 1930, The Buccaneers is one of the oldest and most famous 'wandering' clubs in English cricket (a 'wandering' club has no fixed home ground but plays as an away team relying on the hospitality of the home clubs against which it competes). The Club's history has been written twice, by Clifford Bax in 1956 and more recently by Howard Spencer. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY WAVELL ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE.

As part of Horrocks' 30 Corps the division captured Mount Picon, the key to Normandy, forced the crossing of the Seine, took part in Operation GARDEN, were the first British troops to fight in Germany, and turned the tide in the Reichswald enabling the Allies to close with the Rhine. The rarest of all the major Services of Thanksgiving throughout the British Army in WWII, this humble document is considerably harder to find than its Second or Eighth Army counterparts. Anderson's First Army was formed in November 1942 as the spearhead of the land forces of TORCH, the Allied landings is Algeria and Morocco. Taking its final shape as Eastern Task Force in January 1943, it eventually comprised American II Corps, British V and IX Corps, and French XIX Corps. Following the landings First Army attempted to secure the Tunisian shoreline, but time was against it and the campaign became principally one of long-distance logistics. After the success of Eighth Army at Alamein, First Army carried eastwards the main thrust of 18 Army Group's offensive that resulted in the final defeat of the Axis in North Africa in mid-1943 (a victory often compared strategically with Stalingrad). Its job done, First Army was disbanded later in the year and its units reallocated. Rare in any condition.

Sm. 4to., on laid paper; original printed wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, upper wrapper with divisional crest in yellow and black, lower wrapper with small unobtrusive stain in one corner, a remarkably clean, bright copy. A key component of Second Army, the famous West Country Division captured Mount Picon, forced the crossing of the Seine, were the first British troops to fight in Germany, and turned the tide in the Reichswald enabling the Allies to close with the Rhine. As part of Horrocks' 30 Corps, the division also took part in the headlong rush to Nijmegen in GARDEN. Locally printed, probably on a commissioned press, this humble pamphlet is nevertheless a moving tribute to one of the most famous British fighting units of WWII. A RARE SURVIVAL AND CONSIDERABLY MORE ELUSIVE THAN ITS SECOND ARMY COUNTERPART.

First issued in July 1940. 'The Information given in this document is not to be communicated, either directly or indirectly, to the Press or to any person not holding an official position in His Majesty's Service.' The purpose of this pamphlet is to give all ranks an idea of the appearance of the German soldier and his armament. It is being issued down to Platoon, etc. commanders'. The first edition is extremely scarce. COPAC gives only two entries (BL and NLS) for the 1941 reissue.

With 17pp publisher's catalogue on pink stock bound in at front and rear.The compilation of the Manual of Military Law was initiated by Secretary of State for War Stanley in 1879. In order to produce a single comprehensive manual the Rules of Procedure required considerable legal amendment, including the repeal and replacement of the Army Discipline and Regulation Act 1879 by the Army Act 1881. The first edition was approved by both Childers and Hartington and published in 1884. The present edition contains an entirely new chapter on the laws and usages of war, revisions resulting from the Army Reforms of 1908, and (notably) the inclusion for the first time of the Official Secrets Act. It is arguably the most significant single issue, containing as it does the broadest set of amendments stemming from sea changes in service structure and practice. Fortunately it was completed in time for the conflict about to come. COPIES OF THE SIXTH EDITION ARE UNACCOUNTABLY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. A RARE SURVIVAL.
