It was commonly found in fighter pilot's survival vests lifeboats and in survival pouches or canvas bags carried in bomber aircraft in flight suits and anywhere aircrew could store it along with other survival items. . The book outlines survival techniques in four different environments. How to signal searching friendly air forces how to identify edible plants & fruit how to trap animals monkeys for food which plants to eat how to insulate and protect your body from the elements and how to avoid the enemy. How to make fire how to keep warm cool dry and protect your body from bugs snakes and other dangers. . This book and the cloth 'survival' maps along with other survival gear were contained in a 4 x 11 inch waterproof pouch in aircraft or the essential items removed and stuffed into the flight suit or survival vest with pistol holster. . RARITY: This ephemeral small book was commonly lost in the shuffle and few if any decent clean & complete copies 'survived' the war no pun intended !! . The majority of these books were exhausted during the war damaged by weather the "attrition rate" or lost in air crashes & other common calamaties. Per the caption this item was issued to " "Air crews of the 5th & 13th Air Forces operating in the Pacific." . This book was also issued to the 14th Air Force based in Kunming S.W. China where the "A.V.G." "AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP" and later in 1942 the by the famed "FLYING TIGERS" who flew combat fighter aircraft against the Japanese air force over Burma and China. . This book and other cloth "survival" maps were commonly carried by fighter pilots and bomber crews on combat missions. .
