Laurence Irving 1897 1988 Hollywood set designer artist and RAF Squadron Leader grandson of the actor Sir Henry Irving 'Edwa
Laurence Irving Hollywood set designer. Two Typed Letters Signed 'Laurence' and 'Laurence Irving' to 'Teddy' set designer 'Edward Carrick'i.e. Edward Craig regarding the film industry and his membership of the Society of Art Directors.
Both on his letterhead 11 Apple Tree Yard. 23 August and 24 November 1949. Both items in good condition lightly-aged. ONE: 2pp. 4to. Having returned from 'a rather long painting expedition to France' he finds that 'circumstances have arisen in regard to the administration of the Society' the Society of British Film Art Directors and Designers of which Craig was a leading light and in the light of these circumstances Irving feels compelled to resign. 'It is . unlikely that I shall design any more films. Life is short and there is so much to be done that even if anybody wished me to I should hesitate to commit myself to the months not only of work but of preoccupation which a film production involves. Quite apart from this I feel that the principles of film design which however wrongly I have always advocated are being abandoned naturally in the face of economic pressure and the general registration of film making. I am old fashioned enough to believe that the situation into which films have fallen is very largely due to the insistance sic of those who have misguidedly and not very successfully tried to make it into an industry rather than a medium of expression for groups of artists of enterprise and imagination.' Two more paragraphs follow before the letter ends. TWO: 1p. 4to. Following the last letter Irving has been offered honorary membership of the Society and writes: 'I do not feel that I deserve such consideration for you and several others have striven hard to maintain the prestige of Art Directors in the gruelling factory conditions of commercial studios through good and bad times. However as you well know to an artist the only commendation or criticism which really touches him is that of his fellow craftsmen .'. He offers his assistance to the Society before ending: 'I heard from Flower that your meeting in London was a success and that you are going to get out drawings and plans for the proposed Elizabethan theatre. I am very glad to hear this and I know you will find the Stratford people charming to deal with.' Both on his letterhead, 11 Apple Tree Yard. 23 August and 24 November 1949. unknown

McDonald, Squadron Leader J. D.
The Pitcher and the Well.
London: Oldbourne 1962. First British Edition. Octavo blue boards hardcover gilt letters 224 pp. Near Fine with bookplate; in a Very Good dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges and darkened spine. From dust jakcet: One of the most sensitive and moving narratives of World War II this book was dictated to a fellow P.O.W. in a German prison camp by a New Zealand bomb navigator lying in a hospital bed suffering from the burns which eventually killed him. In 1944 Squadron Leader McDonald received in New Zealand a large parcel labelled “Effects of deceased prisoner of war.†The parcel contained the manuscripts he edited. In peace-time the author was a failure in his career and in his private life. When war came he found fulfilment as a member of a bomber crew. He was a brilliant navigator resolute courageous cheerfully ruthless. In the intervals between bombing missions he found that he was attractive to women and his attitude to them is expressed with the sardonic rather heartless irony of a man who knew he was unlikely to live to become a husband. The author’s character was flawed yet he was a likeable person. His imagination was restless and even on bombing raids he felt that the women and children on the ground below the targets were as much his own as the war’s victims. He wrote vividly whether telling his own story or very occasionally describing the people he had met such as “the civvy carpenter arrayed in all the splendour of an R.A.F sergeant’s uniform blithely setting out to walk a hundred miles across the fortress Europe to the sea. Confident that the sea being British territory would bring forth his deliverance. He knew two words of German Guten Morgen pronounced in the way they do in Birmingham. Yet he made it. It took him a fortniight. Oldbourne, (1962). First British Edition. hardcover

Members of the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron
Cooks to the Galley: a book of recipes suitable for preparing in the galley of a yacht presented by members of the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron in commemoration of their Centenary Year 1869-1969
Adelaide : The Griffin Press for Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron: 1969 First Edition. Pictorial wrappers that is paper covers pp. 70 235 x 152 mm. Vignettes by A.J. and nautical photographs including four different style galleys additional to pagination. A fascinating glimpse into an affluent middle-class leisure activity; the contributors named and often with the name of the craft include a high proportion of men unusual for a cook book. Significantly all recipes can be cooked on the small stove of a yacht except notably the Cakes Biscuits and Buns recipes which with perhaps the exception of Con. Scotts Beer Cake are contributed by women. The New Recipe pages at the end are unused and the book remains about fine. unknown
