‎Gutes Exemplar. - Geschrieben: 1977/1978 - Abgeschlossen: 1984. - Bodo Scheurig (* 1928 in Berlin; ? 29. April 2008 in Berlin) war ein deutscher Historiker und Autor. Bodo Scheurig studierte nach sowjetischer Kriegsgefangenschaft Neuere Geschichte und Philosophie an der Freien Universität Berlin und an der Columbia University, New York. In Berlin studierte er unter anderem bei Hans Herzfeld, als dessen Schüler er bezeichnet wird. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche Bücher und Aufsätze vor allem über den konservativen Widerstand gegen Hitler und 1964 die erste Biografie über Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg. Bekannt wurde auch sein Buch über das Nationalkomitee Freies Deutschland, das zuerst 1960 erschien und zuletzt 1993 unter dem Titel Verräter oder Patrioten: Das Nationalkomitee "Freies Deutschland" und der Bund Deutscher Offiziere in der Sowjetunion 1943-1945 aufgelegt wurde. Seinen Nachlass erwarb die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Eine "Sammlung Bodo Scheurig" mit Unterlagen zum konservativen Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus befindet sich auch im Institut für Zeitgeschichte in München, die teilweise digitalisiert zugänglich ist. ? Mit ihr kehrt er sich ab von seiner Einheit, verwirft er - als politisch bewußt Handelnder - Herrschende und Regime. Wirkungslos bei wenigen, kann die Desertion vieler Schleusen öffnen. Immer haben Staaten und Armeen diese Gefahren erkannt. Von vornherein mißtrauisch, stets auf der Lauer, wehren sie erbittert allen Anfängen des Abfalls. Selbstprüfung hat selten eine Chance. Was zu tun ist, will die Führung bestimmen. Sie beansprucht, das Denken des Volkes zu repräsentieren; wie, so ihre nicht unzutreffende Folgerung, wäre sie sonst an die Macht gelangt? Soldaten, die in Reih und Glied stehen, sollen daher gehorchen, vollstrecken. Unbotmäßigkeit mindert die verlangte Schlagkraft. Schon im Protest des einzelnen steckt der Keim zur Revolution. Kritisch gewordene Lagen können "Konzessionen" erzwingen. Dann müssen sogenannte statuierte Exempel helfen, den drohenden Absprung von Massen zu unterbinden. Aber selbst bedrängte Staaten und Armeen weichen lediglich um den Schritt zurück, der angewachsenen Unmut zu zerstreuen sucht. Als 1917 nahezu 45 französische Divisionen meuterten und Tausende desertierten, hatte Henri Philippe Petain einzuspringen. Der Marschall tat es: gewandt und geschmeidig. Wäre er indes unfähig gewesen, den aufschreckenden Dammbruch zu kitten, hätte man nicht nur einige Übeltäter füsiliert. Vietnam, schien es, durchbrach übliche Regeln. Zahlreiche Deserteure veranlaßten Amerikas Führung einzulenken: Abbild eines Krieges, in dem man weniger Recht als Verbrechen zu erblicken begonnen hatte. Milde wollte die Entlaufenen ködern und zur Heimkehr bewegen, doch auch Fords Regierung - am Fernost-Kampf unschuldig - weigerte sich, der Desertion Straffreiheit zu gewähren, Jimmy Carter, der nächste US-Präsident im Amt, ebenso. ? Inscribed on laid paper water-marked "OCR" a mark not found in Gravell. This pair of letters from General Philip Schuyler to Major Yates contains orders for the troops including preparations and various actions to be undertaken in the field issued in late June the week before the Siege of Fort Ticonderoga the first week of July 1777. The 1777 Siege of Fort Ticonderoga occurred between July second and sixth 1777 near the southern end of Lake Champlain in the state of New York. Lieutenant General John Burgoyne's 8000-man army occupied high ground above the fort and nearly surrounded the defenses. These movements forced the occupying Continental Army an under-strength force of 3000 under the command of General Arthur St. Clair to withdraw from Ticonderoga and the surrounding defenses. Some gunfire was exchanged and there were some casualties but there was no formal siege and no pitched battle. Burgoyne's army occupied Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence the extensive fortifications on the Vermont side of the lake without opposition on 6 July. Advance units pursued the retreating Americans. The uncontested surrender of Ticonderoga caused an uproar in the American public and in its military circles as Ticonderoga was widely believed to be virtually impregnable and a vital point of defense. General St. Clair and his superior General Philip Schuyler were vilified by Congress. Both were eventually exonerated in courts martial but their careers were adversely affected. Schuyler had already lost his command to Horatio Gates by the time of the court martial and St. Clair held no more field commands for the remainder of the war.
