Charles-Gabriel d'Arsac, marquis de Ternay (1771-1813), officier, tacticien écrivain militaire. L.A.S., 18 novembre 1796, 4p in-4. Très intéressante lettre sur son projet d'ouvrage, probablement son traité de tactique qui ne sera publié qu'en 1832 (2 volumes + atlas). Il est notamment question de traduire l'ouvrage de Georg-Friedrich von Tempelhoff (1737-1807), des bontés de ce dernier, du travail à faire pour son ouvrage notamment les cartes, livrant de nombreux détails. Il précise aussi ne pouvoir entrer au service de la Prusse et envisager changer de pays. En effet, Ternay, député aux états généraux de 1789, émigra, fit partie de l'armée des princes et, à défaut de pouvoir s'engager en Prusse, fut admis au service de la Grande-Bretagne en 1795, donc peu après ce courrier. Tempelhoff avait publié divers ouvrages de tactique militaire. Beau courrier. [374]
