Starting in 1755 Duhamel began publishing an eight-volume work titled Traité complet des Bois et des Fôrets that would attempt to detail all aspects of trees including their planting growth maintenance and transportation. The first installation started with two volumes titled Traité des Arbres et Arbustes 1755. Other titles that were included in the comprehensive work were La Physique des Arbres 1758 De l’Exploitation des Bois 1764 and finally Du Transport 1767.Between the years 1752 and 1777 he authored various works that appeared both in Diderot’s Encyclopédie and the Dictionnaire des Arts et Metiers. Among the more than 20 subjects he covered were metallurgy tobacco pipes and the kilns used in their manufacturing the printing of playing cards candlesticks paste soap locks refining sugar and fishing.Duhamel died in Paris on August 13 1782. At the time of his death his forests in Vrigny and Denainvilliers contained no less than 692 different species of trees. First edition of an exhaustive work on the fabrication of hemp rope for ships from raising the plant to extracting the raw materials to manufacturing cordage. But perhaps most significant as one of the earliest treatises on the commercial cultivation of cannabis. Includes two lovely and detailed fold-out plates of the male and female plants both fine that would make High Times proud. Though not exactly institutionally rare OCLC locates ten copies of this edition seven in the U.S. it is so in the trade with none currently in commerce and only a handful at auction since 1980. A second volume was published in 1769. Polak 2858. Scott 341 citing only the 2nd edition this one presumably scarcer. Hardcover. 4to. Full contemporary calf with gilt titles and decorative spine. Engraved and woodcut initials woodcut diagrams and head- and tail-pieces. Joints cracked though intact. Spine laid down. Internally fine very good overall. Published first in 1753 the second edition has been corrected and enlarged. An important study by a member of the Royal Society of Sciences and the Royal Society of London. Duhamel du Moceau Henri-Louis 1700-1782. Attended science lectures at Jardindu roi; elected to Academie royale des Sciences 1728 after his demonstrations that blight of the saffron plant was caused by a parasite. In chemistry studies Forbenius' ether with Jean Grosse; argued that salts had different fixed alkaline components which were essentially soda and potash. Interest in botany and agronomy led to study of cultivation and use of timer; became naval inspector and wrote on structural properties of wood and rigging of ships. Contributed to improvement of French agriculture by exposition and occasional criticism of theories of Jethro Toll. - DSB p214. Paris. Light wear to extremities internally very nice and clean. 2 384 pp. 6 folded plates; 4 454 2 pp. 9 folded plates. <br/><br/><em>Second revised and enlarged edition of one of the most famous treatises published by the great French agronomist Henry Louis Duhamel du Monceau 1700-1782 in order to introduce Jethro Tull's innovative methods to France. Tull is considered to be one of the early proponents of a scientific – and especially empirical – approach to agriculture. He helped transform agricultural practices by inventing or improving numerous implements. "The first half of the eighteenth century had witnessed the beginning of a technological renaissance in agriculture chiefly in England where it was notably celebrated in the writings of Jethro Tull.
