‎Tra gli uomini illustri Bismarck merita senz'altro una menzione speciale. La sua figura domina tutto il XIX secolo e la sua ombra si estende anche su quello successivo. Padre dell'unificazione tedesca e fondatore del Secondo Reich, fu un personaggio controverso e dicotomico: intere generazioni di storici ancora discutono sui mezzi da lui messi in campo per arrivare all'unità e sulle conseguenze da essa prodotte. Bismarck fu reazionario e rivoluzionario allo stesso tempo, legato al potere monarchico e a un'impostazione feudale della società, seppe tuttavia cogliere la potenza dei cambiamenti che le nuove istanze liberali portavano con sé. La sua politica non si lascia racchiudere in uno schema rigido e riduttivo: il suo talento a comporre e conciliare gli opposti aveva colpito i suoi contemporanei al punto che Federico Guglielmo IV lo chiamava il "reazionario rosso". Altri, dando una lettura diversa del suo dualismo, credono di ravvisare dei tratti bonapartisti nei suoi metodi e nella sua vicenda politica. Autori: Jean-Paul Bled.
