Recent black cloth 3-ring binder stamping on front cover images all with excellent strong contrast in NF condition. This extraordinary archive of photographs documents the construction projects building of the Bonneville Dam and installation of power generating equipment by an unknown Public Works Administration photographer. As one of the most successful New Deal agencies created by Roosevelt’s National Industrial Recovery Act this one was headed by Harold Ickes and emphasized large scale public works projects such as dam building bridge building and more to revive the economy. These images begin by documenting the movement of railroad lines for the Bonneville Power & Navigation Projects; new foundations on the Washington side for a relocated railroad station; road grading; construction of the Administration Building for the project and laying of new utility lines; several shots of construction along near the Tooth Rock Tunnel near the Cascade Locks as well as steel bridge across Eagle Creek. Photos also show the massive Tainter Vale for the Bonneville Ship Lock fabricated by McClintic-Marshall as well as several images of the control panels installed in the Bonneville Dam power house. Two aerial photos show the massive spillway the powerhouse and locks and the Navigation Locks being finished on the Oregon side. At the height of the Great Depression this project drew 3000 workers many from the relief rolls in Portland OR and surrounding areas paying them .50 per hour wages. The Bonneville Power Administration was created by Congress in 1937 to market and sell the power produced by the Bonneville Dam. Several of the photos show the massive turbine shaft interiors of the ship locks drying out power transformers built by Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing the massive 48000 KVA 13800 Volt A/C Waterwheel Generators by General Electric and other equipment being installed in the power station at Bonneville. In addition this archive includes photos of instrument panels with covers removed showing wiring and circuitry below; the assembly stages of the massive generators cooling equipment pieces returned for repair by the manufacturer and the coil housings. The first power house lock and dam were completed in 1938 providing electricity for the Bonneville Power Administration improved river navigation and gave rise to the Pacific Northwest aluminum industry which was critical for Boeing during World War II producing aircraft for the war effort. The Public Works Administration proved to be one of the most successful New Deal programs was much less controversial than the Works Progress Administration which focused on employing unskilled workers and generating a host of projects to employ many under utilized professionals and artists during the Depression.
