Scholl les passera quand il veut car « je ne veux pas nuire aux jeunes gens qui vous secondent si bien ». Il lui demande de mettre 100 francs à disposition chez son portier car il doit envoyer cette somme à une vieille dame. Il propose aussi quelques lignes sur l'opéra, gratuitement. Il s'agit vraisemblablement d'une collaboration pour le Nain Jaune. La date du 18 juillet (sans l'année) est donnée par une autre lettre du 17 juillet. En effet, le 17, il envoie une chaîne et dans cette lettre, il annonce avoir envoyé la chaine la veille. Cette chaine a un rapport avec les chaines des montres laissées en gage au préteur Moppert de Bade. La lettre est donc écrite de Bade. [206]

Il perd au jeu depuis deux mois et demi « avec une constance admirable du côté de la noire et une absence perpétuelle du 14 & du 17 » (donc au jeu de la roulette). « Ce que j'ai perdu est heureusement incalculable, ce qui me dispense de le compter, l'ignorance en pareil cas ne trouble pas le sommeil ». Magnifique lettre autour de sa passion pour le jeu : « Mon cher ami, je viens de faire une bêtise que je n'avais pas faite depuis 1848 ; j'ai passé la nuit dernière dans un cercle votre voisin au moment même où je venais de dire à notre ami [Albert] Wolff que je ne jouais plus de nuit au jeu. Cela me serait fort égal si le lendemain eut été un jour ordinaire, mais je tombe sur un affreux dimanche, jour de recouvrement impossible et d'absences universelles. J'ai été assez étourdi, à mon âge, pour ignorer que le lendemain de samedi était toujours un dimanche. Après avoir perdu tout mon comptant, selon mon usage aléatoire, j'ai joué sur parole, contre mon usage. Vers midi, je dois satisfaire mes inconnus. Il me manque dix louis pour compléter 900 francs. C'est peu, mais c'est énorme à cause de la circonstance. ». Le reste concerne un article de Méry, trop long, qui doit être divisé. Superbe lettre.

Il envoie avec cette lettre « la chaîne prisonnière de Moppert ». Il fait référence à Jean-Baptiste-Aloyse Moppert, préteur sur gage de Bade, à qui étaient laissés les bijoux et en particulier les montres, et donc les chaînes. Une anecdote raconte que des jeunes gens s'étaient amusés à mettre ces chaînes bout-à-bout. Peut-être est-ce un bout de cette chaine qui fut envoyée à Scholl ici. « J'ai déjà fait 4 ascensions à la villa du maître, & je l'ai toujours trouvé absent, il est domicilié dans le voisinage d'Achern, je dois le voir demain, & je parlerai ». Cet énigmatique passage s'explique simplement : il s'agit de Dostoïevski, présent l'été 1863 à Bade. Méry aura voulu le rencontrer. La rencontre s'est forcément passée car ces deux accrocs au jeu se sont forcément retrouvés ensemble dans un casino. La lettre parle ensuite longuement de la vie artistique sur place, des pièces jouées. Ainsi qu'une intéressante partie sur Nadar : « Nadar est arrivé ; il a trouvé la pierre philosophale de l'air, la direction des ballons ! Je crois à la réussite. La première expérience sera probablement faite à Bade, si la souscription réussit. L'idée de Nadar est fort ingénieuse ; il est à désirer que l'académie des sciences ne s'en mêle pas. Si l'expérience arrive, le public sera composé de l'Europe, & cela me donne l'espoir de vous retrouver ici avec l'univers badois ». C'est cette anecdote qui permet de confirmer l'année. En effet, le Moniteur de la Mode mentionne l'inauguration de ce ballon monstrueux, d'une taille jamais atteinte, en septembre 1863 aux grandes courses de Bade (voir 1er numéro de septembre, p.245). Magnifique lettre, pleines d'informations intéressantes. [206]
