‎Souvenirs sur la guerre des Boers. — A l’instar d’autres pays comme l’Allemagne et l’Italie, des volontaires français s’engagent du côté des Républiques Boers. Ils sont 500, commandés par le comte de Villebois-Mareuil, ancien officier qui devient le chef d’état-major de Piet Joubert, l’un des plus importants officiers du Transvaal, qui fait rapidement de lui un général et le commandant des volontaires étrangers. D’ailleurs, une partie des Français déjà présents sur place, travaillant dans les mines, rejoint cette troupe. Georges de Villebois-Mareuil est toutefois tué à Boshof le 5 avril 1900 et n’assiste pas à la fin de la guerre. — "Les nouveaux succès remportés cette semaine par les Boers ramènent l'attention sur la guerre prodigieuse qui se poursuit au Transvaal. Justement, le “Carnet de campagne” du colonel de Villebois-Mareuil vient de paraître en volume... C'était l'instant de le relire. Quand ses feuillets parurent au jour le jour dans la “Liberté”, ils ne laissèrent pas d'exciter un assez vif étonnement. Le public, qui les suivait avec avidité s'attendait à y trouver une apologie sans réserve des admirables fermiers de Krûger, une sorte d'hymne enthousiaste en leur honneur. Il fut surpris de voir percer, à travers les lignes de ce journal, un peu de mauvaise humeur, de dépit, l'impression d'une impatience et d'un découragement mal dissimulé. Le colonel de Villebois-Mareuil, parti, plein de confiance et d'entrain, se trouvait, quand il mourut frappé par une balle anglaise, dans des dispositions différentes..."
