‎On Love, A Selection of Works of Hugh, Adam, Achard, Richard, and Godfrey of St Victor.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2011 Hardcover, 391 p., 1 colour ill., 152 x 229 mm, Languages: English Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503534596.‎

‎The version of the Rule of St Augustine used at the Abbey of St Victor began with the command to love God above all things and one?s neighbor as oneself. Not surprisingly, then, love was a pervasive theme in the writings produced there, many of which are introduced and translated here : (1) five lyrical essays by Hugh of St Victor (d. 1141): ThePraise of Charity; The Betrothal Gift of the Soul; In Praise of the Spouse; On the Substance of Love; What Truly Should Be Loved ?; (2) On the Four Degrees of Violent Love, by Richard of St Victor (d. 1173), which traces the likenesses and differences between romantic love and the love of God; (3) Achard of St Victor (d. 1170), Sermon 5 and two of Adam of St Victor?s sequences are examples of how these authors wove love into their writings ; (4) excerpts from the Microcosmus by Godfrey of St Victor (d. ca. 1195), summarize the central place of love in his humanistic theological anthropology.‎

‎Book Collections as Archaeological Sites. A Study of Interconnectedness and Meaning in the Historical Library of the Canonesses Regular of Soeterbeeck‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 716 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:15 b/w, 267 col., 3 tables b/w., Language: English. FINE ISBN 9782503604589.‎

‎Summary In 1997 the canonesses regular of Soeterbeeck moved from their convent in Deursen (the Netherlands) to a nursing home in Nuland. They left behind an old library of considerable size and historical significance that is now the core of the Soeterbeeck Collection at Nijmegen University Library. It is a suitable starting point for telling the story of the historical library of a women's convent with roots in the Modern Devotion, from the community's humble beginnings in 1448 to the present day. This study describes the collective history of all manuscripts and early printed books that are known to have been in communal or personal ownership at Soeterbeeck. It investigates the books' production and delves into their traces of use. Many of these are connected to each other, usually because they were left by the same person or had the same purpose. Such units transcend the level of individual volumes and reveal what might be called the stratification of the historical library as a whole. They can be interpreted in the context of the sisters' personal lives and the convent's communal history. This approach provides insight in the multiplicity of meanings that the books had for their users. For the first time, theoretical principles of modern archaeology are used to map a historical library as an archaeological site. A scholarly catalogue of the Soeterbeeck Collection that documents its traces of use is also included. Stunning illustrations visually lay bare the books' eventful lives. ‎, Brepols, 2026 Paperback, Pages: 234, Size:156 x 234 mm, Languages: English, Latin. ISBN 9782503623788.‎

‎Summary Richard of Saint Victor (d. 1173) is widely recognized for his commentaries on the spiritual senses of Scripture and for his theological contributions to Trinitarian doctrine, the Christian life, and contemplation. This study highlights two additional and often overlooked dimensions of his thought: his sustained reflections on the art of biblical interpretation, both literal and spiritual, and his detailed interpretations of the Mosaic Tabernacle in the desert and its contents. It presents improved Latin texts, together with English translations, of Richard's Literal Explanation of the Tabernacle and his Allegories on the same subject. The result is a fresh appreciation of Richard's interest in the literal meaning of the Old Testament's sacred architecture, and of his theory and practice of biblical interpretation. ‎Religious Practices and Everyday Life in the Long Fifteenth Century (1350-1570). Interpreting Changes and Changes of Interpretation‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 418 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:25 b/w, 2 tables b/w., 2 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503593555.‎

‎Summary The essays in this book bring to light and analyse the continuities and shifts in daily religious practices across Europe ? from Portugal to Hungary and from Italy to the British Isles ? in the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. While some of these changes, such as the increasing use of rosaries and the resort to Ars Moriendi, were the consequence of the rise of a more personal and interiorized faith, other changes had different causes. These included the spreading of the Reformation over Europe, the expulsion or compulsory conversion of the Jews in the Iberian Peninsula, and the conquest of large portions of eastern Christianity by the Turks ? all of which forced people, who suddenly found that they had become religious minorities, to adopt new ways of living and new strategies for expressing their religiosity. By recovering and analysing the cultural dynamics and connections between religious power, knowledge, culture, and practices, this collection reconsiders and enriches our understanding of one of the most critical phases of Europe's cultural history. At the same time, it challenges existing narratives of the development of (early) modern identities that still, all too often, dominate the self-understanding of contemporary European society. ‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 442 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: French. ISBN 9782503593746.‎

‎Summary Achard de Saint-Victor (1171) est un repr sentant moins connu de l' cole de Saint-Victor, l ve d'Hugues, chanoine r gulier, ma tre, abb de Saint-Victor Paris (1155-1161), v que d'Avranches (1161-1171).

‎Summary In this volume, the research of J zef Dobosz, one of Poland's leading historians of the Middle Ages, is made accessible in English for the first time. It brings together nineteen studies focused on the role of the Church, the Cistercian Order, and other religious institutions in the history of the Piast realm from which Poland emerged. The introduction offers a broad outline of the first two centuries of the rule of the Piast dynasty after the Baptism of Poland in 966 until the fragmentation of the Piast patrimony during the twelfth century. The subsequent essays examine the circumstances of the foundation of Poland's leading Cistercian monasteries in Sulej w, J?drzej w, W?chock, Owi?ska, and ?ekno. The author analyses the means of their establishment, evaluates the existing sources, and places these within the context of the Piast dynasty's economic, political, and social policies. The studies offer an in-depth analysis of the motivations of the leading dynasts, magnates, and prelates in supporting the mission of the Church in Poland and enabling further embedding of Christianity across all strata of the society. The author examines the oldest Polish documents related to Cistercian monasteries and canons regular (in particular foundation charters) including early medieval charter forgeries. The volume's key conclusions about the impact of Christianity on nascent Poland are based on a detailed examination of medieval charters, the role of scriptoria, identities of significant people of the Church, and the wider historical record.

‎Dominicans and Franciscans in Medieval Rome. History, Architecture, and Art‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 439 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:159 b/w, 10 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503578835.‎

‎Summary When Saint Dominic (c. 1174-1221) came to Rome to seek papal approval of the Order of Preachers, he founded two houses on the periphery of the city ? a nunnery at S. Sisto, in structures rebuilt by Pope Innocent III, and a priory next to the early Christian basilica of S. Sabina. The Dominicans modified and enlarged the existing buildings, according to their needs. Saint Francis of Assisi (c. 1182-1226) also came to consult the Pope, but he did not make any foundations in Rome. In 1229, Pope Gregory IX ordered the Benedictine monks of SS. Cosma e Damiano in Mica Aurea to cede to the Franciscans their hospice of S. Biagio in Trastevere, where Saint Francis had stayed. The friars built the church and friary of S. Francesco a Ripa there. Later, Gregory IX took over the Benedictine monastery itself, where he established the Franciscan nunnery of S. Cosimato in 1234. Moving into the more densely inhabited parts of the city, the Friars Minor built a new friary and church at S. Maria in Aracoeli on the Capitoline Hill from c. 1248-1252 onwards. The Dominicans, in 1266, acquired a convent near the Pantheon, where they constructed the Gothic church of S. Maria sopra Minerva. In 1285, the Colonna family established a Franciscan nunnery at S. Silvestro in Capite. In the context of the origin and evolution of the two Mendicant Orders, this book traces the history of these thirteenth-century Dominican and Franciscan foundations, focussing on their location in Rome, the history of each site, their architecture, and the medieval works of art connected with them. Popes and cardinals, members of important families, and Franciscan Tertiaries contributed generously to their construction and decoration. The book ends with Saint Catherine of Siena, who lived near S. Maria sopra Minerva, where she was buried. ‎Hoghe minne es deen vor dander. Essays on the Christian Mystical Tradition in Honour of Rob Faesen SJ‎

‎, Brepols, 2026 Paperback, Pages: 535, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:7 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503601755.‎

‎Summary This volume brings together contributions by colleagues, friends, and (former) students of Rob Faesen SJ on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Rob Faesen was the founder and director for more than twenty years of the Institute for the Study of Spirituality at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, KU Leuven, as well as lecturer at the Ruusbroec Institute, Faculty of Arts, University of Antwerp, and holder of the Francis Xavier Chair at the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology, Tilburg University. In view of the dedicatee's research interests, this volume of essays focuses on the history of Christian mysticism with three central foci. The first part of the volume is devoted to the medieval mystical tradition, which lies at the heart of Rob Faesen's research. The second part focuses on the development of mysticism and spirituality in the Franciscan Order, the Devotio Moderna, and the Society of Jesus. The final section of the volume turns to the relations between mystical theology and the liturgy, art, and contemporary thought. The volume thus addresses themes and questions that have been of great interest to Rob Faesen both professionally and personally. ‎Women's History in the Age of Reformation. Johannes Meyer's Chronicle of the Dominican Observance‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, approx. x + 306 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:2 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9780888443083.‎

‎Summary In his work The Book of the Reformation of the Order of Preachers, the Dominican friar Johannes Meyer (1422-1485) drew on letters, treatises, and other written records, as well as interviews, oral accounts, and his own personal experience, to record the blossoming of the Observant reform movement. The result is this sprawling, eclectic, yet curiously intimate account of the men - but mostly of the women - who devoted their lives to revitalizing the Dominican order in southern Germany. With his reliance on their accounts and archives and respect for their intellectual abilities and spiritual resolve, Meyer's treatment of medieval Dominican women provides a model from which today's historians stand to learn. The introduction contextualizes Meyer's celebratory work within a more objective historical background; it is followed by a full translation, making this remarkable history available to English-speaking readers for the first time.‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, xvi + 300 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:23 col., Language: English. ISBN 9780888448361.‎

‎Summary This volume offers a substantial and versatile contribution to the history and culture of the late-medieval Carthusians in England. The nine essays presented here focus primarily on the double charterhouses built on the outskirts of London, at Smithfield and Sheen. Syon Abbey, the Bridgettine house which stood a short distance from Sheen, and was founded at the same time, is also drawn into the conversation because of its sympathetic and practical links to the Carthusians. Particular attention is paid to the London Charterhouse. This institution is revaluated here as an engineered and ornamented structure, a sanctuary nourished by books and texts, a beacon of religion, a theatre of devotion and political manoeuvres and, in the wake of its dissolution, both a dwelling-place for affluent citizenry and a lieu de m moire for the English Carthusians in exile. ‎Within Walls, Experience of Enclosure in Christian Female Spiritualities (From Late Antiquity to Early Modern Period)‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Hardback, 311 Pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, 15 col., Language: English. *new ISBN 9782503599342.‎

‎What different mechanisms did women religious use to interpret the communal and individual aspects of enclosure throughout history? To what extent was enclosure a pivotal feature of Christian spiritual, social and cultural life? How did social and political contexts shape the strategies of nuns and beatas in accepting or rejecting strict enclosure? Within Walls explores the diverse experiences of enclosure within female Christian spiritualities, presenting it as a crucial concept for a deep understanding of the history of women religious. The volume primarily aims to show the different ways in which women religious lived, negotiated and redefined enclosure in its material and symbolic dimensions. Covering the period from the New Testament era to the late sixteenth century, and spanning regions from the Holy Land and Egypt to Western Europe and colonial Mexico, it explores the evolving meanings and uses of the confined life as experienced and shaped by women religious in Christianity. The case studies presented in this volume?from the strategies of seclusion of early Christian anchoresses to the plethora of voices of Mediaeval and Early Modern female communities and the authority wielded by individual nuns, pilgrims, prioresses, reformers and mystics?argue that there was by no means a single form of enclosure in female Christian religious life. Instead, inspired by Philip Sheldrake?s interpretation of sacred spaces as polyphonic, this volume stresses the multivocality and multilocality of the term. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates microhistory, human geography, the cultural analysis of materiality, literary studies, feminist and gender studies, indigenous methodologies, art studies, postcolonial anthropology and the philosophy of religion and spirituality, Within Walls provides fresh perspectives on the most intricate dimension of religious life in history. ‎Sacred and the Secular in Renaissance Florence. Vallombrosan Exorcisms and the Rise of Observant Mendicancy‎

‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, Pages: 434, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503585499.‎

‎Summary Seeking to heal people possessed by demons, stave off Lorenzo de' Medici's predations, and compete with the meteoric rise of Observant Mendicants - Franciscans and Dominicans - monks known as Vallombrosans performed multiple exorcisms in Florence and its countryside in the latter half of the fifteenth century. The accounts they wrote to publicize their efforts present an unusually lively survey of a little-studied sea change in late medieval religious life. In a religious landscape populated by Mendicant charlatans dressed as John the Baptist, concupiscent clerics, and pompous prelates, the Vallombrosans positioned themselves as committed to the decorous healing of Florentine peasants and nobles while weighing in on contemporary politics and claiming insight into Medici-related affairs such as the recent Pazzi Conspiracy. Yet traditional religious orders like the Vallombrosans and the Benedictines could not match the publicity, popularity, and secular political support garnered by Observant Mendicants in urban areas, and the latter's ascendance left religion at the end of the fifteenth century looking very different from what it had at its beginning. By the century's end, Observants predominated in influence, prestige, and patronage in cities across all of Europe. Sanctioning economic gain, addressing worldly moral dilemmas, and moving away from the older monastic focus on the dead and the afterlife, they shifted their focus to contemporary concerns. As over a traditional focus on communal life and monastic healing, Observants inaugurated individualistic forms of piety and fostered alternative forms of lay sociability and healing in the form of confraternities and urban hospitals. This rich study of the forces which impelled a group of Florentine monks to perform exorcisms opens a kaleidoscopic window onto religious practice, political and religious entanglements, and a decisive shift in religious and political life that transformed the fifteenth century.
