‎GENERAL ORDERS CIVIL WAR. TOWNSEND ED. E. D.‎

‎General Orders No. 282‎

‎Washington DC: War Department 1864 November 14. 16mo. Handbill. Very good. Four-punched at left edge not affecting text. Townsend announces the resignation of Major General George B. McClellan on November 8 -- though not stated just after losing the presidential race to Lincoln -- and the appointment of Philip H. Sheridan as Major General: "That for the personal gallantry military skill and just confidence in the courage and patriotism of his troops. on the 19th day of October at Cedar Run whereby. his routed army was reorganized a great national disaster averted and a brilliant victory achieved over the rebels for the third time in pitched battle within thirty days." The acceptance of McClellan's resignation without comment or praise over a job well done speaks volumes about the much-disliked commander's lackluster performance. unknown‎

‎GENERAL ORDERS CIVIL WAR. TOWNSEND ED. E. D.‎

‎General Orders No. 211‎

‎Washington DC: War Department 1864 June 15. 12mo. Handbill. Near fine. Lightly soiled and a tad edgeworn with two file holes at left not affecting text. Townsend announces a "Public Resolution -- No. 34" being "A Resolution tendering the thanks of Congress to Lieutenant Joseph Bailey of the 4th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers. for distinguished services in the recent campaign on the Red river by which the gunboat flotilla under Rear Admiral David D. Porter was rescued from imminent peril." Bailey 1825-67 was one of only 15 men voted the "Thanks of Congress" -- and the only one who wasn't a corps or division commander. General Nathaniel Banks' Red River Campaign was saved from a disastrous loss of life by this Wisconsin engineer who devised a plan to raise the level of a river at Alexandria by constructing a winged dam. For ten days about 10000 soldiers slaved away to build it. The river did indeed raise and Admiral Porter's stranded fleet of ten gunboats floated safely past. Remnants of "Bailey's Dam" can still be seen today. An intriguing relic of this famed event. unknown‎

‎Spiritual Formation and Mystical Symbolism. A Selection of Works of Hugh and Richard of St Victor, and of Thomas Gallus‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 625 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503553115.‎

‎Summary Biblical interpretation, writings on the contemplative/mystical life and a continuing deep reflection on the nature and meaning of symbols come together in powerful ways in Victorine writers, particularly Hugh and Richard, as well as the lesser-known writer Thomas Gallus (Thomas of Vercelli), a Victorine canon who became the abbot of a house of regular canons in Vercelli, Italy. This volume contains: (1) Hugh's On the Ark of Noah and A Short Treatise on the Form of the Ark, treatises that unfold Hugh's teaching on stages and fruition of the mystical quest in relation to a complex drawing that incorporates a figure of Christ seated in majesty, embracing a map of the world on which is superimposed a diagram of Noah's Ark, representing the 12 stages of the contemplative quest; (2) Richard's On the Ark of Moses, a work that uses the symbolic (allegorical and tropological) interpretation of the Ark of the Covenant and the figures of the Cherubim that accompany the Ark in the Jerusalem Temple to convey Richard's vivid and compelling teaching on the varieties of contemplative experience as he understood them in twelfth-century Paris; and (3) Thomas Gallus' Commentary on the Song of Songs, which offers a window into a formative period of transition in the western Christian spiritual tradition, with Gallus's commentary on the Song of Songs giving voice to a more ?affective? (versus ?speculative?) understanding of the mystical quest and experience, drawing upon and extending earlier Victorine explorations of the interrelationship of love and knowing in the experience of contemplation. For those interested in the dynamics of the spiritual quest and symbolic understanding in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, as well as insights that can inform the modern quest for knowledge and love of God, these are essential works for any library.‎

‎Life and Death at a Nubian Monastery. The Collected Funerary Epigraphy from Ghazali‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 340 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:276 b/w, 78 col., 20 tables b/w., 1 tables col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503600642.‎

‎Summary The Christian monastery of Ghazali, located in Wadi Abu Dom, in northern Sudan, is one of the most famous archaeological sites within the country. Built by the Makurians in the seventh century AD, it flourished until its abandonment in the thirteenth century, and its picturesque ruins became a popular tourist attraction in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During the period of the monastery's activity, it was an important religious centre, a place where monks lived, worshipped, died, and left important information about their lives buried in the archaeological record. This volume offers a catalogue and in-depth analysis of over two hundred funerary epigraphy monuments, inscribed in Greek and Coptic, onto stone stelae and terracotta plaques, that have been uncovered at Ghazali and that bear an important witness to life and death at the site. The meticulous epigraphic and philological work presented here is combined with a detailed discussion of the ensemble, including their archaeological context, material aspects, language use, and formulary. The analysis of onomastic practices and the monastic hierarchy supplements the picture and brings to the fore both individual persons and the community responsible for the production of these texts. ‎The version of the Rule of St Augustine used at the Abbey of St Victor began with the command to love God above all things and one?s neighbor as oneself. Not surprisingly, then, love was a pervasive theme in the writings produced there, many of which are introduced and translated here : (1) five lyrical essays by Hugh of St Victor (d. 1141): ThePraise of Charity; The Betrothal Gift of the Soul; In Praise of the Spouse; On the Substance of Love; What Truly Should Be Loved ?; (2) On the Four Degrees of Violent Love, by Richard of St Victor (d. 1173), which traces the likenesses and differences between romantic love and the love of God; (3) Achard of St Victor (d. 1170), Sermon 5 and two of Adam of St Victor?s sequences are examples of how these authors wove love into their writings ; (4) excerpts from the Microcosmus by Godfrey of St Victor (d. ca. 1195), summarize the central place of love in his humanistic theological anthropology.‎

‎Book Collections as Archaeological Sites. A Study of Interconnectedness and Meaning in the Historical Library of the Canonesses Regular of Soeterbeeck‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 716 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:15 b/w, 267 col., 3 tables b/w., Language: English. FINE ISBN 9782503604589.‎

‎Summary In 1997 the canonesses regular of Soeterbeeck moved from their convent in Deursen (the Netherlands) to a nursing home in Nuland. They left behind an old library of considerable size and historical significance that is now the core of the Soeterbeeck Collection at Nijmegen University Library. It is a suitable starting point for telling the story of the historical library of a women's convent with roots in the Modern Devotion, from the community's humble beginnings in 1448 to the present day. This study describes the collective history of all manuscripts and early printed books that are known to have been in communal or personal ownership at Soeterbeeck. It investigates the books' production and delves into their traces of use. Many of these are connected to each other, usually because they were left by the same person or had the same purpose. Such units transcend the level of individual volumes and reveal what might be called the stratification of the historical library as a whole. They can be interpreted in the context of the sisters' personal lives and the convent's communal history. This approach provides insight in the multiplicity of meanings that the books had for their users. For the first time, theoretical principles of modern archaeology are used to map a historical library as an archaeological site. A scholarly catalogue of the Soeterbeeck Collection that documents its traces of use is also included. Stunning illustrations visually lay bare the books' eventful lives. ‎Religious Practices and Everyday Life in the Long Fifteenth Century (1350-1570). Interpreting Changes and Changes of Interpretation‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 418 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:25 b/w, 2 tables b/w., 2 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503593555.‎

‎Summary The essays in this book bring to light and analyse the continuities and shifts in daily religious practices across Europe ? from Portugal to Hungary and from Italy to the British Isles ? in the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. While some of these changes, such as the increasing use of rosaries and the resort to Ars Moriendi, were the consequence of the rise of a more personal and interiorized faith, other changes had different causes. These included the spreading of the Reformation over Europe, the expulsion or compulsory conversion of the Jews in the Iberian Peninsula, and the conquest of large portions of eastern Christianity by the Turks ? all of which forced people, who suddenly found that they had become religious minorities, to adopt new ways of living and new strategies for expressing their religiosity. By recovering and analysing the cultural dynamics and connections between religious power, knowledge, culture, and practices, this collection reconsiders and enriches our understanding of one of the most critical phases of Europe's cultural history. At the same time, it challenges existing narratives of the development of (early) modern identities that still, all too often, dominate the self-understanding of contemporary European society. ‎Church and Cistercians in Medieval Poland. Foundations, Documents, People‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 347 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:14 b/w, 5 tables b/w., 6 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503598024.‎

‎Summary In this volume, the research of J zef Dobosz, one of Poland's leading historians of the Middle Ages, is made accessible in English for the first time. It brings together nineteen studies focused on the role of the Church, the Cistercian Order, and other religious institutions in the history of the Piast realm from which Poland emerged. The introduction offers a broad outline of the first two centuries of the rule of the Piast dynasty after the Baptism of Poland in 966 until the fragmentation of the Piast patrimony during the twelfth century. The subsequent essays examine the circumstances of the foundation of Poland's leading Cistercian monasteries in Sulej w, J?drzej w, W?chock, Owi?ska, and ?ekno. The author analyses the means of their establishment, evaluates the existing sources, and places these within the context of the Piast dynasty's economic, political, and social policies. The studies offer an in-depth analysis of the motivations of the leading dynasts, magnates, and prelates in supporting the mission of the Church in Poland and enabling further embedding of Christianity across all strata of the society. The author examines the oldest Polish documents related to Cistercian monasteries and canons regular (in particular foundation charters) including early medieval charter forgeries. The volume's key conclusions about the impact of Christianity on nascent Poland are based on a detailed examination of medieval charters, the role of scriptoria, identities of significant people of the Church, and the wider historical record.

‎Summary When Saint Dominic (c. 1174-1221) came to Rome to seek papal approval of the Order of Preachers, he founded two houses on the periphery of the city ? a nunnery at S. Sisto, in structures rebuilt by Pope Innocent III, and a priory next to the early Christian basilica of S. Sabina. The Dominicans modified and enlarged the existing buildings, according to their needs. Saint Francis of Assisi (c. 1182-1226) also came to consult the Pope, but he did not make any foundations in Rome. In 1229, Pope Gregory IX ordered the Benedictine monks of SS. Cosma e Damiano in Mica Aurea to cede to the Franciscans their hospice of S. Biagio in Trastevere, where Saint Francis had stayed. The friars built the church and friary of S. Francesco a Ripa there. Later, Gregory IX took over the Benedictine monastery itself, where he established the Franciscan nunnery of S. Cosimato in 1234. Moving into the more densely inhabited parts of the city, the Friars Minor built a new friary and church at S. Maria in Aracoeli on the Capitoline Hill from c. 1248-1252 onwards. The Dominicans, in 1266, acquired a convent near the Pantheon, where they constructed the Gothic church of S. Maria sopra Minerva. In 1285, the Colonna family established a Franciscan nunnery at S. Silvestro in Capite. In the context of the origin and evolution of the two Mendicant Orders, this book traces the history of these thirteenth-century Dominican and Franciscan foundations, focussing on their location in Rome, the history of each site, their architecture, and the medieval works of art connected with them. Popes and cardinals, members of important families, and Franciscan Tertiaries contributed generously to their construction and decoration. The book ends with Saint Catherine of Siena, who lived near S. Maria sopra Minerva, where she was buried.

‎The Capital's Charterhouses and the Record of English Carthusianism‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, xvi + 300 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:23 col., Language: English. ISBN 9780888448361.‎

‎Summary This volume offers a substantial and versatile contribution to the history and culture of the late-medieval Carthusians in England. The nine essays presented here focus primarily on the double charterhouses built on the outskirts of London, at Smithfield and Sheen. Syon Abbey, the Bridgettine house which stood a short distance from Sheen, and was founded at the same time, is also drawn into the conversation because of its sympathetic and practical links to the Carthusians. Particular attention is paid to the London Charterhouse. This institution is revaluated here as an engineered and ornamented structure, a sanctuary nourished by books and texts, a beacon of religion, a theatre of devotion and political manoeuvres and, in the wake of its dissolution, both a dwelling-place for affluent citizenry and a lieu de m moire for the English Carthusians in exile.
