Dupont de Nemours commente article par article le "Pacte de famille", alliance franco-espagnole conclue en 1733 et renouvelée en 1761. En 1790, l'Espagne invoqua ce traité pour faire appel au roi de France après un incident survenu avec les troupes britanniques dans le Pacifique. "Louis XVI et ses ministres furent enclins à envoyer l'aide demandée, même au risque de la guerre; mais l'Assemblée nationale, confrontée pour la première fois à des questions diplomatiques, rejeta la demande espagnole. Un régime national et représentatif ne reconnaissait pas les liens familiaux entre les maisons régnantes comme une base adéquate pour des accords internationaux, et encore moins pour des actions militaires" (W. Doyle, 'The Oxford History of the French Revolution', p. 164-165). Dupont de Nemours révéla, à cette occasion, ses exceptionnels talents en matière de géopolitique et de relations internationales. Edition originale de cet ouvrage, réunion de trois essais, dont "De l'état actuel des partis en France..." qui obtint un retentissement considérable dans les milieux libéraux, précédés d'une importante introduction (111 p.) datée de novembre 1841. "Ouvrage déterminant pour l'histoire politique du régime, car expliquant la rupture opérée chez les doctrinaires après l'arrivée de Guizot au pouvoir" (B. Yvert, 'Politique libérale', n°79). Fidèle à ses idéaux réformistes et libéraux, avec l'acuité et la pertinence visionnaire qui le caractérisait, Duvergier de Hauranne critique le nouveau ministère Guizot et la politique des doctrinaires, qu'il avait pourtant soutenus à ses débuts, égarés dans des querelles de personnes et de "prééminence". De dures attaques s'adressent au roi Louis Philippe, à sa dérive monarchique et la trahison des idéaux libéraux des débuts de son règne. L'auteur dresse un tableau de "l'état des partis en France" et propose des réformes. Quant à la diplomatie française, il critique ses errements et sa faiblesse coupable que ce soit sur la question d'Orient ou dans ses rapports avec ses voisins de Grande-Bretagne ou d'Allemagne. Très bon exemplaire, très frais, entièrement non coupé, tel que paru.

The Torch of the Ottoman Empire presents the life and work of a truly remarkable person, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson, and through him, the Ottoman Empire of the late eighteenth century. In revolutionary Paris d'Ohsson published in 1789 what is maybe the best description of the social history of the Ottoman Empire, Tableau General de I'Empire Othoman. D'Ohsson's book was extravagantly illustrated with the help of the best artists in Constantinople working for Abdulhamid I and Selim III. The most renowned artists of pre-revolutionary France then executed the gravures in Paris. Some motifs, reproduced also in this present book, still remain quite unique. Through these engravings, an intimate reality is revealed to us, bringing us very close to a universe long since vanished. A very heavy volume. The Torch of the Empire presents the life and work of a truly remarkable person, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson, and through him, the Ottoman Empire of the late eighteenth century. Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson was a dragoman, an interpreter, at the Swedish Legation in Constantinople from around 1760. Although d'Ohsson was a Sultan's subject of French-Armenian origin, Sweden's King Gustav III made him a Swedish nobleman and trusted him to be his ambassador to the Sublime Porte. Mouradgea d'Ohsson thus performed an extraordinary journey, not only through the social classes of Ottoman society, but between civilizations. With outstanding scholars this book escorts us on a journey through the centuries to meet d'Ohsson and share his perspective on the Ottoman Empire and on European diplomacy of his time.
