Women, war and work in the Ottoman Empire: Society for the employment of Ottoman Muslim women, (1916-1923).
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 582 p. World War I deeply altered the lives of Muslim Ottoman women. The Ottoman Army consisted only of Muslim men and war caused the death of one and a half million Muslim Ottoman men. The heavy losses of the Ottoman army meant that every day more and more dependants lost their breadwinners. When the breadwinner had gone to war, was wounded or died at the front; the wives, daughters, sisters and mothers they had left behind were faced with two options: to find work and make a living, or to starve to death. On 14 August 1916, the Committee of Union and Progress (Ittihâd ve Terakkî Cemiyeti), the ruling party of the Ottoman Empire, established a new society under the leadership of one of its leading figures: Vice-Commander and Minister of War, Enver Pasa. The Society for the Employment of Ottoman Muslim Women (Kadinlari Çalistirma Cemiyet-i Islâmiyesi) was a Unionist organization created to find employment for Muslim Ottoman women who were in urgent economic need. Within a matter of months, it received more than 14,000 applications and was soon employing 8,194 destitute Ottoman women in its braches and in the related state and military institutions. In time, it would offer jobs to an aggregate number of 20,000 women workers, and became the leading employer of Muslim Ottoman women in the Ottoman Empire. This comprehensive work constitutes both a case study of Muslim Ottoman women during World War I, and a detailed analysis of the foundation, organization and activities of the Society for the Employment of Ottoman Muslim Women, created to find employment for them.

The "Union of Socialists-Revolutionaries Maximalists was a political party in the Russian Empire, a radical wing expelled from the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in 1906. The Union united agrarian terrorists, the 'Moscow Opposition' and other radical dissidents from the PSR in an independent party. The Maximalists officially split off from the PSR at its Second Congress in Imatra in 1906. Maximalists played a role in both the Revolution of 1905 and the Revolution of 1917. Many former SR Maximalists eventually joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolshevik)
.Maximalists were so called because they demanded the full implementation of the 'maximum programme' in the expected revolution: full socialisation of the land, factories and all other means of production. The orthodox Socialist-Revolutionaries wanted to start with land reform but defer socialisation of other means of production. The Maximalists also rejected the PSR's version of a 'two-stage' revolution, a theory associated with V.M. Chernov. According to Chernov, the coming revolution in Russia would not be purely 'bourgeois-democratic' as the Social-Democrats claimed, but would include social and economic as well as political reforms. It would be a 'popular-democratic' revolution, and would transition into a full-blown 'labour-socialist' revolution later on. The Maximalists rejected this as Social-Democratic 'attentism' and argued that the coming Russian revolution would not be able to stop half-way; it was the two-stage theory, not Maximalism, that was unrealistic if it thought the toiling masses, once liberated, would content themselves with a bourgeois republic and gradual reforms." Complessa opera in prosa, "poema sociale altamente umanitario" e di ampio respiro ideale, opera iniziata nel 1898 e lasciata incompiuta dallo ZAMBONI, mazziniano (perciò poi vittima dell'ostracismo monarchico), capitano del Battaglione universitario romano, difese la Repubblica romana del 1849, della quale scrisse i Ricordi, pubblicati postumi nel 1926 (e offerti in questo catalogo!); autore di drammi e poemi, professore di letteratura italiana e studioso di Dante, insegnò all'Accademia di Vienna.. Appassionato viaggiatore in Europa, Asia e Africa. S'interessò anche all'ipnotismo e allo spiritismo. MARTINUZZI, (Albona d'Istria 1844-1925), militante socialista, scrittrice e poetessa, autrice di manuali scolastici e di testi pedagogici, giornalista, maestra elementare. Censito in 8 bibl. it.
