Number 403 of the edition of 1000 signed by Paul Strand.In the cloth and board chemise A touch of toning to the spine of the chemise otherwise the pamphlet and photogravures are fine. The printed slipcase has light shelfwear on the bottom edge a couple of spots otherwise near fine. In 1926 Paul Strand traveled to New Mexico to make portraits and in the early 1930s he traveled to Mexico to photograph its architecture landscape folk art and people. These trips occurred in a transitional period for Strand. He was moving away from his more austere earlier work and was using portraiture to infuse a new humanism into photography. The result of his Mexican trip was the seminal 1940 portfolio Photographs of Mexico containing twenty photogravures. That edition published by Virginia Stevens with gravures pulled at the now defunct New York Photogravure and Color Company was issued in a limited edition of 250 copies. A new edition under the title The Mexican Portfolio was published twenty-six years later by the Da Capo Press with gravures pulled at the Andersen Lamb Company by Albert DeLong under Strand�s direct supervision. Strand said of this version which used the same steel gravure plates as the original: "they have been able to get even more out of these twenty beautiful plates in printing the second edition." New York: Da Capo Press 1967. Second Edition Limited to 1000 numbered copies signed by Strand. A seminal work by a legendary figure in 20th century American photography. Based on photographs taken by the author on his travels through Mexico in 1932-33 the striking photogravures depict architecture landscape the indigenous people and religious folk sculpture. Strand's work first made its appearance as Photographs of Mexico in a limited edition of 250 copies in 1940 with the printing of the steel-faced gravure plates by master platemaker Otto Wackernagel being supervised by Strand himself and executed by Charles Furth and the Photogravure and Color Company. This second edition utilized the original Wackernagel plates but they were now printed by Albert Delong at the Andersen Lamb Company of Brooklyn. Strand was even more pleased with this version remarking: “they have been able to get even more out of these twenty beautiful plates in printing the second edition.this work I think is superlative.Delong.has made these plates sing.” "The images…are a celebration of the subjects’ pride dignity and endurance and are a clear testament to Strand’s belief that the photogravure process is capable of yielding the finest results achievable in photographic printmaking." A tale affermazione divenuta il manifesto della fotografia modernista il fotografo Paul Strand rimase sempre fedele soprattutto nella produzione di libri che illustravano popoli e Paesi cui si dedicò dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. Uno dei più memorabili è ''Tir a' Mhurain: Outer Hebrides'' nome gaelico per l'isola di South Uist ovvero the Land of Bent Grass. Il volume le cui bellissime fotografie in bianco e nero furono scattate nell'isola che dà il titolo al libro oltre che a Benbecula ed Eriskay ha un risvolto politico. Strand fotografo marxista controllato dall'FBI sbarcò sull'isola proprio mentre si andavano conducendo sondaggi segreti per l'utilizzo del luogo come base missilistica americana. Strand indignato concepì in parte Tir a' Mhurain come protesta contro il militarismo aggressivo statunitense. Il fotografo inoltre insistette per stampare il libro a Leipzig Germania dell'Est adducendo motivi tecnici più che politici ovvero l'esistenza di uno speciale processo di stampa disponibile unicamente dall'altra parte della cortina di ferro. Il libro venne bandito negli USA a meno che le copie importate recassero il timbro ''stampato in Germania occupata dall'URSS''. Clausola che Strand ovviamente non avrebbe mai accettato.
