A Brest Litovsk, agli inizi del 1918, la delegazione della Repubblica sovietica e quelle degli Imperi centrali discutono le condizioni per firmare la pace. L'incertezza dello scenario internazionale sembra autorizzare equamente timori e speranze. Se da parte tedesca si continuano a nutrire illusioni di agevoli conquiste territoriali, da parte sovietica si guarda con estremo interesse alle prospettive rivoluzionarie apertesi sia in Germania che in Austria: l'ipotesi di una rivoluzione socialista nel cuore dell'Europa sembra a portata di mano e questo spiega l'orientamento di Trockij che, alla guida della delegazione sovietica, è convinto che ci siano le condizioni per respingere i diktat germanici. Le cose, com'è noto, andranno altrimenti, ma solo molti anni dopo Roman Rosdolsky fornirà, grazie a rigorose ricerche d'archivio, elementi inoppugnabili per la ricostruzione dei retroscena di quel cruciale snodo storico: la potente dirigenza socialdemocratica austriaca, mentre scagliava parole di fuoco contro la guerra, lavorava in realtà per impedire qualsiasi sbocco politico ai poderosi scioperi spontanei che squassavano il paese. Il volume curato da Antonio Moscato - che ripropone il saggio di Roman Rosdolsky - affronta un interrogativo classico della storiografia sulla Rivoluzione d'Ottobre. Tutt'altro che datato, però: il confronto tra l'anima socialdemocratica e quella rivoluzionaria della tradizione marxista è ancora estremamente attuale. Autori: Antonio Moscato.
