Dall'infanzia ferita da un dramma familiare a un'adolescenza ribelle, all'incontro con i comunisti e con Togliatti, si snodano la vita e la carriera di questo politico diverso. La sua è la vicenda di un uomo che ha voluto sfidare le rigidità di un mondo diviso in blocchi con la passione del rischio con cui affrontava le tempeste di mare nella sua Sardegna. Dopo il colpo di stato polacco, aveva tagliato i ponti con l'Urss in modo definitivo. Aveva osato progettare il comunismo nella democrazia, un'ipotesi intollerabile sia a Mosca sia a Washington. Aveva cercato di cambiare l'Italia con il compromesso storico, e forse ci sarebbe riuscito senza il rapimento e l'assassinio di Aldo Moro. Aveva dimostrato di avere la vista lunga indicando nella questione morale e nella degenerazione dei partiti "ridotti a macchine di potere e di clientela" il problema più drammatico dell'Italia. Se lo "strano comunista", come lo definiva la stampa Usa, non fosse morto troppo presto, forse anche la storia della sinistra e dell'Italia sarebbe stata diversa. Postfazione di Paolo Spriano.

L'autore immagina le pagine come una piccola cassetta degli attrezzi, una bussola per orientarsi nel mare in burrasca di questo terremotato presente, uno strumento per interrogarsi sul livello di deprivazione emotiva che la nostra società ha raggiunto. Sulle dimensioni del deserto interiore che ci circonda. Il genere dell'opera è un saggio di analisi politica e di controinformazione. Lo spazio e il tempo dell'azione sono incentrati all'attualità del nostro paese, ma si dilatano a livello temporale dalla Rivoluzione Francese, al Socialismo del 21° Secolo che caratterizza i paesi dell'ALBA e spazia dall'Europa all'America Latina con frequenti incursioni nel medioriente, nel mondo arabo e nelle altre zone calde di cui quotidianamente ci parla la cronaca geopolitica. I suoi capitoli rappresentano una foto di gruppo dissacrante e irriverente di una fetta consistente del nuovo potere italiano. Questo libro parla della sinistra e lo fa senza peli sulla lingua, ne narra i ripetuti tradimenti, la viltà, il sistematico opportunismo dei suoi dirigenti ed autoproclamati leader. Dunque la peculiarità di questo saggio è che la sinistra diviene al tempo stesso la protagonista e l'antagonista di se stessa. Lo stile è asciutto ma evocativo. Il tempo verbale al presente, con alcuni salti temporali nel passato prossimo e remoto, aiuta l'autore a raccontare gli eventi in modo lineare e con una struttura colloquiale, senza ricercatezze superflue. La narrazione è immediata e il linguaggio diretto e comunicativo.

The Russian writer Lydia Ginzburg (1902-90) is best known for her Notes from the Leningrad Blockade and for influential critical studies, such as On Psychological Prose, investigating the problem of literary character in French and Russian novels and memoirs. Yet she viewed her most vital work to be the extensive prose fragments, composed for the desk drawer, in which she analyzed herself and other members of the Russian intelligentsia through seven traumatic decades of Soviet history. In this book, the first full-length English-language study of the writer, Emily Van Buskirk presents Ginzburg as a figure of previously unrecognized innovation and importance in the literary landscape of the twentieth century. Based on a decade's work in Ginzburg's archives, the book discusses previously unknown manuscripts and uncovers a wealth of new information about the author's life, focusing on Ginzburg's quest for a new kind of writing adequate to her times. She writes of universal experiences--frustrated love, professional failures, remorse, aging--and explores the modern fragmentation of identity in the context of war, terror, and an oppressive state. Searching for a new concept of the self, and deeming the psychological novel (a beloved academic specialty) inadequate to express this concept, Ginzburg turned to fragmentary narratives that blur the lines between history, autobiography, and fiction. Making full use of the documentation that has recently become available, including Stalin's private library with his handwritten margin notes, the book provides many insights on Stalin, and also on western and Russian Marxist intellectual traditions. Overall, the book argues that Stalin's political thought is not primarily indebted to the Russian autocratic tradition, but belongs to a tradition of revolutionary patriotism that stretches back through revolutionary Marxism to Jacobin thought in the French Revolution. It makes interesting comparisons between Stalin, Lenin, Bukharin and Trotsky, and explains a great deal about the mindset of those brought up in the Stalinist era, and about the era's many key problems, including the industrial revolution from above, socialist cultural policy, Soviet treatment of nationalities, pre-war and Cold War foreign policy, and the purges.
