Ouvrage superbement ignoré aux Etats-Unis où on l'a jugé trop philosophique et trop sévère pour le socialisme. Kolakowski, en effet, analysait le marxisme comme une métaphysique, une pseudo-religion de salut camouflée en science positive..." (Michel Winock) — " Ce livre tente de faire une histoire du marxisme, c'est-à-dire l'histoire de la doctrine marxiste. Il ne s'agit pas d'une histoire des idées socialistes. Il ne s'agit pas non plus d'une histoire des partis politiques ou des mouvements qui ont adopté cette doctrine comme idéologie propre, selon des versions différentes. Le partage n'est assurément pas facile à accomplir dans le cas du marxisme, la connexion entre le travail des théoriciens et des idéologues d'une part, et les combats politiques d'autre part, est manifeste et étroite. J'entends, pour ma part, fournir les informations élémentaires et indispensables pour montrer le rapport entre le développement de la doctrine et ses fonctionnements comme idéologie politique. Il n'existe quasiment aucune question touchant l'interprétation du marxisme qui ne soit un objet de conflit. J'ai eu le souci d'évoquer les plus importants de ces débats. La majorité des marxistes de l'époque de la IIe Internationale a plutôt tenu Marx pour l'auteur d'une théorie économique déterminée ou d'une théorie de la société, qui d'après les uns, serait compatible avec divers points de vue métaphysiques ou épistémologiques, ou qui d'après les autres, fut parachevée par l'adjonction de fondements philosophiques provenant de Engels. De cette manière, le marxisme authentique représente un bloc théorique cohérent, composé de deux ou trois parties qui furent élaborées respectivement par deux auteurs. Nous connaissons tous l'arrière-fond politique de l'intérêt pour le marxisme : cette doctrine est considérée comme la tradition idéologique du communisme contemporain. Ce n'est pas seulement chez les gens qui se considèrent eux-mêmes comme marxistes mais encore chez leurs adversaires, qu'il est ordinaire de se poser la question : le communisme contemporain, dans son idéologie comme dans ses institutions, est-il bien l'héritage légitime de Marx ? A l'origine de mes développements, il y a la certitude que la question du communisme comme héritage de Marx est mal posée et qu'il ne vaut donc pas la peine de vouloir y répondre. Plus précisément, nous n'avons pas la possibilité de répondre à la question suivante : "Que dirait Marx s'il pouvait voir l'oeuvre de ceux qui se réclament de lui ?". Le marxisme ne peut apporter de solution particulière à des problèmes que Marx ne souleva pas lui-même et qui n'avaient pas lieu d'être posés de son temps. Si Marx avait vécu encore quatre-vingt-dix ans, il aurait été obligé de modifier ses analyses d'une manière que personne ne peut conjecturer." (L.K., 4e de couverture du tome 1)‎
