Japanese manuscript showing 87 hand-coloured flags with names in Dutch and Japanese for the countries and only in Dutch for most cities all except the first measuring ca. 3.5 x 5.5 cm. Contemporary binding in traditional Japanese style heavy paper wrappers without spine.
15 1 blank pp.Japanese manuscript showing brightly coloured flags from cities and countries all over the world mostly focussing on Europe and especially the Netherlands. It includes flags of Brazil Chile China England Japan Mexico Morocco Norway Poland Russia Spain Sweden Turkey the United States etc and often includes variant naval flags.The first page shows a large flag of the Netherlands twice the size of the rest with the coat of arms as used since 1815 combining the coat of arms of the House of Orange-Nassau and that of the former Dutch Republic. The flags in the manuscript all date from ca. 1827/37. The flag shown for the United States appears to be a misrepresentation of the design used in 1837-1848.With minor water stains throughout only faintly visible on most pages. Wrappers rubbed and with a small restoration near the spine. Despite these flaws still an attractive flag manuscript throwing light on many flags whose history remains obscure. unknown
