In the first of two tracts Observations on the effects of the corn laws> 1814 Malthus compared the advantages and disadvantages that might be expected to result from continuing the Corn Laws on the footing on which they then stood and from laying still greater restrictions on importation. His leanings were however obviously in favour of higher duties; and in this his second tract he strongly recommends the latter. One of his principal arguments is the increase which he alleges a fall in the value of corn would generate in the value of money and consequently in the pressure of taxation. This pamphlet provoked a private response from Horner against his conclusions later published in Malthus's memoirs and a public one from Ricardo in An essay on the influence of a low price of corn on the profits of stocks .> published the same year. First edition first impression. "In the first edition of his Essay on the Principle of Population 1798 Malthus confined himself to theory. Subsequently in 1799 Malthus traveled to Scandinavia in search of the necessary empirical evidence to support his theory. His journey took him from Hamburg in the south to Trondheim in the north and included parts of Sweden as well. During this trip from May through August Malthus kept a diary and it constitutes the major portion of this work. Not surprisingly the evidence for which Malthus was looking was found and incorporated into the later editions of his Essay. A diary often contains a considerable amount of trivia and this is no exception but it further contains the observations of an acute observer of economic life and as such is of interest to a far wider range of readers than just those concerned with the history of economic doctrine" Coolidge p. 962.
