During the investigation the charges were changed to the organisation of an illegal protest and symbolic direct actions against the state buildings, including the destruction of property. He did not admit his guilt. In November 2011 international human right organisations recognised Mikola a political prisoner. During his 5-year imprisonment he was transfered to several correctional facilities. He was released on August 22, 2015 by a Presidentital decree of pardon. At the moment Mikola is a student of European Humanities University (Vilnius), studying World politics and Economy, and a journalist of Belarusian social-political newspaper Novy Chas.‎

In jeweils vier Fall- und Langzeitstudien diskutieren ausgewiesene Spezialisten aus der Region und zwei deutsche Wissenschaftlerinnen Transformationsprozesse des Islams in Tatarstan, Aserbaidschan, Dagestan, Usbekistan und Tadschikistan. Einige Kapitel analysieren den Angriff der Bolschewiki auf den Islam seit den 1920er-Jahren. Altay Göyüsov und Il?nur Minnullin demonstrieren in diesem Kontext, wie die Sowjets insbesondere in Aserbaidschan und Tatarstan anfänglich versuchten, einige islamische Gelehrte und Intellektuelle auf ihre Seite zu ziehen. Während der frühen 1930er-Jahre zerstörten Kollektivierung und staatlicher Terror die islamische Infrastruktur fast vollständig, Moscheen und religiöse Stiftungen inklusive. Dasselbe Schicksal erlitten islamische Dorfgerichte (wie dies Vladimir Bobrovnikov in seinem Beitrag für Dagestan zeigt) und islamische Bildungsinstitutionen (durch A?irbek Muminov für Usbekistan dokumentiert) wie auch die muslimische Presse (am Beispiel Tatarstan von Dilyara Usmanova analysiert). ?amil? ?ixaliev zeigt am Beispiel Dagestan, dass auch die religiösen Bruderschaften von massiver Verfolgung betroffen waren. Dieser Phase der brutalen Repression folgte eine Periode des modus vivendi zwischen Staat und Religion in der Nachkriegszeit mit unterschiedlichen zeitlichen und regionalen Ausprägungen (Muminov, Bobrovnikov, ?ixaliev). Dabei wurde, insbesondere in post-sowjetischer Zeit, die Religion für ?patriotische? Zwecke instrumentalisiert, wie dies Christine Hunner-Kreisel und Manja Stephan in ihren, auf Feldforschung basierenden Beiträgen für Aserbaidschan und Mittelasien darlegen. Seit den frühen 2000er-Jahren steht der Islam fast überall wieder unter staatlicher Kontrolle; die führende Rolle des Staates bei der Definition eines ?guten? oder ?schlechten? Islams scheint weithin akzeptiert. Während ähnliche Formen staatlichen Drucks in allen Regionen es uns erlauben ein Überblicksbild zu zeichnen, wie islamische Traditionen unterdrückt und wiederbelebt wurden, ermöglicht uns die ?Archivrevolution? der frühen 1990er-Jahre faszinierende Einblicke in die spezifischen Entwicklungen einzelner Regionen und die Anpassungsstrategien islamischer Gelehrter und Intellektueller vor Ort. Das sowjetische Erbe ist jedoch noch weithin spürbar, genauso wie die Versuche dieses negieren und unmittelbar wieder an die unterschiedlichen lokalen Islamtraditionen von vor 1917 anzuknüpfen. Selbst wenn mittels der Übernahme von Islaminterpretationen aus dem Ausland versucht wird, die sowjetischen Erfahrungen zu ignorieren, geschieht dies häufig noch immer im Rahmen einer weithin sowjetischen geprägten Mentalität.‎
