br. La campagna elettorale permanente, un partito che non è di destra né di sinistra ma "del popolo", un improbabile contratto di governo, la voce grossa che mette a tacere i giornali, l'odio che penetra nel discorso pubblico, le accuse ai tecnici infidi, il debito, la gestione demagogica e irresponsabile delle finanze. Sono le analogie che minacciano il presente e rischiano di farlo somigliare pericolosamente a un passato che credevamo di esserci lasciati alle spalle. Quando Hitler nel 1933 divenne cancelliere del Reich, i cittadini tedeschi cominciarono a seguire incantati il pifferaio che li portava nel burrone. La cosa più strana, ma niente affatto inspiegabile, è che avrebbero continuato a credere religiosamente in lui anche dopo che erano già precipitati. "I nazisti," scrive Ginzberg, "non erano bravi solo in fatto di propaganda. Toccavano tasti cui la gente era sensibile, blandivano interessi reali e diffusi (non solo gli interessi del grande capitale, come voleva la vulgata). A elargizioni concrete corrispondeva un consenso reale, crescente e formidabile. La cosa che più impressiona è come siano riusciti a trovare consenso anche sui comportamenti più atroci e disumani del regime." Le analogie superficiali possono portare fuori strada. Eppure non possiamo farne a meno. La mente umana funziona per analogie. Le analogie si sono sempre rivelate uno strumento potentissimo per capire e distinguere, cioè l'esatto contrario del fare di ogni erba un fascio.
