‎[Latin America]. [World War II]. [Propaganda]‎

‎Libertad de Palabra. Una de las Cuatro Libertades por las Que Luchan los Aliados caption title‎

‎Washington DC: El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos 1942. Very good. Pictorial lithograph 20 x 14.25 inches printed in red gray yellow and black. Minor surface wear mild creasing light dust-soiling a few pinholes. A rare poster issued by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs CIAA during World War II attempting to sway public opinion in Latin America to the Allied side. The CIAA was established by executive order in July 1941 in order to distribute news advertising film reels and more to and from Latin America to counter Italian and German propaganda campaigns in the region. The text of the present poster translates from the Spanish as "Freedom of Speech. One of the four freedoms for which the Allies are fighting." The central image features an open-mouthed face breaking open a large swastika which is itself on fire. A mildly subtle message that free speech destroys fascism. The poster was designed by noted Russian-American graphic designer and photographer Alexey Brodovitch whose printed credit appears at top right; Brodovitch is most well-known for his art direction of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958. A powerful visual display with only one copy reported in OCLC at MOMA though we also find two other institutional holdings at the United States Holocaust Museum and the Hoover Institute. ‎[Elections]. [Propaganda]. Gillette, Guy‎

‎S. 990. In the Senate of the United States. A Bill to Protect the Integrity of the Democratic Process by Requiring Disclosure of Persons Writing Publishing and Circulating Scurrilous Literature in Connection with Political Campaigns. caption title‎

‎Washington DC 1941. Very good plus. 51pp. Original self wrappers. Soft horizontal crease. A slip-bill printing of the Gillette Propaganda Exposure Bill of 1941 proposed by Iowa Senator Guy Gillette. The bill sought "to protect the integrity of the democratic process by requiring disclosure of persons writing publishing and circulating scurrilous literature in connection with political campaigns; to deny the use of the mails to such literature and to prohibit its importation into the United States in default of such disclosure; and for other purposes." The text of the bill opens by attempting to outlaw "all published matter" which causes "public hatred or contempt" for any American citizen "because of race religion descent or nationality" during national elections and those in Hawaii Alaska and Puerto Rico. The bill also sought to establish an Office of Minority Relations to enforce the law and provided penalties to anyone breaking the new law. The final line of the bill states that it should be referred to as the "Propaganda Exposure Act 1941." Calling for honesty fairness and equal treatment in American political elections It'll never pass and it didn't. unknown‎

‎[WARTIME PROPAGANDA - GLORIES OF WAR].‎

‎プロパガンダ紙風船. Puropaganda kamifūsen. Propaganda Paper Balloons.‎

‎Japan. Circa 1942. Colour illustrations 3 origami "balloons" 15 x 7cm very good. The first balloon features bold illustrations of warships soldiers in combat and artillery pieces transforming a simple toy into a celebration of military might. The second displays award-winning slogans from a 1942 national propaganda competition including the infamous "欲しがりません勝つまでは" "We shall not ask for anything until victory is won"—a mantra of homefront sacrifice. Most chilling is the third balloon's juxtaposition: cheerful scenes of children playing with pigeons are undercut by ominous warnings like "spies are on the train and everywhere" revealing how paranoia infiltrated even innocent imagery. . unknown‎

‎1932 SHANGHAI "INCIDENT" ATTACK - CHILDREN'S PROPAGANDA TOY KIT].‎

‎廟行鎮攻撃組立大舞台装置. Byokochin Kumitate daibutai sōchi. Papercraft Diorama Kit on the Attack near Shanghai.‎

‎東京. Tokyo.: 博文館. Hakubunkan. Showa 81933. Six colour card cutout sheets folded as issued 39 x 27cm original wrapper with instructions 28 x 21cm. Paper wrapper chipped and torn with a little loss now neatly repaired with washi. Instructions are complete and the card sheets are in very good condition. This papercraft diorama kit was issued as a supplement to the children’s magazine Tankai in April 1933. The kit recreates scenes from the Japanese attack outside Shanghai in February 1932. During the mission to break through the Chinese defence line three Japanese soldiers were killed and subsequently celebrated as national war heroes known as 爆弾三勇士 The Three Brave Bombing Soldiers. Their bravery was highly revered and they became symbols of courage and sacrifice. <br> <br>The kit includes six platforms that when combined create a rising scene from the creek bed section. It depicts Japanese soldiers attacking Chinese buildings positioned on a hill supported by artillery and tanks. The set features numerous cutouts of Japanese soldiers in action while a smaller number of cutouts portray frightened Chinese fighters. Through this diorama young children learned about the conflict by recreating battle scenes and identifying with the war heroes during play. The kit not only served as a form of entertainment but also as a tool for instilling nationalistic pride and wartime ideology in the younger generation. . 博文館. [Hakubunkan]. unknown‎

A complete set of 12 leaves published without a title-page printed on rectos only each page with a frame of double rules and an additional single rule built up from short rules delineating a panel at the head that contains the title of the leaf 10 of the 12 beginning “Alfabeto .” and showing woodcut 3 or typographic 7 alphabets the latter showing Hebrew meruba & rabbinical Samaritan majuscule and Syriac estrangela & serto types. The other 2 leaves show a woodcut illustration of an inscription in stone and an interpretation of it including a smaller woodcut. 12 ll. Rare publication of the Propaganda Fide in Rome showing alphabets of non-Latin scripts published without a title-page and printed on the rectos only with 7 of the 12 leaves showing alphabets of the Propaganda Fide’s printing types for Hebrew 3 sizes of meruba square and 1 of rabbinical semi-cursive Samaritan majuscule and Syriac estrangela and serto. The Syriac language bears no relation to modern Syria but is a form of Aramaic spoken by many early Christians in the Middle East and still surviving today. The Propaganda Fide apparently had some of these types cut exclusively for their use and the present publication shows complete alphabets including some variant forms for 6 of the 7 in most cases also with a few words or lines of text it shows only the first half of the alphabet - alaph to kaph - for the very large serto Syriac. This provides an especially valuable overview of the founts. The present publication collates: A-C4 = 12 ll. with quire signatures on leaves 1-2 of each quire each leaf printed on the recto with a title at the head:A1: Alfabeto del protoparente Adamo I. delineato nella libraria Vaticana. woodcut charactersA2: Alfabeto II. di Adamo secondo che riferisce il P. ‎[JAPANESE PROPAGANDA] Asahi Shimbunsha‎

‎SAKURA‎

‎1944. JAPANESE PROPAGANDA Asahi Shimbunsha. SAKURA. Volume 6 #2 #31 overall. Large wrappered staple bound illustrated photomagazine in the tradition of FRONT and HOMELIFE. This number published in February of 1944 celebrated the plans for a cross continental railway to cross Eurasia from Tokyo to Berlin complete with an undersea tunnel from Japan to the mainland. SAKURA magazine was written in English Chinese and French. The whole world seems to lay at the feet of the Axis in this rosy scenario as sketched throughout the magazine. East Asia under the guidance of Imperial Japan is on the march to build a new world. Yet by February of 1944 the Red Army was in Poland and the Ukraine Sevastopol was cut off times were bleak for the 1000 year Reich indeed. Closer to home the Allies had "turned the corner" in the Western Pacific had isolated the large Japanese force at Rabaul and were headed north towards the homeland. At some point during the war reality and appearance began a rapid divergence and as the end approached it became all pure delusion. All of which does not obviate what an amazing visual feast SAKURA is from the covers to the ads a consistent message of normalcy progress and steadfast purpose in a great task. unknown‎

‎[AIRBORNE JAPANESE WWII PROPAGANDA LEAFLET].‎

‎Japanese Propaganda Leaflet Dropped on British Troops.‎

‎Circa1942. Small airborne propaganda leaflet printed on one side only featuring a colour illustration. Appears to have been dropped during the Malayan Campaign. 14.6 x 19.8 cm creased and marked on the reverse. Image still very clear and strong. Airborne colour propaganda leaflet urges the British troops to surrender to Japan. The rather oddly worded text reads: <br> <br>"Iron-rationed. Stranded. <br>Nothing but dog biscuits. <br>Day after day positively. <br>How about a dish of salad like this <br>For a change of diet. just a change of mind". <br> <br>The image shows three figures two of whom are identifiable as British soldiers in a desperate situation on a small piece of land possibly representing Singapore. In the distance their warships are burning. A plate of salad which dominates the image looks enticingly fresh and colourful albeit rather surprising that the Japanese military propaganda believed salad would motivate the soldiers to surrender! Similar messages published and dropped by the Allies were distributed to Japanese troops in Japanese towards the end of the Pacific War with the same aim in mind. <br> <br>Although we have not been able to identify the area depicted with absolute certainty we believe this leaflet was likely dropped during the Malayan Campaign rather than Guadalcanal as we have seen it attributed to. Our reasons for this include the leaflet showing British soldiers whereas American servicemen were primarily involved in Guadalcanal. The burning ships offshore seem to fit more with the sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse particularly as only two are depicted and they are being destroyed by what seem to be land-based bombers not other ships or carrier-based aircraft. Likewise at the late stage in the Pacific War that the Guadalcanal Campaign took place Japan was no longer in a position where they could cope with POWs nor were they likely to be in a position to print colour leaflets or distribute them. <br> <br>Commonly airborne leaflets were used over land battles rather than in naval battles. . unknown‎
