Korean War Propaganda Leaflet. "Christmas will be happy in the family".
Circa1950. Black and white photographic illustration with text lightly browned one small area horizontal central fold. Good copy. 13.4 x 19.3cm. This leaflet was one of a large number of propaganda documents produced by China and North Korea during the Korean War. Part of a series of black-and-white propaganda leaflets which appear to have been produced by the Chinese People's Volunteers the People's Republic of China forces supporting North Korea in the war it aims to convey the message that American prisoners of war were well treated and were in regular communication with their families back home. The printed text assures readers that POWs held by North Korean and Chinese forces will be repatriated soon after the armistice is signed whereas warns the leaflet Allied soldiers from the US Britain and other nations "will have to stay in Korea until the US Government makes up its mind to leave Korea to the Koreans." The photograph purports to show Mrs Christine Brown wife of Lt. Col Gerald Brown reading a letter from her husband who was a prisoner of war in Korea. Gerald Brown was in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Korea and spent almost 3 years as a prisoner of war. Lt. Col. Brown was in fact a Korean War POW who was later repatriated to the US but the authenticity of the photo cannot be verified. <br> <br>The leaflets were generally distributed by plane or stuffed into artillery shells though propaganda from the Northern side was also sometimes left in no man's land to be picked up by US and other forces fighting on the UN/South Korean side. . unknown

Japan. 1940. Two coloured fan prints 27.5 x 26cm. Occasional light marks a little light browning. Very good. These two propaganda prints were created to make children's paper fans each carrying patriotic messages and delicately rendered in bright colors.<br><br>The first sheet features a young boy on a white horse blowing a bugle. A Japanese warplane is seen flying in the sky with the rising sun in the background. The caption urges people not to disclose any military secrets even to close friends. Additionally the lyrics of the 1940 nationalistic song "Kokumin Shingunka" are printed on the sheet. <br><br>The second sheet depicts an idyllic scene of children playing by a lake catching dragonflies and fish. The boys are portrayed in more active roles while the girls hold a bucket or a cage. The message on this sheet reads "East Asia's Future is Bright and Children are Thriving." A warplane can be seen in the sky in the far distance subtly tying the peaceful scene to the wartime context. . unknown

Small folio 275 x 200 mm. bound in publisher's wrappers illustrated by Czech artist P. Skala. Moscow: Izdatel'stvo AKHRR: Shkola FZU pri 1-i Obraztsovoi tipografii 1928. A remarkable collection of Soviet imagery intended as instruction for decorating workers' clubs reading huts and use during rallies. The illustrations include fully decorated interiors concepts for 'hands-on' attractions such as a 'rayok' or Russian peep show shooting galleries and quiz shows. Most of the imagery is in the constructivist style but also includes numerous caricatures of western fat cats fascists and even a Ku Klux Klan member which would have been inspiration for costume design. Rare OCLC finds just one copy at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. The leaves with illustrations have an even toning from the printing process else a fine copy with the errata slip and unusually printed on fine thick paper. unknown

Portfolio of artworks celebrating the appointment of Hua Guofeng as the Chinese Communist Party's paramount leader and the arrest of his political enemies.
Beijing: People's Fine Arts Press 1977. With you in charge I am at ease" - Mao anoints a successor First edition reproducing the 151 artworks selected for a spring 1977 exhibition held in Beijing to much fanfare. Mao's death in September 1976 precipitated a power struggle the faction led by Hua Guofeng eventually prevailing over a radical clique led by Jiang Qing Mao's wife. The artworks include landscapes oil paintings woodblocks sculptures propaganda posters and other media. Organizers selected works by both leading artists such as Liu Wenxi and grassroots representatives of the masses. The most widely publicized exhibit was With You in Charge I am at Ease Ni ban shi wo fang xin an oil painting by Peng Bin and Jin Shangyi that shows Mao symbolically and fictitiously handing over the reins of power to an attentive Hua Guofeng the latter sporting a Mao badge on his breast. One of a number of paintings on the theme to appear in the immediate aftermath of Hua's taking power the picture was put on the cover of the exhibition catalogue. Other exhibits depict Mao and Zhou Enlai revolutionary models and scenes of a politically and socially harmonious society. The publisher released issues for domestic and international distribution. This example is identified as the international issue in the printed colophon. 151 loose sheets 320 x 380 mm printed one side only and mostly in colour; 8-page contents booklet. All housed in publisher's brown card portfolio front panel with title label lettered in gilt on red background. Each sheet numbered in pencil to correspond with pencilled number in contents booklet. Signs of light handling a little finger-soiling and colour offsetting portfolio with short split along one fold: a very good copy indeed. unknown

Shanghai: Shanghai renmin chubanshe 1975. First international edition first printing of this scarce septalingual propaganda poster representing the unity of Communist China's ethnicities and classes. Designed by model workers in Shanghai it was released to promote the Campaign to Study the Dictatorship of the Proletariat - the last hurrah of the Cultural Revolution's revolutionary politics before Mao's death in 1976. Chinese posters from the 1970s are uncommon in such collectible condition. In this poster multiple figures are shown clutching a pamphlet published in 1975 titled Makesi Engesi Liening lun wuchan jieji zhuanzheng Marx Engels and Lenin on the Dictatorship of the Proletariat. With Mao ailing and more moderate economic reformers resurgent radical members of the Chinese Communist Party's leadership spearheaded a new campaign to study Marxist-Leninist theory and reinvigorate the Cultural Revolution. In keeping with the period's emphasis on collectivized cultural production the artwork was produced by amateur artists from Shanghai's Jing'an District Cultural Palace with assistance from Li Min and Hu Yiren two factory workers and You Longgu from the publisher Shanghai renmin chubanshe Shanghai People's Press. A domestic edition of 30000 copies was printed in tandem with this international edition distributed abroad by China's state bookstore. We have traced one institutional copy of this edition at Hong Kong Baptist University as well as a copy from the domestic print-run at the University of Westminster. Examples only occasionally appear in commerce. Poster 530 x 760 mm showing a group of revolutionary figures with a slogan lettered in yellow in Mandarin Mongolian Tibetan Romanized Uyghur Korean Romanized Kazakh and Pinyin. Shanghai: Zhongguo renmin jiefangjun Shanghai jingbei qu 1971. The only traceable complete copy Sole edition first printing rare complete set of this portfolio celebrating the political economic and cultural role of the People's Liberation Army in the Cultural Revolution issued to Shanghai cadres responsible for creating pop-up propaganda exhibitions. Institutionally we have traced only the incomplete copy in the Tate's Martin Parr Collection. The 'May Seventh Directive' is the name given to a letter sent by Mao to Marshal Lin Biao in 1966 calling for the army to become an ideological bastion of the unfolding Cultural Revolution. By 1971 the directive had become a hallowed statement of the movement's guiding principles as well as the inspiration for the May Seventh Cadre Schools where party members who had politically erred could find redemption through a daily diet of manual labour and the study of Mao's writings. Sets of this portfolio were used in community spaces schools and workplaces to display the ethos of the directive. The posters are divided into four sections two of which invoke the spirit of Daqing and Dazhai the period's most important economic models: "Political Strides Forward - Mao Zedong Thought Nurtures and Renews"; "Study Dazhai - Triumph Over Nature with an Iron Will"; "Study Daqing - Make Revolution Through Self-Reliance"; and "Power in Unity - the Army and the People Stand Shoulder to Shoulder to Form a New Great Wall". Landscape quarto: 80 posters each 222 x 228 mm loose as issued with tissue guard. With 71 plates 20 colour after propaganda photographs gilt facsimile of Mao's calligraphy 8 decorative posters of text variously in red purple white and gilt captions printed in red. Housed in original folding red cloth portfolio with red string ties front panel lettered in gilt. Posters bright small closed tears at upper corners of title leaf old paper repairs on verso occasional cockling and creasing several small tidemarks and light toning at edges upper margin of second poster horizontally creased. A very good set indeed in the well-preserved case with gilt bright light rubbing and a little soiling especially to base. hardcover

Circa1960s. Collection of five colour-printed Nianhua posters each of the central images onlaid within a stiff red paper border with a thin cream paper frame worn and discoloured and at the top of each a fine aqua paper border; the sheets a little creased two images with a visible tide-mark minor edge tears not affecting the images strengthened neatly on the verso with washi one with an early paper repair to the top margin all approx. 93 x 51.5cms sheet size in good condition. Five examples of "new" Nianhua posters dating from the Great Leap Forward all featuring babies and children symbolizing happiness prosperity and the promise of a thriving future. In one a sister braids her hair whilst minding her crawling toddler brother "Sweet Heart". On the wall a poster proclaiming the industrialisation of agriculture "Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy and grain is the foundation" caption; in another five toddlers dance in a circle their flags and lanterns captioned "The Great Leap Forward" and "Long Live Mao". Ephemeral examples of folk art and the use to which it was put for political purpose. . unknown

Shanghai.: 上海裝鏡工業第二联營所. Shanghai jinggongye di'er lianyingsuo. Circa1940s - 1950s. Mirror with attached coloured image on paper under glass on reverse 10.5 x 15cm metal handle 15.5 x 17.5cm. Mirror a little stained and clouded at edges image browned at edges hanger rusty but still very functional. An interesting piece of 1950s propaganda. This portable travel mirror is a useful and decorative example of the sort of mass produced consumer items made in the early 1950s in small local workshops that were organised into collectives. Travel mirrors could be hung up or propped up for use by a moveable handle. On the reverse is a colour socialist-realist illustration of a red flag-draped locomotive a symbol of modern progress patriotism and peace. The colourful image of the train with its 天平商标 logo could be displayed when not in use or replaced with a photo with the mirror behind it. <br> <br>In 1952 when China built its first domestically designed locomotive it was called the "Peace" series which we see written on the front of this engine with the image of a dove. China's involvement in the Korean War to 'resist US aggression and assist Korea' depended on strong logistical supply lines to the front. Trains therefore became symbolic of national unity strength and China's ability to protect regional peace. Many such travel mirrors were bought as gifts and given as morale boosting items to the Chinese troops who could insert family photographs under glass on the backs of their travel mirrors. . 上海裝鏡工業第二联營所. Extremely rare unrecorded first issue of this Soviet propaganda organ published in Cairo the centre of the UAR by the USSR Propaganda Press Office with a striking cover design depicting the Sputniks in space celebrating the third anniversary of the Kosmicheskaya programma SSSR. The content begins with a comparison between the Soviet and American satellites. A full-paged photograph shows the Muscovites reading newspapers about the launch of the third Soviet satellite into space. In the periodical many details such as the construction processes and technical specifications of the satellites are explained as well as a striking history of the Soviet Space Program. Relations between Russia and Egypt have a long history dating back to before the 16th century. In the 1950s Gamal Abdel Nasser's independent and anti-imperialist policy earned him enthusiastic support from the Communist government of the USSR. In 1955 Egypt made a major arm deal with the Soviet Union and from then teams of Egyptian officers were trained in Eastern Bloc countries. Czechoslovak instructors also came in 1956 to train Egyptian personnel in the use of Soviet weapons. When France attacked Egypt during the Suez Crisis the USSR threatened to use destructive weapons i.e. nuclear weapons for the defence of Egypt. The degree of the Soviet approval of the Egyptian leader's policies culminated rather controversially in the award of the highest Soviet decoration the star of the Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin to Nasser during Nikita Khrushchev's visit to the country in 1964. Kosmicheskaya programma SSSR i.e. The Soviet Space Program was the national space program of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics USSR active from 1955 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. After WWII the Soviet and US space programs both utilized German technology in their early efforts. Eventually the program was managed under Sergei Korolev who led the program based on unique ideas derived by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky sometimes known as the father of theoretical astronautics. Contrary to its American European and Chinese competitors who had their programs run under a single coordinating agency the Soviet space program was divided and split among several internally competing design bureaus led by Korolev Kerimov Keldysh Yangel Glushko Chelomey Makeyev Chertok and Reshetnev. The Soviet space program served as an important marker of Soviet claims to its global superpower status. Wikipedia. 1984. Russian Anti-American Propaganda Poster. 1984. Measures 19 x 26 inches. Soviet anti-American/Vietnam War poster titled "ОÑтановите убийц!" - "Stop the killers!" Image shows aircraft marked "U.S. Air Forces" dropping bomb as a Russian woman holds her arms up as if to prevent the explosion. The upper section shows a stylized U.S. Air Force Jet rendered in harsh black-and-white contrast to symbolize mechanized American aggression. Below a terrified civilian woman raises her hands in a gesture of horror or plea typical of Soviet depictions of U.S. bombing campaigns in Korea and Vietnam. Design elements: The combination of red borders rough brush lettering and stark black-and-white photographic imagery was a hallmark of agitprop agitation propaganda posters produced by Soviet state publishers such as Izogiz or Plakat. World War II Broadside Protesting Forced Labor and Deportation of European Refugees Under Vichy France 1941

Broadside issued in 1941 by the Emergency Committee to Stop Deportations to the Sahara Desert articulating an urgent appeal against the forced deportation of anti-fascist refugees by the Vichy French government during the early years of the Second World War. Propaganda poster listing 21 wartime rules of behavior to help the republican side achieve victory over the fascists during the Spanish Civil War. As follows: As with most of the Republican posters the colors of the anarchists and communists black and red figure prominently in the poster. Many of the prescriptions seem geared toward inexperienced soldiers. This feature of the prescriptions is no surprise since much of the soldiers fighting on the side of the Republicans were volunteers or militiamen who were not professionally trained soldiers.<br /> The prescriptions on the poster are as follows: "Revolutionary enthusiasm plus discipline and good military organization will defeat the enemy. Without discipline the army is not powerful. Discipline is the unquestioning execution of the commander's orders. The commander should be the first in giving an example of discipline and making everything possible so that all orders from above are accomplished perfectly. Observe discipline in the line of fire! Cartridges are expensive! You should fire at fixed targets and only when the commander orders it. The infantry is the principal weapon. The artillery and air force complement the work of the infantry. No situation is critical when the enemy's infantry is weak. Know that the cavalry is dangerous only for those that move back. A brave and firm infantry can always put it in flight. You should not avoid enemy fire but you should take advantage of the situation in order to go on the offensive to attack it better and to fire against it with greater precision. Only he who attacks triumphs. The trenches are aid for the offensive. Always try to pass from defense to offense. The reconnaissance of enemy positions will save many forces. Do continuous reconnaissance. Communicate all that you discover to your commander. Bring every prisoner to your commander. Keep a tight link between the rearguard and the advance forces in order to prevent surprises and increase the force of your blow. One bad sentry lost Chapaief. Do not forget the sentries! Do not fear the attack of the enemy from behind since you can attack them in the same way. The tank without infantry is not dangerous. Attack tanks with grenades. Do not debilitate your attack in the presence of enemy planes. On the contrary intensify it. Attack the enemy infantry that advances behind enemy planes. Every commander of militias should make the most of their free time to instruct militiamen and they on their time should do everything possible to study. Learn to shoot with precision to understand maps and to identify with a locality. Do not speak of military subjects because the hated enemies are listening. Countrymen! Darling I Will Dream. and Truth Will Out!
North Korea or China.: Korean People's Army or People's Volunteer Army. Circa1951-1953. Two double-sided leaflets. Darling I Will Dream: 21 x 15cm. Truth Will Out: 19 x 13cm. Both leaflets somewhat foxed and trifle soiled chipped with a little loss though still in good condition for what were most likely once-active leaflets in a warzone. Two propaganda leaflets intended to be dropped over UN Forces in Korea attempting to convince them to surrender and cooperate with the KPA and PVA. Each leaflet appeals to different modes of persuasion with one relying on an emotional appeal and the other from the perspective of logic. <br> <br>'Darling I Will Dream That You Are Coming Back to Me This Christmas' is a typical example in the long-winded history of so-called 'counterfeit Christmas cards' that purport to show wistful appeals from sweethearts abandoned back home. The addition of the details of a supposedly deceased GI are intended to add credence to the letter's authenticity though a quick search reveals the soldier in question returned home after his successful tour of duty in Korea married his sweetheart and led out the rest of his life very well. <br> <br>'Truth Will Out' is a very early example of the conflicting narratives that permeate the North Korean historiography of the Armistice Agreement - most retellings largely hinging on the portrayal of the American leadership as a gaggle of mercurial incompetents. <br> <br>This particular account details a ceasefire negotiation in which General William K. Harrison abruptly walked out before waiting to hear General Nam Il's "very reasonable proposal". The ultimate purpose of this tale is to encourage UN Forces to passively revolt in protest. While the event did indeed take place in June 1952 in reality Harrison was not empowered to hear counter-proposals and called a recess before Nam Il had the opportunity to launch into what would have undoubtedly been an over-rehearsed propagandistic diatribe. D. Bruce Lockerbie the author of Harrison's biography theorised that the ultimate goal of the American delegation's walk-out was to not only deny the North Koreans a platform but also shock them which it evidently did. . It was a nice evening with drinks.
np 1944. . A single sheet measuring about 8 x 6 inches. One side printed in color depicting a half-naked woman reclining on a couch smoking a cigarette. The reverse of the leaflet bears text: "Yes it is the wife of Joe Jones or of one of your other boys." and goes on to describe how she has become unfaithful because her man is away fighting in Western Europe. This leaflet was produced in 1944 apparently disseminated by the Germans Skorpion West Organization used at the Battle of the Bulge and other fronts. Leaflet code number 981244/26.
