THE TRAIL BLAZER: Centralia Junior College Yearbooks
Centralia Washington 1944. The 1943 and 1944 yearbooks for Centralia Junior College in Centralia Washington a city located along Interstate 5 near the midpoint between Seattle and Portland. The school which opened in 1925 developed slowly at first constructing its first physical campus in 1950. As the concluding remarks in the 1943 Yearbook observe these were produced amidst World War II:<br /> <br /> "The Yearbook staff has tried to present representative activities of the college year. We found however that many activities important in our student life this year hard to portray adequately in pictures. Weekly sales of war stamps and bonds by-monthly manning of the Observation Post Red Cross drives and various salvage drives for the war effort were difficult to photograph. The staff hopes however that the pictures included in the 1943 Yearbook will serve as reminders of student participation in the activities due to the war as well as those of the regular college year."<br /> <br /> Produced in-house each yearbook is illustrated with tipped-in photographs 90 in the 1943 issue and 72 in the 1944 issue which is entitled The Trail Blazer after the school's mascot. The administration classes dramatic productions athletics and social affairs are som of the activities seen in the images. Both yearbooks belonged to Dorothy Mae Rigg later Collias 1924-2006 a lifelong Washington State resident. The signature and inscriptions of numerous classmates appear throughout.<br /> <br /> Unpaginated with 32 p. and 28 p. respectively. Both are bound with ribbon in blue cardstock wrappers 9" x 11" with printed black titles on the front panel of the 1944 Yearbook. Some general toning and minor soiling to the wrappers; otherwise very good. unknown

[WOBBLIES -- WORLD WAR I, WASHINGTON STATE].
In the service: the Great World War honor roll Southwest Washington.
Centralia WA: Published by F.H. Cole Printing Co. 1920. Tall 8vo. 216 pp. plus 18 pp. illustrated sponsor’s advertisements. Illustrated title with American eagle holding red white & blue flag in one claw with numerous photographic collage plates plates 1 large folding plate of Lewis County Company M. Illustrated dark khaki-coloured softcovers yapp edges gilt lettering on front cover illust. of American eagle holding flag minor edgewear rubbing still a NF copy w/ 5 photos of Sergeant Roy Strom 1897-1981 longtime salesman for Tidwater Oil Company in Tumwater WA and his buddies in France laid-in 1 of them a Real Photo Postcard w/ annotations on back identifying all of the soldiers. First edition of this exceedingly scarce history of the Southwest Washington doughboys in World War I with emphasis on Company M from the 161st Infantry. Of particular interest is the dramatic account of the fierce episode which amounted to a war of extermination of the IWW--the Centralia case. By slaying some members of Centralia Washington Legionnaires on parade on Armistice Day 1919 the Wobbly loggers managed to ignite a firestorm which destroyed the IWW as a Union. The community backlash resulted in the lynching of Wesley Everest a Wobbly organizer as well as a drive by the American Legion to raise funds by for the killed soldiers and for the Legion by publishing this Unit History and furthermore hiring Lampman -- a Portland Oregonian reporter -- to write the famed anti-IWW polemic Centralia tragedy and trial. In addition this World War I local Unit history includes an extensive section on the American Red Cross and the nurses from Centralia & Chehalis who served in France with the American Expeditionary Force. See: Copeland The Centralia Tragedy of 1919: Elmer Smith and the Wobblies pp. 88-99. Published by F.H. Cole Printing Co., paperback

[Women]. [Prostitution]. [Washington State]
An Appeal to Mothers and Fathers. The Information on This and the Following Pages Was Prepared by Some of the Members of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Mothers' Congress and Every Parent is Requested to Read It caption title
Seattle 1911. Very good. 4pp. on a single folded sheet. Two old horizontal folds partially reinforced with cello tape. A stark and sobering illustrated leaflet calling to action the parents and citizens of Seattle to help close a house of prostitution in the city and at the same time stop the construction of another across the street. Apparently a local businessman former mayor and current mayoral candidate named H.C. Gill allowed for the construction of a large dormitory-style building which housed 250 prostitutes; recently the foundation was laid for another building across the street slightly larger that would accommodate around 300 girls. The authors of the present leaflet implore the reader to vote against Gill the candidate who would "ratify the construction and operation of these buildings and the placing of 500 young girls inside as white slaves under the plea that such a thing is necessary for the Alaskans and the men of this city." The authors ask "Do the women of this city want 500 girls to be compelled to ply a shameful avocation in little cells 8x12 all night" And they beg voters to reject the candidacy of H.C. Gill as mayor in order to stop the construction and operation of these house of ill repute. The final sentence pleads: "Let every mother and home-loving woman go to the polls on March 5 and vote for Mr. Cotterill so that these buildings may remain uninhabited; that our homes may remain unpolluted and that the shame of Seattle may not be advertised to the world." A photograph of the exterior of the brothel already built covers page two of the work while a floor plan of the second and larger proposed building occupies page three. The printed caption for the former reads "The Largest House of Prostitution in the World Constructed in a Public Street Under the Sanction and Approval of H.C. Gill when Mayor and now Ready for Occupancy." The last page excerpts relevant unsavory passages from a Grand Jury Report on the subject. OCLC records just a single institutional copy at the Seattle Public Library. unknown

You Will Wish to Hear the Famous Canadian Woman Suffrage Leader Mrs. Flora McD. Dennison.at the Final Suffrage Mass Meeting in the Common Council Chamber City Hall. caption title
Watervliet NY: Century Printing Co 1917. Very good. Broadside 8.5 x 6 inches. Evenly toned a couple of shallow edge chips. A rare surviving flyer advertising a series of speeches at "The Final Mass Meeting" of the New York State Woman Suffrage Party before voting takes place for "Woman Suffrage Amendment No. 1" in 1917. The speakers include Mrs. Flora McDonald Dennison billed as "The Famous Canadian Woman Suffrage Leader" Frank Durham "Formerly of Colorado" and "The Liberty Loan Speaker Rev. Dr. J. Ellenwood." The meeting was presided over by E.J. Foley mayor of the New York town of Watervliet located near Troy and Albany. Flora Dennison was the leader of the Canadian Woman Suffrage Association; she spent two years on a lecture tour for the New York State Woman Suffrage Association as evidenced here. The speakers encourage people to vote for the woman's suffrage amendment which did indeed pass on the November 6 1917 ballot in New York. The vote was close with supporters outnumbering detractors 703129 to 600776. Passage of New York Women's Suffrage Amendment 1 predated ratification of the 19th Amendment by almost three years. OCLC records just five physical copies with another held in the noted suffrage collection of Ann Lewis. Century Printing Co unknown

The New World Order in North America: Mechanism in Place for a Police State (Throne of the Antichrist Series)
304 pages. Black and white illustrations. "Few of us have known until the release of this book that NAFTA may be an elaborate camouflage for a totalitarian police state stretching from the Canadian Arctic to the southernmost reaches of Mexico. Yet this is the thrust of a Secret Report by a North American Counter Intelligence Military Team and certain ancillary documents. The Report cites far-reaching legislation which shifted the responsibility for law enforcement in the U.S. to the U.N. The creation of MJTF and FINCEN seem preliminary to a massive round-up of North American citizens opposed to the New World Order." - back cover. Clean and unmarked with moderate wear.
