‎Very Good Arabic Original chromo-lithograph map in brown tones. On a special paper with an ongoing blindstamped "Regestre Robur" during the borders. Folded. 70x100 cm. In Arabic. Scale: 1 /1.000.000. Chipped on margins, split on folded traces. Slight discoloration and one stain on lower margin. Otherwise a good copy. An attractive and detailed map of Syria shows the capital (as Aleppo n that map), other cities like Damascus, Raqqa, Homs, Latakia, Ayn al-Arab, Idlib, Hama, Deir Ez-Zor, Jarabulus, et alli. And it shows Turkey on the north (as Turkey containing Hatay and Alexandrette), The Mediterranean shores of the land as well as Lebanon and Palestine (and Jerusalem) on the west, Sharq al-Urdun (Jordan) and Iraq on the south and east. It's very detailed on showing the roads spread throughout the land like railways and ancient roads from the Roman period. Additionally this roads can be followed to the other Arabic countries and regions on the map. This map was calligraphed by Kamel Al-Baba, (1905-1991), who was a Lebanese contemporary / modern calligrapher. He is the son of famous calligrapher Mokhtar Al-Baba. ‎Boston: Kiley Printer 7 Spring Lane 1885. Bi-fold menu 13.5 x 12 cm. 4 pages. Illustrated. Engraved menu for a banquet given for Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks former Senator from and Governor of Indiana. Hendricks was the 21st Vice President lasting a mere 8 months in office from March 4th through November 25th 1885. This dinner was given by the Bay State Club at the famous Parker House. In the few short months he had left Hendricks was to give a controversial speech in support of Irish independence and head of the Boston machine politician Martin Lomasney was to name the Hendricks Club after him. The light tan card stock boards sport a gilt-edged circular medallion with an engraving of the Vice President. The card is lightly dusty and with the slightest of abrasions at the corners. A detailed description of quantitative and qualitative data regarding the health and demographics of patients residing at the hospital as well as budgetary concerns and notes from head staff members. The State Hospital for the Insane at Warren was established in 1880 as the third mental institution for the state of Pennsylvania. Its number of residents reached a peak in 1947 with 2562 members. With 132 silver gelatin photos mounted on the pages sized from 2 x 2 in. up to 7 x 9 in. with majority sized approx. 3 x 4 in. varying between matte finish and glossy photo stock most w/ white ink MS annotations identifying locations & subjects a couple laid-in over 25 printed photo clippings from contemporary Seattle souvenir travel brochures 2 colour-printed postcards. Contemporary flexible textured calf flexible cover binding rebacked white manuscript lettering on front cover some scuffing edgewear occasional over-exposure to about 7 photos still a VG- exemplar. This well-arranged photo album opens with a colour plate of Northwest Coast Native Americans canoeing along the sound with Mount Rainier in the background followed by several images of Native Americans basketry totem pole in downtown Seattle and outdoor adventures and scenery in Washington. Over 25 of the photographs focus on William Waters and Larrebee Waters canoeing traveling and building a cabin near Copalis Beach WA. Also featured are several photographs of Quinault Indians on the nearby reservation including group shots in front of the post office with large dog canoeing across Grays Harbor Quinault children and mother next to their beach tent and others. Other photos capture William Waters with his law office staff including 1 Japanese-American in front of the 610 Pioneer Building William next to Pioneer Square and a very nice photograph of the “Judge’s Office.†Still more photographs document a visit to the 1905 Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition including a visit to the giant timber Forestry Building along with swimming & baseball at Brown’s Camp.Several photographs depict the fabulous salmon fishing and cooking at Colman’s Camp on Orcas Island in the Summer 1904 before the YMCA of Greater Seattle set up their famed Camp Orkila nearby in 1906. These photos show the canvas cabins excursion rowboats Mrs. Colman chaperoning the mixed bathing of young men & women and the beached steamship Mabel on the picnic beach. Summer 1905 found Waters and friends camping on Lake Washington canoeing splitting wood and even listening to the phonograph. Also featured along with a large contemporary photo of William Waters’ alma mater Harvard Law School are several photos of “Mamie†Harriet May Norton 1883-1965 whom he married in 1906. Along with photo of nicely appointed room and prominent placement of Harvard blanket and Northwest Coast Indian peaked hat hanging on the wall two of the photos capture Tsunezo Sawada b. 1885 their Japanese-American servant and cook including one view with the young couple in front of their canvas tent cabin from Seattle Tent & Awning Co. Sawada had emigrated from Japan by 1805 and would later move his family including his wife Mamoyo Sawada a medical nurse to Sacramento CA where he became a bean cake salesman supplying Japanese-American and Chinese-American restaurants cafes and hotels. Waters 1872-1956 was born in Lakeville New Brunswick Canada and later emigrated with his family to the Washington Territory in 1884. He later attended Harvard Law School and practiced law in Seattle WA until the end of the Roaring 20’s including a short stint in Yakima WA for the Northern Pacific. By 1930 he was living with his youngest son in Fullerton CA while Harriet Waters had moved in with their oldest daughter before returning to Seattle. William Lee Waters, unknown‎

‎Small album containing 12 photographs captured during an ascent of "Old Baldy" which looms majestically above Spokane Washington at 5883 feet. The southernmost mountain in the Selkirk Range it was known as Mount Carlton until August 1912 when it was renamed Mount Spokane.<br /> <br /> The images show a party of eight men at the start of their journey and at various points along the way including Sky Line Spring Brickell Creek and the summit. All the photographs are accompanied by holographic captions and two are identified as the work of Joe Shields. Notably there is an image of Cook's Camp and a portrait of Francis H. Cook.<br /> <br /> A pioneering figure in Spokane's history Cook 1851-1920 published the city's first newspaper The Spokan Times before setting his sights on developing an area on Spokane's South Hill. He purchased 680 acres and platted it out for development and in 1888 started the first steam-powered street railroad to move residents up and down the hill. Later Cook purchased the top of Old Baldy and set about securing the rights of way in order to build a road to the summit. Though he did not live to see it his vision was realized with the establishment of the Mt. Spokane State Park in 1927.<br /> <br /> The photographs are pasted to leaves of an oblong album which is bound with string in brown paper wrappers 8 1/2" x 5 1/4". The front panel features black titles and an original white ink and watercolor rendering of Old Baldy framed by tall trees. Some mild edgewear; else very good. unknown‎

Six exceptional Darius Kinsey photographs of the Lake Cushman dam projects on the North Skokomish River completed in 1924 and 1930 respectively astride the Olympic Peninsula watersheds whose salmon runs up to that time supplied the Skokomish tribal rights.‎

‎Macon County Tacoma & Seattle WA: Timber Views Co. ca. 1928. Six silver gelatin photographs sized 11 x 14 in. on thick glossy photo stock photographer’s imprint negative no. and location w/in negative at lower fore-edge slight curvature to corners still a very good set. An exceptional group of six original Darius Kinsey photographs capturing the construction project of Lake Cushman Tacoma Dam Site No. 2 engineering crew work crews massive log rafts floating on the lake as well as the finished Tacoma Dam No. 1. The Lake Cushman dam was first proposed in 1919 as the demand for power in Tacoma had vastly expanded during World War I and under direction of Ira S. Davisson the Tacoma Power Co. finished Dam no. 1 by 1926 using a concrete arch gravity and embankment design diverting water to a power house on Hood Canal. The second smaller Cushman Dam No. 2 construction as depicted here in these photos was begun and formed the small 150-acre Kokanee lake with this power house setting further down on the Hood Canal. The construction of the Tacoma Narrows transmission line stretching a mile and a quarter between towers in Tacoma and Gig Harbor were the longest in the World at the time. The Skokomish Tribal Council filed suit originally in 1930 over the destruction of their salmon run treaty rights and destruction of the salmon runs. These lawsuits spanned the next 70 years as the tribe claimed that not only had the project wiped out fishing/hunting grounds but also unlawfully enriched the City of Tacoma without lawful recompense of the resources to the Skokomish. January 13 2009 the City of Tacoma and the Skokomish Indian Tribe officially settled the dispute calling for the tribe to receive an up-front cash payment 7.25 percent of the value of electric production from Cushman Site No. 2 and transofer of $ 23 million in land including Camp Cushman the 500-acre Nalley Ranch and Saltwater Park. Darius Kinsey 1869-1945 had originally partnered with Alfred Kinsey in late 1889 but by 1896 had established a studio at Sedro Woolley north of Seattle and would continue to operate off an on together with photographic expeditions until 1906 when Darius opened his own studio in Seattle. His images would later capture the operations of the U.S. Spruce Production Division during World War I. In 1919 the couple changed the name of their studio to Timber Views Co. and were active commercial photographers in the Puget Sound Region including for the Lake Cushman projects. II w/ 1 detailed typescript leaf of table of contents for the 17 cyanotype blueprint maps some w/ annotations all numbered most large folding with sizes from 8 x 10 in. up to 21 x 31.5 in. Uniformly bound in Charles H. Potter expandable half-red calf over black cloth post-binders punch-sewn at gutter margins first vol. w/ brass screws 2nd vol. sewn w/ green cord hand-lettered label on spine of vol. I spine label on vol. II perished at head of spinesome chipping & creasing to spines some lifting still a VG set. These original mimeograph Reclamation Service engineering volumes detail the specifications for the construction of the Keechelus Dam and Keechelus Lake project at the beginning of the 20th century as part of six reservoirs intended originally to fertilize the verdant Yakima Valley. The Pacific Northwest private irrigation companies lacked the capital and engineering expertise to make the investment so through the Land Reclamation Act of 1902 the Keechelus project arose. Employing over 600 engineers surveyors and laborers The Keechelus Dam was completed from 1913-1917 at the head of the Yakima River and provided about 15 percent of the water stored for the Yakima Irrigation District. By the end of the 1990s it was determined that the dam was facing potential failure from piping and erosion so an elevation of 2510 feet was imposed and modifications and reconstruction were undertaken to control seepage and reduce erosion. The maps included in these volumes encompass the size of the Lake Dam the Spillway elevations of the Spillway Plan and Profile of the original dam under construction detailed record map of test pits as well as relocation of State Roads. Swigart 1864-1928 was an Ohio-born civil engineer who had been located in Everett WA at the time the project was first proposed and by 1903 was located in Yakima WA overseeing and directing the variety of reservoir projects as well as the reports on stream-flow records previously under the direction of the Geological Survey. Many of these maps show progress reports in hand-colouring indicating areas finished or under construction. No copies located in Worldcat.
