Annapolis MD: State of Maryland 1999. Presumed First Edition First printing. Single sheet printed on one side. Good. The format is about 11 inches by 75 inches folded in half resulting in four panels. The invitation information is on the first panel. The other three panels are blank. No envelope present. This was acquired at auction from the estate of Melody Miller a long-time retainer/aide to the Kennedy family. Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend born July 4 1951 is an American attorney who served as the sixth lieutenant governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003. She was the first woman to serve in that role. A member of the Democratic Party she ran unsuccessfully for governor of Maryland in 2002. In 2010 Townsend became the chair of the non-profit American Bridge an organization whose focus is to raise funds for Democratic candidates and causes. Since 2021 she has served in the United States Department of Labor as an advisor on retirement. She is a member of the prominent political Kennedy family and is the oldest grandchild of Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Townsend went to work for the state government of Maryland holding numerous posts including assistant Attorney General.20 In 1993 she took a job at the U.S. Justice Department overseeing grants to local police departments and community groups. In 1994 Parris Glendening was running for governor in a highly contested primary against then-Lt. Governor Melvin Steinberg when he selected her as his running mate. Experts did not believe she would be an asset but her name recognition she now used the name Kennedy Townsend and her fund-raising skills helped him to win. Parris Nelson Glendening born June 11 1942 is an American politician and academic who served as the 59th governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003. He previously served as the county executive of Prince George's County Maryland from 1982 to 1994 as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1999 Glendening was elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He taught government and politics as a professor at the University of Maryland at College Park for 27 years. In 1977 he co-authored Pragmatic Federalism: An Intergovernmental View of American Government with Mavis Mann Reeves. Glendening's career in public service began in 1973 as a city councilman in the Washington D.C. suburb of Hyattsville Maryland. He was elected to the county council of Prince George's County Maryland in 1974 and twice served as the council chairman. In 1982 he was elected as the county executive of Prince George's county eventually becoming the first county executive in Maryland history to be elected to three terms 1982–94. Under Glendening's leadership Prince George's county was selected as an "All America County" by the National Civic League and City and State Magazine named him the "most valuable county official" in the nation. He and his top aides stood to benefit from a controversial Prince George's county supplemental retirement plan that was not widely disclosed by the press until after he was elected governor in an extremely close contest. Extracts from a Baltimore Sun article: Parris Nelson Glendening took office as Maryland's 59th governor yesterday with a broad appeal for unity and inclusion. The former three-term Prince George's County executive the first Maryland governor from the Washington suburbs in more than a century delivered his brief inaugural address through a steady drizzle on a chilly afternoon. More than 2000 people braved the rain and 51-degree temperature to listen to the governor who -- with his lieutenant governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend -- had taken the oath of office less than an hour earlier in the crowded Senate chamber. He sounded familiar themes: promote economic growth foster better schools make communities safe protect the environment and develop a more efficient government. But most of all the Democrat spoke of a "Maryland family" where people work together for a common good. Maryland is "one state one family" Mr. Glendening insisted later in his address. He reinforced the point with a quotation from the poem "Outwitted" by Edwin Markham. "He drew a circle that shut me out -- Heretic rebel a thing to flout. But Love and I had the wit to win; we drew a circle that took him in." "Today we draw our circle. Today we begin an era of unity. We begin a time of inclusion" Mr. Glendening said. Some wear rubbing with loss to extremities. Hinges cracked. Scattered toning. 398 pages ; 23 cm. Includes anti-abolitionist laws preventing free negroes from emigrating to the state keeping negroes illiterate to suppress negro preachers by requiring police officers to be present to prevent "all seditious speeches and disorderly and unlawful conduct of every kind" and to restrict meetings and assemblies and to fine free negroes and imprison them if they enter into Missouri. "In 1847 the General Assembly passed an act stating that 'No person shall keep or teach any school for the instruction of negroes or mulattos in reading or writing in this State.' An uneducated black population made white citizens feel more secure against both abolitionists and slave uprisings although it probably did little to suppress the desire for freedom. Numerous persons and organizations defied the law. In addition meetings religious or otherwise conducted by other African Americans were prohibited unless some sheriff constable marshal police officer etc. was present. Augusta ME: Charles E. Nash & Son. 1920. First Edition; First Printing. Stapled wraps. Very Good-. This is a trade sized booklet with cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The booklet covers have bumping rubbing wear and several small chips. The text pages are generally clean though there is waterstaining to the top edge of the text pages. The bottom edges of several of the text pages have some wear that looks like the pages were cut a bit roughly. The booklet includes a list of cities holding observations daily programs that ran from June 26th through July 5th 1920 which include a centennial exposition. St. Paul MN: The Pioneer Press Company for the State of Minnesota 1891. Second Edition of 10000 Copies. Hardcover in 3/4 re-backed leather with original spines laid on decorated with gilt devices and titling. Near Fine. A nicely restored set of these somewhat scarce state reports of the rosters and activities of the State of Minnesota in the Civil War and in the "Indian War of 1862". Both volumes are square and tight due to their restoration and re-backing. Both spines are well preserved. The textblocks are toned but complete and tightly bound with some paper restoration having been done to the endpapers. New marbled endpapers were installed in volume one. <br /> <br /> This report was commissioned by the legislature of the State of Minnesota to document the rosters and activities of the State during the period of 1861-1865. The State appointed a commission to oversee the original reports which were exhausted. A second edition was commissioned and earlier mistakes were updated. Both editions had 10000 copies.<br /> <br /> Volume two of this set is "Reports and Correspondence". These copies were owned by a family whose relatives are noted in pencil in the first and second volumes. <br /> <br /> One of the finer copies available of this relatively scarce set. To Elisha Morton of Oxford Gentlemen Greeting: You having been elected Lieutenant of the B Company of Light Infantry in the first Regiment of the first Brigade and Sixth Division of the Militia of this State to take rank from the eighth day of July A. D. one thousand eight hundred and forty two. Reposing special trust and confidence in your ability courage and good conduct I do by these presents in the name of the State Commission you accordingly. You will therefore with honor and fidelity discharge the duties of said office according to the Laws of this State and to Military Rule and Discipline. And all inferior Officers and Soldiers are hereby commander to obey you in your said capacity; and you will yourself observe and follow such Orders and Instructions as you shall from time to time receive from the Commander-in-Chief or others your superior Officers. Given under my Hand and the Seal of the State the twelfth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forth two; and in the sixty-seventh year of the Independence of the United States of America. By the Governor Hand signed by John Fairfield in addition hand signed by the Secretary of State Philip C. Johnson and hand signed by the Adjutant General Alfred Redington. Registered Volume 5 No. 4370. The document has been folded once vertically and three times horizonally. The paper document has large brown spots in the upper right hand and lower left hand corners. Smaller brown spots are present elsewhere. The Seal of the State of Maine is in the upper right hand corner. On the reverse side of the document is the signature of Lieut. Elisha Morton. In addition on the reverse side of the document is that day's equivalent of an appearance before a notary public and taking the oaths required by the Constitution of this State. This document has been in my possession since the 1940's. It was acquired from Forrest L. Morton who had no children to pass it on to. About 15 or so years ago this document was taken to a book-binder preserver and a fee of around $100.00 was paid to further preserve the paper document. It would need to be shipped in a round tubed container. I do not at this time have the ability to put out pictures.
