Format is approximately 8 inches by 12.5 inches. Rare surviving pre-WWII Report of Birth Sheet has been folded so that there are four sections and it can fit into a standard legal envelop. Some wear soiling and edge tear as folds noted. This for is for the report of birth of a child born abroad on or after 12 o'clock noon E.S.T. May 24 1934 of parents one of whom is a citizen of the United States and the other of whom is an alien. This records the birth on November 5 1935 of Lillie Paulita Murdock at the British American Hospital. The father was Thomas Glenn Murdock a mining engineer who was born in Hiddenite North Carolina. The mother was Graciela Murua H. Murdock a Chilean. The parents were married on March 10 1934 in Antofagasta Chile. The physician involved with the birth was Dr. E. A. MacCornack. The form bears the original signature of T. G. Murdock on the front side and two signatures and embassy stamps by the Vice Consul of the United States. The reverse side notes that the provision of Section 1993 of the Revised Statutes of the United States as amended by the Act of May 24 1934 was orally communicated to Thomas Glenn Murdock that the right of citizenship shall not descend unless the child comes to the United States and resides therein for at least 5 years continuously immediately previous to his or her eighteenth birthday and unless within 6 months after the child's twenty-first birthday he or she shall take an oath of allegiance to the United States of American as prescribed by the Bureau of Naturalization. It is unusually for documents like this to survive and if survived to lead the confines of its family. As such documents such as this are highly prized and very collectible especially if as in this case there is an association with a person of note. From an obituary published in the New York Times on January 4 1971: Thomas Glenn Murdock had been since 1965 senior technical adviser in mineral exploration and mineral policy for the United Nations. In the last five years Mr. Murdock undertook missions to more than a score of countries. He was born in Hiddenite N.C. served as a military engineer in World War I graduated from the University of North Carolina and did post graduate work at the University of Alabama. Mr. Murdock was a mining engineer in Latin America for United States companies until 1939 when he became assistant geologist for North Carolina. In World War II he engaged in strategic mineral work for the United States in Brazil and Ethiopia. He joined the State Department in 1947 and served as Minerals Attaché for Africa south of the Sahara. From 1961 to 1965 be was with the Bureau of Mines in Washington. Surviving were his widow the former Graciela Murua and a daughter Lillie Paulita. Hiddenite is a census-designated place CDP in east-central Alexander County North Carolina United States. The population was 536 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Hiddenite was incorporated in 1913 but its charter was repealed in 1919. Hiddenite was named for William Earl Hidden 1853-1918 a mineralogist sent to North Carolina by Thomas Edison to look for platinum. Hidden discovered the gem that came to be known as "hiddenite" in 1879 in mines nearby. Until recently it was found only in Alexander County North Carolina but in recent decades it has been subsequently found in Madagascar and Brazil. The Hiddenite Gem Mines and surrounding areas also yield emeralds sapphires and many other precious stones. Sluicing and digging for precious gems is a popular recreational activity that draws many visitors to the area.<br/> Prior to the arrival of W.E. Hidden the community was known as White Plains; this is how the area appears on a map of 1871. Hiddenite was once noted as a health resort because of its sulfur springs. Cav." signed on front free endpaper; signed again on the title-page. amd possibly in the Preface. The 12th Indiana Cavalry later became the 127th Indiana Cavalry. The 12th was mustered in 1863 and saw a lot of action in Tennessee Alabama Louisiana and Georgia. His third inked name is clearly "Reed". He sometimes appears in the roster as "Read". According to the roster he was mustered out Mar. 31 1864; however the Lt. Col. lead a raid on the town of Vienna p now New Hope Alabama on May 29 1864. Col Reed was from Monticello White County IN.
