Jeypoor Treasury Jaipur Government India now in Rajasthan State. Eleven manuscript documents in Hindi script each with the large seal of the Jaipur Government and eight each with a Jaipur State 4 Annas stamp and one with an 8 Annas stamp.
1940s. Jaipur Government Rajasthan State India. Each of the documents with large printed design of the ‘Revenue Stamp Jaipur Government’ and two with additional ink stamp of ‘RAJASTHAN STATE’. Eleven documents all foolscap possibly relating to property. The tax stamps carried by nine of the items and presence on the two others of a Rajasthan State stamp suggest that they date from the early years of Indian independence. Nine are bifoliums each with punch-holed large blue oval design of the ‘Court Fee Stamp / Jaipur Government / Four Annas’ taking up much of the upper part of the recto of the first page. These documents are also blind stamped upside down on the reverse of the second leaf with an oval ‘Four Annas’ stamp of the ‘Jeypoor Treasury’. These nine items all have writing in Hindi in a variety of hands over three leaves. Each of the nine has a gummed stamp of the Above it in both cases is a small stamp of ‘RAJASTHAN STATE’. Neither of these items carries a gummed ‘Jaipur State / Postage & Revenue’ tax stamp with depiction of a young man in a turban; eight of them green and grey 4 Annas and one brown and grey 8 Annas. Each of the 4 Annas stamps has a punch hole in it and the 8 Annas stamp is entire but with one corner deliberately cut. The other two documents are each of 2pp with similar writing along with similar oval design in red ink at the head of the first page to the other nine but smaller this time for ‘Eight Annas / Revenue Stamp / Jaipur Government’. Six Autograph Letters Signed and one Autograph Note Signed all 'J. H. Trumbull' from the philologist James Hammond Trumbull to Thomas Raynesford Lounsbury mainly on a paper by the latter in the Transactions of the American Philological Association
All eight items from Hartford Connecticut one on letterhead of the Watkinson Library and two on letterheads of the American Philological Association. All from 1871. The seven items in good condition on lightly-aged paper. Totalling 10pp 12mo. A correspondence between two Yale men. The first six items between 11 April and 29 June 1871 relate to Lounsbury's 'paper on old English verb forms for publication in the Transactions of the Amerian Philological Association'. A letter of 8 May 1871 is revealing of the difficulties encountered by Trumbull in editing the journal: 'Your paper is safe in hand and I do not apprehend any trouble with it typographical or other. As to punctuation I have so far left every man to do as seemed best to him - but as Profs. Hadley & Whitney have "led off" I will instruct the printers to conform as nearly as possible to their pattern for the sake of uniformity. I have now waited ten days for the return of a revise from Prof. Goodwin of Harvard - and four compositions have been sitting still. I can sympathize with your pangs of mental travail. My brains have not worked at more than half-caterpillar power for a month - and every page has cost me more time to spoil than a half-quin ordinarilly does. postscript I shall send you proofs of course - when we get them. How many extra copies do you want' On 12 June 1871 he comments: 'White's article in the Galaxy was the best thing he can do. I honestly admired it as a bit of fine play. . And having said so much I feel at liberty to add that I was delighted by the rejoinder in the "Courant". You have "counted" every time and need have no fear of the game. I feel a personal interest in the matter - having saved White's book a grudge ever since I read early installments in the Galaxy.' The last letter discusses the question of 'where to send Lounsbury for a good bibliography of glossaries of English dialects and provincialisms'. The original volumes are reproduced exactly and a complete surname index to all three section was prepared for this edition. This copy is in excellent condition; clean and tight with no foxing or markings. Pertinent b&w photos scattered throughout. Blue covers with bright gold gilded letters on front and spine. Corners sharp. Dust Jacket has gently tanned evenly all over. No nicks or tears no soiling or stains. Jacket covered with a mylar sleeve. A really handsome copy. Signed by James Stacy with a short inscription and dated 1911. Cover is firmly attached but both front and rear hinges are cracked. The front and rear endpaper are present but not attached. Water stains to the bottom third of about 40 pages which does not obsure any printing or photos. No markings foxing or soiling to interior. Corners of boards are bumped and board is exposed on very tip of corner. Some rubbing at head and tail of spine. Gilt on spine fairly bright and readable. This book is half leather spine and corners are leather covered with a pinkish linen cloth on front and rear covers. The book is in Very Good condition and was issued thus without a dust jacket. The spine joints of the book covers have w and rubbing and there is rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book cover as well. The spine of the book has a two inch spot of darkening to the the leather. There is some foxing to the linen cloth on the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the first free page and another owner's bookplate on the front pastedown page. "George Wharton James 27 September 1858 8 November 1923 was an American popular lecturer photographer journalist and editor. Born in Lincolnshire England he emigrated to the United States as a young man after being ordained as a Methodist minister. He served in parishes in Nevada and Southern California gradually beginning his journalism and writing career.
