NY: Huntington Press 1933. a rare copy with impeccable provenance from the collection of the distinguished Western American and United States Army historian Roy Edgar Appleman; immaculate tight textblock with top edge gilt; deckled fore edge; lightly worn Brick-Red cloth with gilt pony silhouette-over-black leather inlay on front cover; laid in is a typed/signed letter dated February 29 1944 from William Leigh to a then young Lt. Roy E. Appleman inviting him to stop by his Leigh's studio at 200 West 57th Street New York City to look at some of his paintings. Appleman had previously written Leigh about an exhibit that had closed and Leigh's very cordial response must have prompted Appleman to call on him sometime later probably in 1946; a hand-written notation on the front end paper by Appleman dated 2 Nov 1946 reads as follows: "Roy E. Appleman/ Mr Leigh told me the plates were in 16 color process made in Vienna. The publisher contracted or promised 1000 copies but only 500 of the book were manufactured. 2 Nov 1946"; Appleman's notation continues: "this book long out of print I obtained from Mr. Leigh at his home. He had only one other copy." Wright Howes' USiana bibliography states that only 100 copies were printed so this begs the question of who has their facts straight This copy does NOT have an additional signed color print laid-in however on the second front free end paper is the following ink notation in the author's hand as follows "W. Several errata have been overprinted in purple ink rubber stamp. FIRST EDITION. Byron Martin Lelong 1856-1901 was the Secretary of California's State Board of Horticulture and amongst a generation of farmer-scholars working and publishing in California in the 1880s and 90s. Others included Thomas Garey and William Andrew Spaulding and in a different way Santa Rosa's Luther Burbank the great seedsman. Lelong's published work focused on citrus as well as prunes figs and walnuts. This treatise is mostly a technical manual on the best varieties of oranges and other citrus to plant in California as well as a guide for how to care for them. It also includes recipes for lemon pie orange souffle and citron cake. Illustrations show the physical differences in each variety of citrus including one of the cross section of a "Pumpel-mouse". Boards lightly scuffed with soiling to margins and fading to spine. Corners bumped and gently rubbed with boards bowing out at fore-edge. Rippling to endsheets with page margins lightly toned. Title page offset by frontis. Text has overprinted errata in blue to correct spellings to a few pages. In publisher's dark blue pebble-grained cloth lettered in gilt. Overall very good or better. L'antisemitisme Grec en Asie Mineure. (Smyrne, 1774-1924).
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In French. 230 p., ills. Au début du XXe siècle, l'Asie Mineure occidentale, ottomane depuis cinq cents ans est une région prospère. Smyrne est la ville phare de la région ; c'estune ville moderne, ouverte sur le monde, un port dynamique où l'Occident rencontre l'Orient. La ville abrite plus de 200 000 habitants ; Turcs, Grecs, Juifs, Arméniens et Levantins y cohabitent. A Smyrne et dans les villes environnantes, chaque communauté vit dans son quartier structuré autour des lieux de culte. Les habitants, qui quelquefois n'ont pas de langue commune, se côtoient dans les bazars ou sur les quais. Les relations inter-communautaires, qualifiées souvent d'harmonieuses, sont en réalité fréquemment tendues. Des conflits religieux, des rivalités commerciales, des animosités séculaires dégénèrent quelquefois en confrontations. En 1901, la communauté juive de Smyrne est victime d'une violente " calomnie de meurtre rituel " orchestrée par les Grecs de la ville. Cet événement, largement médiatisé à l'époque, provoque des remous et des indignations, aussi bien dans l'Empire qu'en Occident. Or cet incident, qui n'est pas un cas isolé, est le révélateur d'une animosité réciproque ancestrale qui n'a fait que se détériorer avec le temps. Ce livre a pour objectif d'étudier et d'analyser les différends qui opposent les Grecs et les Juifs en Asie Mineure sous l'administration ottomane, en tenant compte des évolutions parallèles des deux communautés. Au XIXe siècle, les relations inter-communautaires seront perturbées par la montée des nationalismes, l'influence non négligeable de l'Occident et les réformes administratives de l'Empire. Des préjugés d'un autre temps, très ancrés dans l'inconscient collectif, auront aussi des conséquences dans la vie quotidienne de ces sociétés.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In French. 131 p. La communauté Juive d'Urla: Equilibres inter-communautaires dans une ville Ottomane en 1900. Urla est une petite ville ottomane située à l'ouest de l'Anatolie, sur la côte de la mer Egée. C'est une ville agricole prospère qui évolue à l'ombre d'Izmir, la mégapole régionale. Urla, au même titre que les autres villes de la région, abrite plusieurs communautés ; les Turcs et les Grecs forment les deux principales composantes de la ville. La communauté juive est plutôt modeste ; à son zénith, au début du XXe siècle, elle sera d'environ 90 familles. Elle est néanmoins bien organisée, avec ses structures communautaires, sa synagogue, son école et ses sociétés de bienfaisance. Les Juifs d'Urla accueillaient aussi, à l'occasion des fêtes, leurs coreligionnaires de Karaburun et de Sivrihisar, deux localités voisines où les Juifs ne sont pas assez nombreux pour avoir une synagogue. La présence juive à Urla, n'est pas « anecdotique » comme certains l'ont laissé entendre. Urla, tout comme les autres localités qui gravitent autour d'Izmir, ont leurs communautés juives, souvent très anciennes et bien ancrées dans le tissu social de la cité. Cependant celles-ci ont souvent été délaissées en faveur de celle d¿Izmir qui a de tout temps focalisé toute l¿attention. Lorsque l'on parle des Juifs d'Izmir, on prend rarement en compte les communautés périphériques, qui pourtant ont largement contribué à la prospérité et à l¿épanouissement de celle d'Izmir. L'objet de ce livre est d'étudier cette société juive, son histoire, ses m¿urs et ses coutumes, mais aussi ses relations avec les deux autres communautés de la ville. Les relations gréco-turques, apaisées jusqu'au début du XXe siècle, vont progressivement se dégrader ; à partir de la Révolution jeune-turque de 1908, l'animosité latente se transformera en affrontements. Aujourd'hui, un siècle après ces événements, les traumatismes sont encore là. Les Juifs se sentent évidemment concernés par les événements qui secouent l'Empire, mais ne s'y impliquent guère ; ils ont de ce fait un regard extérieur, plus libre, et sans doute plus objectif sur le conflit gréco-turc. Rappelons aussi que l'histoire d'Urla est indissociable de celle d'Izmir. Regarder Izmir depuis Urla, commenter les événements qui ont marqué la ville depuis la province, apporte aussi un regard différent et sans doute plus critique sur l'histoire locale.
