NICOLAS DE NICOLAY D'ARFEUILLE & DE BELAIR, (1517-1583).
[FINE COPPER ENGRAVING 17th CENTURY] Les yurongnes [The wrestlers]: Azamoglan, Levent, Azappi. Engraved by Louis Danet.
Very Good English Original copper engraved plate. 35x23,5 cm. French text on verso on 'Cuisinier Turc'. This is palte numbered 18. Published in 1598, Quatre premiers livres des navigations (Travels in Turkey) recorded Nicolay's observations about the Ottoman court and peoples from his 1551 mission to Istanbul on behalf of the French government. The book served as the first comprehensive survey of customs and costumes in the Ottoman world, and is hailed as one of the earliest and most accurate depictions of the Islamic world to appear in Europe. Travels in Turkey achieved a high level of commercial success upon its release. It was later reissued and translated for a number of different countries, including Italy, the Netherlands, England, and Germany. The widespread popularity of the book contributed to the proliferation of costume books throughout Europe at the end of the 16th century, and continued to influence Orientalist artists well into the 19th century such as Eugene Delacroix and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Travels in Turkey is divided in four books, following Nicolay's voyage to Istanbul, accounts of ethnic groups and Ottoman court life, and the religious and military administration in Istanbul. Louis Danet made 60 engravings based on Nicolay's original drawings, which serve as the core of the books, and each print is followed by a caption, describing Islamic ritual, religion and monuments. The images cover all aspects of Ottoman daily life, and depict figures ranging from sultans and sultanas to wrestlers, cooks and Janissary generals.

Tatlarin: Wall paintings of churches no. I and no. II.= I ve II no'lu kiliselerin duvar resimleri.
As New English Original creme leather bdg. with special design. A Byzantine saint gilt under the window of front cover. Mint. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [8], 282 p., 186 numerous color figures. Tatlarin: Wall paintings of churches no. I and no. II.= I ve II no'lu kiliselerin duvar resimleri. Tatlarin underground city, which was one of the most important underground cities of the Cappadocia region, could only be discovered in 1975 because its original entrance had collapsed and had gone underground to be opened to the visits of tourists in 1991. The toilet in it demonstrates that toilets were being used in Anatolia around 3000 years ago. There are many food storage areas and churches within it. It is believed to have been used as a center for religious or military purposes judging by the large size of its rooms. Only two floors of the Tatlarin underground city which has spread over a pretty large area can be visited currently, however works continue to open the other floors to visits as well. Although there is a large number of churches around and within the Tatlarin underground city which is near the Acýgöl district of the Nevþehir province a major part of them have collapsed due to natural causes. This book includes wall paintings of two of those churches, No. 1 and 2.

NILÜFER RÜZGAR.
Leadership traits of the emperors of Ottoman ascension period: Great mantheory.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. [vii], [1], 107 p., b/w ills. According to the "Great Man Theory", leaders are born with a set of specific skills and traits that makes an individual destined for a leadership position. Also known as a trait perspective to leadership, it suggests that certain individuals have special innate or inborn characteristics or qualities that differentiates them from non-leaders. Specifically, these characteristics were believed to include height, weight, appearance, intelligence, disposition and others. Furthermore, charismatic and inspirational leaders instil faith in a better future for the followers in terms of their self-expression, self-evaluation, and self-consistency. The history of Ottomans is complicated and complex in terms of its emperors from the beginning to the end, in addition to severe relations with Europe and Asia. In this sense, especially the ascension period constitutes great importance; because of the fact that the six emperors of the period turned the Ottoman State into an "Empire" with their individual traits and acts. Therefore, it is worth to consider them as "great men" and evaluate them in this frame in order to construe the claim. It is expected that this book sheds light to the future researches in terms of evaluating both the emperors of Ottoman Empire and the other World emperors in terms of great man theory.

NIMET ELIF ULUG.
Elemterefis: Superstitious beliefs and occult in the Ottoman Empire, (1839-1923).
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 522 p. Elemterefis: Superstitious beliefs and occult in the Ottoman Empire, (1839-1923). This book is about the social history of superstitious beliefs and especially magic and sorcery. I mainly tried to examine how superstitious beliefs and magic transformed the daily life of the Ottoman Empire into a world of superstitions in the nineteenth century. However, I had to go further back when I deepened my research into the origin of superstitious beliefs and magic seen in almost every period of the Ottoman Empire. I looked at polytheistic religions like shamanism, Animism, Manichaenism, Buddhism and Hinduism, which were the common religious beliefs of the former Turkish world. I included various other pagan religions and cultures underlying the past of the Ottoman geography over three continents as well as Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, the Sky God belief in Central Asia and finally Islam. In the Ottoman Empire, ¿professional¿ magicians were of the ulema class who were not reluctant to utilize religious knowledge for their personal interests. In fact, they began to live immorally; ¿amateur¿ magicians were composed of occult groups, a.k.a. pseudo-clergy. I followed magic and magicians included in the documents of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives only as they were caught as a result of a complaint. Füsun and Efsun, daughters of Cinci Arif Hoca, and their story add local and authentic flavor to the points made in the book.

Very good . Overall condition. "Coalville originally began as a settlement known as Chalk Creek. In 1854 the territorial government in Utah offered a $1000 reward to anyone who could find coal within 40 miles of Salt Lake City. Four years later Thomas Rhodes found a coal vein in the Chalk Creek area and coal mining began in earnest.6 Hundreds of tons of coal were shipped to Salt Lake City and soon a narrow gauge railroad was built.7 The settlement was then renamed Coalville as a result of this early success".-wikipedia. unknown
