Peterson P. Alfred
The appearings of Christ and their purpose drop title
Alvarado Minn: Maranatha Tract Mission 1930. 8vo pp. 8; self-wrappers; short tear along previous fold pages uniformly toned else very good and sound. Peterson appears to have been the editor of a the Alvarado-based Baptist journal "Maranatha" as well as two collections of Christmas tracts. The 1940 census lists a P. Alfred Peterson born in Sweden in 1886 and currently residing in Alvarado Minnesota with a wife and 5-year-old son. The author's foreign origins would most likely explain the use of the non-existent word "Appearings" in the title. This monograph on the appearances of Christ appears to be unrecorded with no holdings in OCLC COPAC or the Minnesota Historical Society as of July 2014.

Maranatha Tract Mission unknown books

Wealth and Resources of Alaska Census Bulletin No. 39 March 16 1891
Washington D.C.: Department of the Interior 1891. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 15 pp 7.75 x 10 inches; stapled self-wrappers. Old creases from folding light handling wear; very good. Issued in advance of the full 1890 census report on the Alaska territory "in view of the extraordinary interest now being manifested in everything that relates to this remote and comparatively unknown country" this bulletin provides details on the "four principal sources of wealth" in Alaska: fur fish minerals and timber. The author a Russian-born soldier historian and newspaper editor was director of the 1890 Census for Alaska. Here after discussing the resources prominent in different parts of the territory he bemoans the fact that the land is being stripped of its bounty by outsiders with little care or compensation for the native population and other local residents: "The spectacle of so vast a tract of country being thus drained continually for twenty-three years without receiving anything to speak of in return can not probably be equaled in any other part of the United States and perhaps of the world." The solution he says is increased immigration and settlement by those who wish to develop Alaska's industrial potential but this "would appear to be still in the distant future." Wickersham 8626. PEYAMI SAFA, (1899-1961).
[ALIENATION AND UTOPIA] Yalniziz. [i.e. We're alone].
Fine Turkish Modern cloth saved original illustrated wrappers inside. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 343 p. First edition of this Turkish utopian novel in book form published after being serialized in Yeni Istanbul newspaper. Samim is the protagonist of the novel and the founder of "Simeranya" which is thought to be in the form of an island, being located elsewhere. One can go to Simeranya by dreaming or while in a dream. The space is introverted. The interior and exterior spaces were described as real places. The subject of education was given particular importance and regarded as an institution that produces and reproduces the system. The future is predictable. Although there are utopian tendencies such as those mentioned above, the novel does not carry many features of classical and modern utopia. Safa wrote about how he solved the problems that he experienced in real life in Simeranya. (Sakaci). Safa was a Turkish journalist, columnist, and novelist. He came to the fore in the Turkish literature of the Republican era with his psychological works such as Dokuzuncu Hariciye Kogusu [i.e. Ninth External Ward]. He reflected on his life and the changes to his works. He wrote many novels under the pseudonym Server Bedi. He created the type Cingöz Recai inspired by Arsène Lupin of the French writer Maurice Leblanc. He also worked as a journalist at various institutions and published in several magazines such as Kültür Haftasi with his brother Ilhami Safa. (Wikipedia). Not in OCLC. (Utopias from the Middle East 18).

Photo collection Iowa State Fair Lunch Stands
Photographic talley of placement of 7UP advertising
Iowa 1958. Collection of sixty two vintage black and white or color gelatin silver photographs individually approx. 9 x 12.5 cm. most mounted on eight loose photo pages with handwritten dates to rectos and some with captions on the versos. Age-toning to the color photographs with a few items with corner chips from mounts. Several loose photos and several spaces on the pages where photos appear to have been removed. Still overall very good as a collection. ~ A collection of photographs depicting hamburger stands and luncheonettes between the years 1952 and 1958 taken at the annual Iowa State Fair. Although the food served at each stand varies from hamburgers to fried chicken; each stand has a 7UP logo. These photos were likely taken by a representative of 7UP or someone from the State Fair committee as some of the handwritten captions mention how long the sign was in existence most are dated with the year of the State Fair. A photo caption of the sign for the stand of Christ Church Evangelical United Brethren reads "2nd year for sign"; another of a stand with signs on the front and sides reads "first year for both signs." The color photos have a Kodak stamp on the verso and are mostly taken between 1952 and 1954. While the intention may have been to document the 7UP advertising there is more recorded in the photos as well. The signs announce the offerings of each stand: "Hot Lunches" Fried Chicken" "Good Coffee!" and "Ice Cream Sandwiches" as well as the owner's who appear to be small family or single-owner operations such as Opie's Funroy and Wheeler Graham's CEC & PEG Don's Larsen's Turner's Jean & Shirley the aforementioned Christ Church Evangelical United Brethren and the White Front Café. Some that are not identified by name on the same have a short manuscript note indicating the proprietors. Styles of seating vary with stool low benches or no seating and just a walk up wooden counter. A more official looking business is the State Fair Store housed in a permanent wooden building and offering "Groceries Meats Picnic Supplies". The people of the fair appear in some images either working behind the counter sitting at the stools or benches or just milling about. An interesting collection of 1950s state fair food stands with a tie to the renowned fizzy beverage. unknown books
