‎Satire Menippee.‎

‎SATYRE MENIPPEE, De La Vertu Du Catholicon D'Espagne, Et De La Tenue Des Etats De Paris. A laquelle est ajoute un Discours sur L'interpretation du mot de Higueiro Del Inferno, & qui en est l'Auteur.‎

‎Three volumes. Engraved frontis and other engraved plates, two of them folding. Inconsequential marginal worming in one volume. 16mo. Worn leather backed boards binding. Spines should be replaced. XLib. [French Art Alliance, New York]. An important satire which parodies the assembly of the Etats Generaux held in 1593 (with the object of electing a Catholic King). It expresses the views in favor of the claims of Henri IV while opposing the Ligue [Spanish League and its supporters]. The satires greatly influenced the outcome of the assembly, and Henry IV was elected. The work is divided into three parts. It begins with a burlesque description of the opening procession of the assembly and this is followed in the second part by a catalogue of the chief Ligueurs and imaginary speeches by real persons. Finally, there are miscellaneous satires and epigrams. Written at the moment of the defeat of the Ligue, it was an immediate 'best-seller'. Authorship is usually ascribed to Jean Leroy, a canon of Rouen, with the collaboration of Jean Passerat, Pierre Pithou, Nicolas Rapim and others. This is the standard eighteenth century edition. The title of the lampoon derives from Saturae Menippeae, lost work of Varro based on satires by the Greek cynic Menippus. Brunet V-145; Cohen-De Rici 939. FR2‎

‎Sawyer, Eugene Taylor (Foreword by Joseph A Sullivan)‎

‎The Life and Career of Tiburcio Vasquez; The California Stage Robber‎

‎Oakland CA: Biobooks / Grahborn Press. 1944. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. This is an oversized hardback book. The book is in Very Good condition and was possibly issued without a dust jacket. This edition limited to 500 unnumbered copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some beginning bumping and rubbing. The red cloth spine has a paper label that is in mostly clean condition - there is a small ding to the top front corner and the lable has noticeable toning. The text pages are clean and bright. "Tiburcio Vásquez was born in Monterey Alta California Mexico present-day California United States on April 11 1835 to José Hermenegildo Vásquez and María Guadalupe Cantúa. In accordance with Spanish tradition Vásquez's birth was celebrated on the saint's feast day of his namesake St. Tiburtius; thus he always referred to his birthday as August 11 1835. His great-grandfather came to Alta California with the De Anza Expedition of 1776. He grew up in a moderately well-off middle-class family who owned land granted to them by the Mexican government due to his father's military service as a Spanish soldier. He spent plenty of time on his father's and his Uncle Felipe Vásquez's ranchos learning the skills of ranching. He was noted as excellent in marksmanship and horsemanship from a young age. Vásquez was slightly built and about 5 feet 7 inches 170 cm. " from Wikipedia; B&W Illustrations; 92p. pages; Pictured 3/7/26 . Biobooks / Grahborn Press hardcover‎
