His prefatory remarks allude to women in attendance and he recalls his experience of giving the examination to the first woman to apply to the North Carolina bar Tabitha Ann Holton admitted 1878. Edwin Godwin Reade 1812-1894 was an antebellum U.S. Congressman Confederate Senator president of the North Carolina convention on Reconstruction of 1865-66 and justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court 1868-1879. Born in 1835 in Dekalb County Georgia she was a writer and an ardent supporter of many Progress Era reforms. Her nemisis was the noted historian and educator Mildred Lewis Rutherford who was anti-sufferage even though she was ambitious herself and did'nt mind the spotlight of success shining on her. The wife of a powerful politican in Georgia; Mrs. Felton ran his campaigns. Mrs. Felton was a supporter of white supremacy and felt that lynching was a way to control the black male population. This copy of her autobiography has very old water stains to the last third of the pages at the top of the page margins. Tighly and securely bound in maroon buckram with gold lettering on the spine this copy has been rebound by the National Library Bindery some time early --the forties or fiflies. Some light spots on covers but no wear. No foxing or soiling. 299 pages First Edition. Table of Contents in back of book Picture of author frontis with title page. Nice sturdy well preserved copy at a fairly modest price. <br/> <br/> Index Printing Comapny hardcover

This book is the outcome of an extensive research work by Prof. Dr. Recep Çi¿dem from Harran University in Turkey. It is published within IRCICA¿s Series of Sharia Court Registers. It analyzes the records of the Ottoman Sharia law courts preserved at St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library in Bulgaria. In the first chapter of the book the author gives information on the cases dealt with by these courts, the procedures for the appointment of the qadis (judges) and naibs (deputy judges), the terminology of judicial records, documents issued by the courts, and a number of other subjects of interest for the law historian. The second chapter is devoted to Muslim minority courts with coverage of such themes as the structure of the Sharia courts; the First Instance Court, the Court of Appeals, the High Sharia Court, relations between the Sharia courts and secular courts, administrative authorities, officials, lawyers, the extent of the power of these courts, among others. The third chapter, which is the main part of the study, examines individual registers. A total of 191 registers preserved in the library were scrutinized and documents related to each case were scanned. The Foreword of Prof. Çi¿dem explains in detail the salient features of each chapter and specifies that the third chapter focuses mainly on the Sharia courts of the independence period in Bulgaria, specifically between 1878-1945. The extensive bibliography and the index of personal names will be useful for researchers concerned.

Scarce. <br/><br/>Londoner Esther De Berdt married an American lawyer and re-located to Philadelphia in 1770. As part of the Philadelphia gentry she met many of the important Colonists including Gen. George Washington. Initially opposed she warmed to the cause of independence. Her husband Joseph became Washington's aide and secretary and eventually a general and still later Governor of Pennsylvania. Esther meanwhile headed the Ladies of Philadelphia and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Continental Army. She dies at age 34 in 1780 failing to see the success that crowned her efforts. Much of this text is in the form of letters. She was one of the outstanding women of the American Revolution.
