Contains: 66-page store ledger with surname index 1856-57; 71-page "Accounts of the Firm of Shank & Weltmer" 1857-58; 52-page "Diary by C. H. Shank" Jan. 1868-April 1870. Christian Henry Shank 1834-1895 son of Henry and Magdalena Shank was born in North Annville Township Lebanon Co. Pa. He worked in stores in Annville and Union Deposit; farmed the Shank homestead in North Annville; engaged in timber land speculations in North Carolina; went into the shoe business with John Kelchner; and was the bookkeeper of the Lebanon Stove Works. He married first Leah Landis 1842-1868 with whom he had Alice 1859-1938 Clara 1860-1881 and Ida 1868-1868; and second Barbara Funck 1840-1924 with whom he had Florence 1879-1956 and Henry 1881-1949. In the period covered by the diary he was working the farm and then moved into Lebanon and started working in a store. His non-work activites included: travelling to Virginia for a week; attending camp meetings the state fair political meetings a convention in Lebanon "the Drummer Boy of Shiloh" possibly the play by Samuel Muscraft church conferences and lectures and an organ dedication; serving as a juror; joining a hay fork company; and taking goods to the poor house. His wife Leah Landis Shank "gave birth to a Female child" in Feb. 1868; on Sept. 2 he notes: "Been to the Doctor several times about my wife she died at Quarter past one oclock." Several days after the funeral he rented out the farm and mill. The baby Ida who had been staying with his mother in Lebanon died a month later. In Feb. 1869 he sold his personal property at the farm moved to a house he had purchased in Lebanon and started working in John Rauch's store. He continued to be involved in various other money-making ventures including raising and selling Italian bees; making medicine "under the name of Shank Heiss & Co"; and investing in a hay rake company and in land in the Bay River area of North Carolina which he visited in Jan. 1870. In Nov. 1869 he "Left for Detroit Michigan this morning to have Perry arrested and brought in to Lebanon if Possible but he made his escape to Canada" probably someone who owed him money. In Jan. 1870 he notes that he "spent a few hours after church with Miss Funck" which continues regularly until the beginning of April when he prepared to return to North Carolina. In Good Condition: loss of leather from spine; back board is detached but present; old dampstaining at upper edges of ledgers and into upper half of pages in the diary which is still legible. hardcover

Scuffed and edgeworn with chip at lead of spine and with occasional text pages edgeworn; internally very good. New endpapers. Tight and decent copy of this major revision of the ordinances of this early and influential northwest Illinois city adopted hometown of U.S. Grant and briefly the lead mining capital of the world "Galena" being Latin for "lead" that was supposed to be the great hub of the Midwest until Chicago's natural topographic advantage eclipsed it. Part I "General Ordinances" spells out the nuts and bolts of this city government in great detail including designating on page 76 the appearance of the official city seal "a representation of a steamboat in the interior circle with the words 'Seal of the City of Galena Ills.' in the exterior circle" and an actual impression of that blind-embossed circular seal on the page following. This section concludes on page 101 with a "Certificate" noting the acceptance of these revised ordinances by the city council; city clerk John B. French then signs boldly in ink completing the partially-printed date of 1897 by adding June 29 and impressing the circular blind-embossed city seal once again. Gray cloth lettered/decorated in brown blue and red. 1st ed.: Nov. 1900. 105 pp. illus. with supplementary data slip mounted on rear blank p. 105. Cover cloth modestly foxed with tanning to spine panel. Both boards slightly bowed. Corners rubbed with slight exposure a bit more pronounced to bottom rear corner. Upper front flyleaf shows period inked signature of Nat Schmulowitz a San Francisco attorney civic leader humanitarian and bibliophile who graduated from Berkeley in 1910 beneath his signature is penned "U.C. 1910". Schmulowitz is perhaps best remembered as one of a team of lawyers who successfully defended Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle on charges of manslaughter in three separate trials in 1921-22; his humor collection established in 1947 and encompassing more than 23000 volumes resides at the San Francisco Public Library. This volume was issued in Nov. 1900 apparently just days prior to the infamous "Glasshouse disaster" that occurred at the 10th annual game on 29 Nov. of that year the greatest loss of spectator life in the history of American sports. Small bump to upper right corner of front board previous owner's ink stamp on front pastedown else a fine copy in the scarce original dust jacket which has some chips tears and scratches but remains reasonably presentable. Inscribed on the title page: "Compliments of Charles R. Shepherd." According to William F. Wu in The Yellow Peril Chinese Americans in American Fiction 2022 "Charles R. Shepherd wrote Lim Yik Choy from his experience as the superintendent of the Chung Mei Home for orphaned Chinese American boys in El Cerrito California a position that he held for twenty-five years. This novel is a biography of the boy for whom it is named commonly referred to as Ah Choy who spends crucial years of his orphaned childhood in Morrison House which represents the Chung Mei Home. The fictional superitendent George Douglas represents Shepherd himself. Ah Choy immigrates from China with an adopted uncle who dies in the United States. Ultimately he overcomes his handicaps as an orphan and a young Chinese immigrant and graduates from college. Shepherd presents a straightforward account of the reacision Ah Choy faces as well as his efforts to deal with it. Fleming H. Revell Company hardcover
